AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A WONDERFUL HISTORIATED INITIAL FROM AN OUTSTANDING MONUMENTAL BIBLE IN LATIN
TEXT FROM THE BEGINNING OF ROMANS
Southern France perhaps Bordeaux ca. 1300. Visible portion of leaf under mat: 305 x 206 mm. 12 x 8 1/8"; Frame: 520 x 414 mm. 20 1/2 x 16 1/4". Double column 40 lines of text in an extraordinarily fine gothic book hand. Matted and framed. Rubrics in red capitals struck with red headlines and chapter number in red and blue one two-line initial in blue and one three-line initial in red with intricate contrasting penwork extending the full length of the leaf along each column WITH A MAGNIFICENT HISTORIATED "P" DEPICTING ST. PAUL HOLDING A SWORD AND BOOK the saint with gilt halo standing before a beautiful blue background patterned with interlacing octagon shapes two gold bezants and two columns on either side of the figure this initial on a ground of pale pink with white tracery with extenders running the length of the column accentuated with trefoils and bezants on blue ground with spikey shape. A few faint dots between columns probably offset from facing page otherwise REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED ESPECIALLY BRIGHT CLEAN AND FRESH WITH THE INITIAL IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This leaf comes from one of the most beautiful Bibles ever illuminated and not surprisingly also comes with distinguished provenance. The level of preservation here is extraordinarily fine and the artistic accomplishment is difficult to overpraise. The painter who has obviously done his work with great care and confidence has produced an initial characterized by a sharply defined central figure impressive precision and an intelligent design all of which add up to an unusually high level of aesthetic achievement. The text here is the most important of St. Paul's writings his Epistle to the Romans in which the Apostle argues for salvation through faith in Christ. The opening initial is appropriately large standing proudly on the page inhabited by the nearly full-length figure of St. Paul whose bright orange robes propel him off the azure background. He is depicted with his traditional trappings a sword and book which he clutches closely to his chest while raising his head toward the heavens. Our leaf was once part of a spectacular Bible in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps his MS 2506 and later owned by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty his MS W. 173. The Bordeaux origin is suggested by the presence in the original volume of two 16th century inscriptions by monks from that city. Phillipps' heirs sold the Bible privately to Beatty in 1921 and it was auctioned in his sale at Sotheby's on 24 June 1969 to Alan Thomas then bought by Duschnes of New York and broken up. The heir to a large estate Phillipps 1792-1872 made collecting the chief business of his life eventually becoming simply the greatest collector of manuscripts in history. The American later British and then Irish engineer Beatty 1875-1968 started at the bottom and by the time he was 35 had made a fortune in copper mining. He began a serious career in collecting manuscripts at first Islamic and then Western accumulating in the end enough material to fill a catalogue of some 38 volumes. According to George Edwards' article in "Grolier 2000" Beatty "had the highest standards of quality and condition" as a collector a claim that is clearly validated by the present leaf. unknown

BIBLE NATURAL HISTORY OF. SCHEUCHZER JOHANN JAKOB
GEESTELYKE NATUURKUNDE
Amsterdam: Petrus Shenk 1735-38. First Edition in Dutch. 415 x 264 mm. 16 3/8 x 10 3/8". Entirely complete with continuous pagination but with a jump in page numbering from the end of book XIII to the beginning of XIV as usual. 15 parts in eight volumes. Translated by Florentius H. J. van Halen. First Edition in Dutch. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY VELLUM covers with large gilt entrelac centerpiece framed with gilt floral rule with bouquet-like cornerpieces gilt floral border raised bands compartments richly gilt titles and volume numbers handwritten in ink on spines all edges gilt. With head- and tail-pieces 15 engraved titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes and complete with frontispiece two engraved portraits of the author and the engraver the latter with shorter margins probably tipped-in and 760 OFTEN STRIKING COPPER ENGRAVINGS on 758 plates one with partial hand coloring a few double-page. Front pastedown of first volume with handwritten note in French on lined paper; with additional black & white title to first work erroneously dated 1728. Nissen ZBI 3661; see also: Faber du Faur "German Baroque Literature" p. 472. Trivial soiling to the vellum the seventh volume with a faint marginal dampstain affecting a few quires but not touching engravings the odd negligible blemish but AN OUTSTANDING SET the very attractive original bindings showing only insignificant wear and THE CONTENTS ESPECIALLY FRESH AND CLEAN THROUGHOUT WITH VERY FINE IMPRESSIONS OF THE PLATES. This is the first Dutch translation of Scheuchzer's "Sacred Nature" one of the most splendid German illustrated books of the 18th century presenting what surely is the most impressive combination of Biblical exegesis and scientific illustration to be found in any printed book. First published in 1731-35 as the "Physica Sacra" in Latin and as the "Kupfer-Bibel" in German so-named for the amazing array of copperplate engravings this work is arranged according to the progression of books in the Bible citing passages from those chapters where phenomena from the natural world are mentioned. The typical pattern here includes a textual citation followed by the author's often lengthy remarks on the passage and in many cases a dramatic engraving to illustrate what is said. The plates here are identical to the earlier editions retaining the inscriptions in Latin and German and are the work of Johann-Melchior Fuseli of the well-known Zurich family of 18th and 19th century artists. The engraved scenes are always executed with great skill are generally very animated and are often fascinating. Of the 760 images meant to illustrate the text many are strictly or primarily depictions of biblical scenes; several are simply illustrations of specimens of nature; and a large number perhaps half offer a kind of combination. An example of this last type includes a wonderful scene showing the birth of Man as related in Genesis 1:26-27 depicting not only a startled Adam in his fecund paradise but also 10 images of fetuses placentas and the skeletons of children attached like mounted specimens to the architectural frame of the illustration. According to Faber du Faur it is in this work that "the Baroque attains philosophically as well as artistically its high point and its conclusion. It is the last of those elegant works which do not really contain illustrations to a text but which are in effect composed of splendid plates with a text to accompany them." Scheuchzer 1672-1733 was a prolific naturalist who promoted at every opportunity the most modern scientific ideas though without wanting to risk the accusation of being irreverent. He says that the present work represents an attempt at finding a harmony between reason and revelation though it can also be seen as an effort to promulgate progressive theories under the venerable cloak of biblical commentary. The bibliographies disagree about the number of plates that ought to be present in this work and in other editions but ours corresponds to copies previously sold at auction as complete. Copies of the "Physica Sacra" and its translations show up regularly for sale but almost never does one see the work both complete and as here with a clean and fresh text in remarkably well-preserved and attractive contemporary bindings. COLOR PRINTING. BIBLE IN ENGLISH. BISSELL EDWIN CONE
GENESIS PRINTED IN COLORS. SHOWING THE ORIGINAL SOURCES FROM WHICH IT IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN COMPILED
Hartford Conn: Belknap & Warfield 1892. FIRST EDITION. 248 x 168 mm. 9 3/4 x 6 1/2". xv 1 59 pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's brown cloth covers with blind-stamped borders gilt titling smooth spine. Text printed in black blue green orange yellow brown and red. Extremities lightly rubbed two small stains to lower cover a touch of browning to edges of leaves isolated faint foxing but a fine copy clean and fresh internally with colors undimmed by time in a well-preserved binding. This curious volume represents an effort by Congregational minister and biblical scholar Edwin Bissell 1832-94 to make the multiple sources of the Book of Genesis clear to readers at a glance. In the introduction he explains the various documents from which the text was compiled and assigns them colors. For example the two sources that used the name "Jehovah" for God are in black and orange while the one that used the name "Elohim" is in red. Chapter 14 of Genesis which appears in only one source is in yellow editorial additions are in green and materials from the laws of Moses known as the Priests' Code are in blue. The text of the volume is limited to Genesis due to cost considerations; color printing was not a cheap undertaking at this time. Belknap & Warfield unknown

BIBLE POLYGLOT. BIBLIA SACRA POLYGLOTTA BAGSTERIANA
BIBLIA SACRA POLYGLOTTA TEXTUS ARCHETYPOS VERSIONESQUE AB ECCLESIA ANTIQUITUS RECEPTAS NECON VERSIONES RECENTIORES ANGLICANAM GERMANICAM ITALICAM GALLICAM ET HISPANICAM COMPLECTENTIA
Londini London: sumptibus Samuelis Bagster 1831. 405 x 265 mm. 15 7/8 x 10 3/8". 3 p.l. 52 pp.; 566 189 18 leaves; 1 p.l. 143 1 pp.With prologue by Samuel Lee. Publisher's excellent dark blue pebble-grain morocco gilt covers with ornate frame raised bands spine gilt in compartments with intricate gilt design gilt titling turn-ins with multiple gilt rules all edges gilt older repairs to front joint tails of spine and corners. Front pastedown with large morocco presentation label to Rev. Robert Mosley Master of Burnley from the "teachers and scholars" of the Sunday School dated Christmas Day 1840. Darlowe & Moule 1456. Extremities a little rubbed but the restored binding solid and the gilt still shining isolated mild spots or smudges to margins but A FINE COPY internally clean fresh and rather bright. Offering the Old and New Testaments in Hebrew Greek Latin English German French Italian and Spanish plus the Pentateuch in Samarian and the Syriac New Testament this is the "most inclusive" and extensive polyglot Bible since Walton's London Polyglot of 1655-57 according to Darlowe & Moule. Samuel Bagster 1772-1851 was an innovator in the production of portable and affordable scholarly Bibles. When Bagster set up his business in 1794 only the Oxford and Cambridge University presses and the King's printer were permitted to publish copies of Holy Scriptures unless the texts were accompanied by commentary or annotations. Consequently Bagster was compelled to add scholarly apparatus to the Bibles for which he saw a commercial need. Here the Authorized Version of the Church of England is supplemented by a scholarly prologue in Latin from the gifted linguist and clergyman Samuel Lee 1738-1852 fluent in 18 languages; translations of the Scriptures by Everard van der Hooght and William Greenfield Hebrew Cardinal Carafa Greek the Vulgate Latin Martin Luther German J. F. Ostervald French Giovanni Diodati Italian and Father Scio Spanish; and variant readings of sections of Scripture by Grabe and Griesbach. The work is arranged with small-octavo-sized texts of the Scripture in the eight languages arranged on facing pages four to a page. Darlowe & Moule notes that the clever Bagster maximized his investment by using the same types to print distinct editions of the seven polyglot versions or to combine two of the languages in a diglot edition. Our stately volume was a Christmas gift to a beloved curate of Saint Peter's Church in Burnley Lancashire: Robert Mosley Master 1794-1867 who later rose to the office of Archdeacon of Manchester was known as the "Clogging Parson" for establishing a fund to buy shoes clogs for poor children. As the Burnley Express noted in 2010 "during the 30 years he was to reside in Burnley there was no more popular man in town. sumptibus Samuelis Bagster unknown

Frank Weitenkampf quoted by Hills notes: "The engravings after Chapman carefully reproduced the prim line-work of the drawings. . . . This Harper publication was a remarkable production for its time and place and retains its importance in the annals of American book-making. W. J. Linton noted wood-engraver and author knew 'no other book like this so good so perfect in all it undertakes.'" With six full-page illustrations and a folding facsimile of a letter written by George Washington. WITH AN ORIGINAL LEAF FROM THE FIRST AMERICAN BIBLE TO BE PRINTED IN ENGLISH text from the last chapter of Isaiah and the first chapter of Jeremiah. Heller & Magee 131. In near-mint condition. Chosen as one of the Fifty Books of the Year for 1930 this handsomely produced leaf book contains a specimen from Robert Aitken's 1782 Bible the first to be printed in English in the new United States. The Revolutionary War had stopped the importation of Bibles from England and by 1780 the shortages of this much-in-demand book were acute. The Scottish emigr printer Robert Aitken took up the challenge producing first a New Testment and then a complete version of the Scriptures with the approval of Congress. It was an entirely American production printed on paper made in Pennsylvania. In addition to the essay by Dearden and Watson on the history of this significant publication our leaf book includes an essay from Edwin Grabhorn on the typography of the period. Complete copies of the Aitken Bible are now rare commanding hammer prices in the high five figures at auction. This excellent work from the renowned Grabhorn Press offers an affordable opportunity to own an important part of American history. Grabhorn Press unknown

BIBLIA DAS IST: DIE GANTZE HEILIGE SCHRIFFT. DEUDSCH. D. MARTIN LUTHER. THE GERMAN BIBLE IN LUTHER'S TRANSLATION
Munich: Bremer Presse 1926-28. No. 284 OF 365 COPIES. 360 x 250 mm. 14 1/4 x 10". Five volumes. Edited by Carl von Kraus. No. 284 OF 365 COPIES. PUBLISHER'S REFINED BURGUNDY MOROCCO DECORATED IN BLIND covers framed by nine blind rules central panel of upper cover with large cross formed by 13 blind fillets triple raised bands brown morocco label blind-ruled turn-ins ivory watered silk endleaves top edges gilt other edges untrimmed. In apparently later morocco-lipped slipcases. With titles and initials drawn by Anna Simons. Eyssen 88; Ransom p. 257. IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This is a superb copy of the signal achievement of the Bremer Press in a restrained but impressive binding produced by their bindery. Printed on Zander handmade paper with a typeface specially cut by Louis Hoell and initials designed by Anna Simons it was issued to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the completion of the Lutheran Bible. Rodenberg tells us that this work had for years been the highest goal of the press and Eyssen proclaims "a better and more textually reliable re-creation of this national monument is hardly conceivable." Colin Franklin noted in "The Private Presses" that the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz described the Bremer Press as "the Queen of the Private Presses." According to Ransom the press offered the Bible in three different bindings: in boards for $310 in vellum for $420 and in morocco for $470. Because she was a woman Anna Simons 1871-1951 was barred from studying at the Prussian Arts and Crafts School so she travelled to England to learn from Edward Johnston at the Royal College of Art. Johnston's biographer Priscilla Johnston writes "She was one of the best students Johnston ever had and certainly one of those who exercised the greatest influence afterwards for she disseminated his teaching throughout Germany where it was perhaps more fruitful even than in England." She designed some 1400 initials and title pages for the Bremer Press. While our stately bindings are unsigned they were likely designed by Frieda Thiersch who was running the Bremer Press bindery at the time. The design evokes strength the materials are of the highest quality and the level of execution is irreproachable. Our set shows absolutely no signs of wear and looks much as it did the day it was issued. Bremer Presse unknown

BIBLIA AD VETUSTISSIMA EXEMPLARIA NUNC RECENS CASTIGATA
Venetiis Venice: Hieronymus Polus 1587. 213 x 146 mm. 8 3/8 x 5 5/8". 12 p.l. 1126 pp. ESPECIALLY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY CALF covers with gilt French fillet frame and oval wreath of olive branches the center of the wreath in the shape of a cross flat spine ruled in gilt red morocco label. Title page with elaborate wood-engraved frame text profusely illustrated WITH 600 WOOD ENGRAVINGS depicting scenes from scripture after Holbein Bernard Salomon le Petit Bernard and others a handful of these a bit indistinct. Front pastedown with ex-libris of Leonis S. Olschki. Adams B-1093; STC Italian 93. Not in Darlow & Moule. A little wear to joints and extremities spine a bit crackled separation at hinges but no looseness occasional minor browning or foxing otherwise in remarkably fine condition the text clean and crisp and in a still-lustrous entirely solid unsophisticated original binding. This is a very well-preserved handsomely bound and lavishly illustrated edition with distinguished provenance of the Louvain Bible first printed in Venice in 1578. Our edition contains 600 wood engravings illustrating the text ranging from portraits of prophets saints and evangelists to dramatic scenes from the histories of the Old Testament and the life of Christ and ending with an imaginative Apocalypse cycle. Many of these are the work of Lyonnaise artist Bernard Salomon 1506-61 known by the sobriquet "Le Petit Bernard" for his small engravings rich with detail. Others are based on the biblical woodcuts of Hans Holbein. The binding here is likely French; the flat spine with just one large gilt-framed panel and the olive branch decoration on the covers is characteristic of late 16th century and early 17th century French work. The exceptional condition here is typical of books from the collection of Leo Samuel Olschki 1861-1940 scion of a family of Prussian Jewish printers whose interest in printing history led to his becoming a celebrated antiquarian bookseller author founder of the journal "The Bibliophile" and publisher of works in the humanities. BINDINGS GEORG FRIEDRICH KRAUSS. BIBLE IN ENGLISH
THE MACKLIN BIBLE
London: T. Bensley for T. Macklin final volume Bensley for T. Cadell & W. Davies 1800 for the six volumes of the Bible 1816 for the Apocrypha. First Printing of this Edition. 480 x 385 mm. 19 x 15 1/8". One leaf in the Apocrypha 3P2 comprising two prologues of Ecclesiasticus invisibly inserted from another copy. Seven volumes comprising the regular Bible in six volumes and the Apocrypha usually not included as a seventh volume. First Printing of this Edition. ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT CONTEMPORARY RED NEOCLASSICAL-STYLE STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO SUMPTUOUSLY GILT AND ONLAID WITH BLUE BY GEORG FRIEDRICH KRAUSS done for Duke ALbert of Saxe-Teschen with repeated "AST" monogram covers with very elaborate frames incorporating 11 plain and decorative gilt rules four onlaid borders of blue morocco and very elegant swirling foliate ornamentation around the central scalloped panel six pairs of raised bands each pair flanking a recessed gilt and blue metope and pentaglyph rule very handsome spine compartments with blue fan-shaped cornerpieces and central gilt-decorated blue medallions within sunburst gilt collars turn-ins with Greek key pattern in gilt striking endleaves of turquoise and green watered silk the Apochrypha endleaves slightly different. With more than 100 allegorical headpieces and tailpieces and some 70 SPLENDID LARGE-FOLIO-SIZE COPPER PLATES after Fuseli Reynolds West and others most plates printed before letters. Tissue guards perhaps later. Herbert 1442 and 1651. First volume with about 30 leaves noticeably foxed the majority of plates offset onto previous and following pages consistent inoffensive offsetting of text on facing pages other trivial imperfections but still a very impressive copy internally with the luxurious paper used for the text both fresh and clean and the engravings richly impressed and with very little foxing. Some unimportant scuffing and rubbing to the leather but all defects minor THE MAGNIFICENT BINDINGS REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED the heavy volumes completely solid with only insignificant signs of use and THE MOROCCO AND LAVISHLY GILT DECORATION EXTREMELY BRIGHT. AN ALTOGETHER MEMORABLE COPY. The most prodigious form of Scripture in English ever published the Macklin Bible was often put into ornate bindings especially by London binders like Staggemeier and his contemporaries. But however much other sets may glisten the present magnificent example surely stands at or near the front of the line as one of the most lavishly decorated and arresting copies in existence. Its decorative extravagance also testifies to the fact that Macklin's publication was sufficiently admired outside of England to warrant the finest workmanship and the expenditure of great sums of money on artistic resources. The very large and bold type the fine Whatman paper and the series of engravings by some of the most celebrated artists of the period make this an item that is already very desirable. Like the Boydell "Shakespeare Gallery" also printed by Bensley our Macklin Bible is a vast picture book with illustrations that are grand both in size and emotional impact. But it is of course the bindings here that matter the most. Francesco Piranesi is generally given credit for inventing the Neoclassical style when he designed volumes presented to Gustavus III of Sweden during this monarch's visit to Rome in 1783-84. Quickly popular the Neoclassical style was imitated and developed by Staggemeier & Welcher in London by F. W. Standlander in Stockholm and by Georg Friedrich Krauss in Vienna. Krauss was the most prominent Continental binder working in this style of the day and Saxe-Teschen was perhaps his most important client. Products of the Krauss bindery have passed through some of the most distinguished collections over the years particularly those of Frstenberg and Schfer; and his bindings have consistently brought remarkable sums of money at auction. It is sufficient to say that the present group of bindings represents the most impressive collection of decorative volumes we have ever offered for sale. The collector for whom these bindings were originally executed Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen 1738-1822 was the son of Friedrich August II of Saxony and the son-in-law of the empress Maria Theresa. After providing important military and civil service to the Habsburg empire he retired to Vienna in 1795 and afterward devoted himself to the fine arts. He founded the Albertina which now houses the greatest collection of prints in the world and he put together a great library distinguished by the highest taste and most exacting standards. The present copy has the additional distinction of containing what amounts to an extra volume: the Macklin Bible however it is bound most often appears in the marketplace without the Apocrypha appearing here as Volume VII which was not issued until 16 years after the others. It is also of some interest that the bindings of our seven volumes were decorated in an entirely uniform fashion as a close inspection shows something not typical of a set with volumes published so many years apart. The non-uniform endleaves in the final volume here may have resulted from the fact that given the physical size of the books the binder simply ran out of the cloth he had used for lining the first six volumes. T. Bensley for T. Macklin [final volume Bensley for T. Cadell & W. Davies] unknown

A FRAGMENT FROM A GIANT VELLUM BIBLE IN LATIN WITH AN IMPRESSIVE DECORATED INITIAL
TEXT FROM THE FIRST EPISTLE OF SAINT PETER
Germany ca. 1150. With edges unfolded: 224 x 185 mm. 8 3/4 x 7 3/8". 27 lines in a clear proto-gothic hand. Matted and framed. Rubrics in red one three-line initial in red with blue decoration the verso with two similar two-line initials MOST OF AN IMPRESSIVE "P" with vine-stem work painted red and green on a blue ground and with the face of a beast prominently displayed on the descender. Recovered from a binding and thus the vellum a little darkened the paint in the initial just slightly faded the word "Bassus" boldly penned by a later hand above the first line of the main text touching two lines though not obscuring the meaning; even with these imperfections an excellent specimen overall the initial still very dramatic and with no major damage and except for one line at the top the text entirely legible. With a zoomorphic initial that is both dramatic and charming this is an attractively decorated fragment from a so-called "Atlantic Bible" named for its immense size like an Atlas with both the ocean and the cartographical book deriving their names from Atlas the Titan. These vast Bibles were very costly and time consuming to produce making them among the most prized possessions of the church or monastery in which they resided. According to Christopher de Hamel "Twelfth-century giant Bibles are not just particularly grand books or the most beautiful Bibles of their time but are among the most ambitious artistic enterprises surviving from the twelfth century in any medium." "The Book: A History of the Bible" p. 80 Because of their size these volumes were often targets for reuse as binding scrap. This fragment is one such case but it happily retains most of the "P" as well as the opening lines of text from this section which begins the First Epistle of St. Peter "Petrus apostolus Iesu Christi electis". unknown

The text here includes the three Epistles of Saint John in addition to the Apocalypse translated by Le Maistre de Sacy 1613-84 a member of the Jansenists a French Roman Catholic sect strongly opposed to the teachings of the Jesuits. A major theologian de Sacy spent two years in the Bastille for his heterodoxy. The binding's fanfare style of decoration was popular in France during de Sacy's lifetime. The main features of this style in Glaister's words "are interlacing ribbons" that form "compartments of various shapes with emphasis given to a central compartment. This interlacing ribbon is bounded by a double line on one side and a single one on the other." Ornaments made with small hand tools "fill all the compartments except the central one and almost completely cover the sides." The fanfare style is perhaps most frequently associated with the work of Nicolas and Clovis Eve court binders and booksellers to successive kings of France from about 1578 to 1634. It is generally believed that the term "fanfare" actually took its name from an early 17th century music book the title of which begins with the word "fanfare" acquired by the bibliophile Charles Nodier in 1829. The book was bound for Nodier by the famous Parisian binder Joseph Thouvenin using an appropriately retrospective design in imitation of the Eves' style which from that point forward came to be known as "fanfare." This retrospective binding was executed by one of the greatest French bookbinding families. In her "Bookbinders and their Craft" Sarah Prideaux says that the Gruel firm founded in 1811 "always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative in artistic matters as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements." Paul Gruel 1864-1954 took over the firm after the death of his father the great Lon Gruel in 1923 and ably directed the operation until his own death maintaining the atelier's reputation for excellence. Over the years the firm employed some of the most skillful artisans in the trade including Prideaux herself. The moving illustrations are the work of Jean Bernard 1908-94 a prolific book illustrator and a leader in the French artisans' association Les Compagnons du Devoir. The etchings show to especially fine effect on vellum. [Printed by Robert Blanchet for Paul Fraud] unknown

BINDINGS PEASANT. BIBLE IN GERMAN
DAS GANZE NEUE TESTAMENT. DER PSALTER DAVIDS. DIE CL PSALMEN DAVID
Zurich: David Gessner 1768. 169 x 94 mm. 6 1/2 x 3 3/4". 272 64 214 of 215 pp. CONTEMPORARY PAINTED AND BLIND-TOOLED VELLUM DECORATED IN AN ELABORATE AND QUAINT STYLE covers with black and red starburst at center in a lobed red and green frame stamped with stars and tulips yellow cornerpieces stamped with a floral design smooth spine painted red and tooled in blind with flowers Dutch gilded endpapers all edges gilt. Covers faintly soiled extremities lightly rubbed one leaf with two-inch portion torn away at fore margin costing small parts of five closely spaced staves of music occasional foxing of no great consequence; with some serious condition issues internally but an extremely pleasing example of a binding representing German folk art of the period. Although lacking the final leaf of text this volume is of considerable interest as an expertly made and decorated so-called "Peasant Binding" a colorful binding style that began in Hungary and spread through Germany the Netherlands and Scandinavia in the 18th century. The use of the word "peasant" in this context is a reference to the obvious influence of folk art on this decoration rather than to the clientele for which it was intended. Bibles prayer books and hymnals in the brightly painted and exuberantly decorated vellum bindings were popular wedding gifts among the bourgeoisie who were both literate and sufficiently affluent to afford such luxuries. BIBLE IN ENGLISH. THE MACKLIN BIBLE
THE HOLY BIBLE. THE OLD TESTAMENT EMBELLISHED WITH ENGRAVINGS FROM PICTURES AND DESIGNS BY THE MOST EMINENT ENGLISH ARTISTS with: THE NEW TESTAMENT. and: THE APOCRYPHA
London: T. Bensley for T. Macklin final volume Bensley for T. Cadell & W. Davies 1800 for the six volumes of the Bible 1816 for the Apocrypha. First Printing of this Edition. 484 x 390 mm. 19 x 15 1/4". Seven volumes comprising the regular Bible in six volumes and the Apocrypha very often not included as a seventh volume. First Printing of this Edition. Once splendid contemporary black straight-grain morocco gilt covers framed by Greek key roll palmette roll and multiple gilt rules double raised bands spine compartments densely gilt with rows of alternating star and circlet tools gilt titling turn-ins with gilt chain roll purple endpapers all edges gilt some inexpert but not obvious repairs to joints and backstrips. With more than 100 allegorical headpieces and tailpieces and some 70 SPLENDID LARGE-FOLIO SIZE COPPER PLATES after Fuseli Reynolds West and others. Herbert 1442 and 1651. Extremities rather rubbed boards a bit scuffed but the decorative contemporaneous bindings solid and not without appeal. Plates somewhat foxed mostly to margins mild to moderate offsetting from plates occasional mild offsetting in the text bed but still a fresh wide-margined copy. The most prodigious form of scripture in English ever published the Macklin Bible features very large and bold type fine Whatman paper and a series of engravings by some of the most celebrated artists of the period. Like the Boydell "Shakespeare Gallery" also printed by Bensley our Macklin Bible is a vast picture book with illustrations that are grand both in size and emotional impact. According to DNB Macklin 1752/3-1800 announced his intention to produce a lavishly illustrated luxuriously produced folio Bible in 1789 and he spent the next 11 years and 30000 making his dream a reality. His efforts paid off: "the subscription list for 703 copies at 46 1s. apiece was headed by the king the queen and the prince of Wales." Sadly Macklin died just five days after the last engraving was finished and did not live to see his masterpiece become one of the most acclaimed English Bibles. As DNB observes "The Macklin Bible endures as the most ambitious edition produced in Britain often pirated but never rivalled." The present copy has the additional distinction of containing what amounts to an extra volume: the Macklin Bible most often appears in the marketplace without the Apocrypha appearing here as volume VII which was not issued until 16 years after the others. Copies of the Macklin Bible were often put into ornate bindings as was the present set; despite the depradations of time the workmanship of a superior London binder remains apparent. T. BINDINGS BOZERIAN. BIBLE IN LATIN
BIBLIORUM SACRORUM VULGATAE VERSIONIS EDITIO
Paris: Excudebat Fr. Amb. Didot 1785. 318 x 235 mm. 12 1/2 x 9 1/4". Two volumes. SUPERB CRIMSON STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO BY BOZERIAN covers with distinctive wide frame incorporating arches Grecian urns and floral garlands Culot roll #49 sunburst cornerpieces Culot stamp #15 the outer and inner edges of the frame flanked by thick and thin gilt rules and cresting Culot roll #12 and floral Culot roll #29 rolls; double raised bands separated by a gilt-tooled inlaid strip of black morocco spines densely gilt in "mille toiles et points" compartments filled with much foliage and many flowers against a stippled background Culot plate IX turn-ins with interlacing flame roll Culot roll #16 light green glazed endpapers all edges gilt. Front pastedowns with wood-engraved bookplate of Ellic Howe and with faint evidence of earlier bookplate removal; verso of rear flyleaf with small engraved heraldic book label. Bibelsammlung der Wrttembergischen Landesbibliothek I D1639. Cf. Darlow & Moule 6263. For the binding: Culot "Jean-Claude Bozerian." Half a dozen or so faint scratches or small spots to boards a little vague crinkling to spine occasional mild browning or small marginal spots a couple of gatherings in second volume with faint overall browning otherwise an excellent copy internally clean and smooth with generous margins and THE ELEGANT BINDINGS IN FINE CONDITION especially lustrous and with only insignificant wear. Although unsigned these handsome volumes are certainly Bozerian work; they not only typify the refined bindings executed by both the elder Bozerian and Bozerian le jeune during the last decade of the 18th and first two decades of the 19th century but they also share tools identified by Paul Culot as belonging to Jean-Claude Bozerian. Particularly characteristic are the spine panels featuring intricate gilt elaboration spreading out from a center point in this case a five-petaled flower a design Culot calls "mille toiles et points" or 1000 stars and dots. The urn and garland roll used on the covers designated roll #49 by Culot is identical to that on a binding from the Charles Ramsden collection British Library shelfmark c156k1 signed by Bozerian and also appears on a signed red straight-grain morocco binding done for C. M. de Talleyrand-Prigord De Ricci Schiff Collection 170. The Schiff binding also uses the same flame roll tool for the turn-ins and like our volumes items 161-63 by Bozerian senior in the Schiff collection all show the same distinctive strip of dark morocco inlaid between raised bands and decorated with a chain-pattern roll-tool. Our edition of the Vulgate was printed by Franois-Ambroise Didot 1730-1804 son of the founder of the prestigious Didot printing house. Franois-Ambroise introduced several innovations in type design for example making the contrast between thick and thin letters more noticeable; he improved punch cutting and mold making; and he introduced the practice of distinguishing types by their point size 12-point type 36-point type etc. The present work was printed on the highly finished wove paper Didot introduced in 1780 a stock similar to that used by Baskerville. Former owner Ellic Howe 1910-91 was a professional printer who wrote a number of works on typography. In 1982 he revealed that he had been the director of Britain's forgery operations during World War II charged with preparing false documents for agents being sent behind enemy lines. Excudebat Fr. AN ILLUMINATED AND HISTORIATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM AN EARLY BIBLE IN LATIN
TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF II PARALIPOMENON
England Oxford ca. mid-13th century. 184 x 127 mm. 7 1/4 x 5". Double column 54 lines of text in a very fine gothic pearl script. Rubrics in red capitals struck with red headings and chapter numeral in red and blue verso with two two-line initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork tendrils extending three-quarters of the length of each column recto WITH AN APPEALING SIX-LINE HISTORIATED "C" DEPICTING KING SOLOMON WITH HIS SWORD the figure on a burnished gold background delicately embellished with white scrollwork the initial executed in pink and blue with white tracery. One tiny fore-edge tear fore margin of verso with one-inch square glue stain from older repair to very small hole the initial with minuscule loss of gilt just at the top of the king's head otherwise in fine condition the leaf clean fresh and bright the initial detailed and attractive and the margins very generous. This excerpt from what is called in the Protestant canon the Second Book of Chronicles tells of King Solomon's plans to build a temple using the finest materials obtainable. The wise king appears in our initial sitting before a wall painted in gold and patterned with scrolling vines a design feature common to many historiated initials but also perhaps not coincidentally indicative of his great wealth. In the first chapter of this book Solomon asks the Lord only for wisdom and so appropriately he is shown here holding the sword of justice the massive blade resting against his shoulder. His bearded face shown in three-quarter view wears a solemn thoughtful expression which the artist has skillfully suggested with a few sensitive lines. In addition to its attractive decoration our leaf has the bonus of noticeably ample margins an uncommon luxury in portable Bibles such as this one. unknown

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A WONDERFUL HISTORIATED INITIAL FROM AN OUTSTANDING MONUMENTAL BIBLE IN LATIN
TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF II MACCABEES
Southern France perhaps Bordeaux ca. 1300. 330 x 229 mm. 13 x 9". Double column 40 lines of text in an extraordinarily fine gothic book hand. Attractively matted. Rubrics in red capitals struck with red headlines and chapter number in red and blue one two-line initial in blue with elaborate red and blue penwork extending the full length of the leaf in the inner margin and the recto WITH A MAGNIFICENT HISTORIATED "F" SHOWING JUDAS MACCABEUS AND THREE OTHERS STANDING BEFORE GOD Judas at the front of the group gesturing with a finger of one hand pointing at the other hand see below the scene set against a magenta and white tessellated background the body of the initial in blue pink and white with burnished gold disks the historiated part of the initial measuring approximately 42 mm. square but with a wide descender several lines long the letter terminating near the top of the middle margin with a leafy stalk surmounted by a pensive scrawny bird. A tiny bit of wrinkling at one lower corner otherwise REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED ESPECIALLY BRIGHT CLEAN AND FRESH WITH THE INITIAL IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This and the next item are two of the most beautiful Bible leaves we have ever offered for sale and not surprisingly they come with distinguished provenance. The condition could not be any better and the artistic accomplishment here is difficult to overpraise. The painter who has obviously done his work with great care and confidence has produced a scene characterized by sharply defined figures impressive precision in the application of paint and an intelligent design all of which add up to an unusually high level of aesthetic achievement especially for the time period. The iconography here is intriguing. The opening chapter of II Machabees contains a letter from Judas Maccabeus and leaders of the Jewish community in Jerusalem inviting the Jews of Egypt to join in celebrating a festival of thanksgiving which became the holiday known today as Hanukkah commemorating the liberation of Jerusalem from Syrian control and the reconsecration of the Temple after its desecration by Antiochus IV. In French and Italian illuminated Bibles of the 13th century the conventional historiated initial for II Machabees depicts a messenger either receiving the letter in Jerusalem or delivering it in Egypt. Our miniature by contrast presents an unusual and perhaps original tableaux. Architectural elements at the right edge represent the newly rededicated Temple as an image of God looks out benevolently from beneath the soffit of the building's cornice in the direction of four figures at the left side apparently representing Judas Maccabeus and three of the others who jointly authored the letter with him. The arrangement of the hands of the Judas figure suggests a speaking gesture though whether addressing thanksgiving to God or related somehow to the contents of the letter is unclear. Our leaf was once part of a spectacular Bible in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps his MS 2506 and later owned by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty his MS W.173. Phillipps bought the manuscript in the 1820s from Thomas Thorpe who had purchased it in Spain. The Bordeaux origin is bolstered by the presence in the original volume of two 16th century inscriptions by monks from that city. Phillipps' heirs sold the Bible privately to Beatty in 1921 and it was sold in his sale at Sotheby's on 24 June 1969 to Alan Thomas then bought in turn by Duschnes of New York and broken up. Phillipps 1792-1872 began collecting books with his schoolboy allowance and once he succeeded to his father's large estate he made collecting the chief business of his life eventually becoming simply the greatest collector of manuscripts in history. His collection reached the staggering number of 60000 manuscripts and approximately 1000 incunabula as well as many other printed books old and new. By the time he was 35 the American later British and then Irish engineer Beatty 1875-1968 had made a fortune in copper mining. But the years in the mines where he started at the bottom caused serious harm to his lungs and he spent considerable time travelling to salubrious climates to repair his health. Cairo in particular became a second home and a location from which he began a serious career in collecting manuscripts at first Islamic and then Western accumulating in the end enough material to fill a catalogue of some 38 volumes. According to George Edwards' article in "Grolier 2000" Beatty "had the highest standards of quality and condition" as a collector a claim that is validated by the present leaf. unknown
