Seit 1910 tragen alle kanadischen Kriegsschiffe als Namensbestandteil (ship prefix) HMCS, was so viel bedeutet wie His (bzw. Her) Majesty's Canadian Ship. ‎ROYAL NAVY; VICTUALLING‎

‎Duplicate certificate attesting to the mismeasurement of stores aboard HMS Niger.‎

‎At sea: February 1816. A manuscript copy written at sea recording how the ship was supplied with 24 fewer yards of "duck" cotton fabric by the storekeeper in Portsmouth than was promised. It is signed by her captain Samuel Jackson as well as the ship's first lieutenant master and purser. Samuel Jackson 1775-1845 joined the Royal Navy in 1790 and served throughout the Mediterranean including at the Battle of Cape St Vincent and in Nelson's fleet at the Assault on Cádiz. In 1813 he was given command of HMS Lacedaemonian to join the North America Station. On 29 August 1815 he was appointed captain of HMS Niger a fifth-rate frigate. On 28 January 1816 they sailed to America from Portsmouth conveying the ambassador to the United States Charles Bagot. By the end of the year it was clear that HMS Niger was in unserviceable condition so remained in port and was broken up in 1820. Jackson retired with the rank of rear-admiral after a long and distinguished career. Cotton "duck" derived from the Dutch word for cloth doek was a canvas used throughout the 19th century and before for warm-weather clothing and sails. A full transcription is available upon request. Single sheet 328 x 202 mm sometime folded into four watermarked "T. Edmonds 1813" manuscript on both sides. Creased where folded a little toned and finger-soiled a few small nicks along edges: a very good example. hardcover‎

‎VICTORIAN ROYAL NAVY RECRUITMENT BROADSIDE SEEKING 'STOUT HEALTHY BOYS'‎

‎London: W. P. Griffith and Sons Ltd. 1888. Printed broadside 34.4 x 20.5cm. Minor contemporary manuscript correction to one of the printed height/chest measurements. There are three neat horizontal filing folds and a minor nick to each end of one of the folds otherwise condition is very good. An uncommon late nineteenth-century naval recruitment broadside boldly titled: "Wanted for the Royal Navy Stout Healthy Boys of Good Character from 15 to 16 1/2 Years of Age". The broadside begins by setting out the various requirements for new recruits such as height and chest measurements as well as the stipulation that they "must be able to read and write must have the written consent of their Parents or Guardians and must sign an engagement to serve for 12 years from the date of attaining the age of 18". It then moves on to outline scales of pay allowances pensions periods of leave and other arrangements for example "boys after 6 months' service can send money home to their parents or guardians at the following rates". At the foot is a list of ships including the names of their captains and ports currently seeking recruits as well as the locations of recruitment offices.

A rather fun piece of naval ephemera which would have surely appealed to many Victorian youths' sense of adventure. ‎Visit By Command of His Majesty the King of his Excellency the Prime Minister of Nepal to HMS "Dreadnought" Friday June 19th 1908.‎

‎London: 1908. Admiral Dunbar-Nasmith's copy with additional illustrations A specially produced copy likely issued to dignitaries from the library of Admiral Sir Martin Dunbar-Nasmith although unmarked as such. It contains an additional six postcard illustrations of HMS Dreadnought Bellerophon Superb Invincible and Indomitable. Dunbar-Nasmith captained a D-class submarine from 1911 to 1912 and served aboard HMS Indomitable in November 1908. The launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 represented a revolution in naval firepower. "In her day the Dreadnought was the cynosure of the early twentieth-century battleship. So epoch making was this one ship that all subsequent battleships are usually referred to as dreadnoughts the name becoming a generic term" Parkinson p. xi. As such the British government was keen to show her off to foreign visitors. In June 1908 the Prime Minister of Nepal Maharaja Sri Teen Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana 1863-1929 and his entourage were invited to watch the ship on exercise in the English Channel. To accompany this visit the admiralty distributed a small souvenir volume with descriptions and photographs of Dreadnought the Navy's D-class submarines and its torpedo boat destroyers. There are two known states of this work. The more common features a gilt-lettered front board title page captioned tissue guard for the photograph of Dreadnought and folding map. The present rarer state does not have these features but instead has six additional chromolithograph postcard illustrations at the rear. Dunbar-Nasmith 1883-1965 was a Royal Navy submarine captain throughout the First World War and awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Sea of Marmara in 1915. Octavo. Eight tipped-in gelatin silver prints on matte paper with captioned tissue guards and six colour postcard illustrations. Original blue calf by Eyre & Spottiswoode spine gilt in compartments flat bands elaborate gilt panels to boards front board stamped with royal arms in gilt rear board stamped with admiralty device in gilt gilt dentelles silk doublures and endpapers gilt edges binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso. Abrasions and silverfishing to front board edges and dentelles binding sprung pages a little crinkled some foxing internally: a very good copy.
