THIS COPY WAS PRESENTED BY DONALD RUSSELL OF THE LYGON ARMS AT BROADWAY, WORCESTERSHIRE, TO E B DAVIES, FIRST LIEUTENANT OF HMS BROADWAY - A DOUBLE 'BROADWAY' CONNECTION. It carries Davies's signature and Russell's inscribed business card on front paste-down. The Town-class destroyer HMS Broadway became famous as one of three escorts (the others being HMS Aubretia and HMS Bulldog) which captured U-110 intact in May 1941. The U-boat's capture led to the first seizure of a working Enigma machine and many vital cipher documents. The capture, subsequently code-named Operation PRIMROSE, was one of the greatest secrets of the Battle of Atlantic and was not revealed until ULTRA began to be declassified in the 1970s. Donald Russell was the owner-manager of the prestigious The Lygon Arms. The hotel was purchased, restored and made famous by his father, but during WWII Donald Russell turned it into a haven for servicemen on leave. It was doubtless while Davies was staying there that Russell caught sight of the 'Broadway' connection that resulted in the presentation. It is a remarkable added coincidence that HMS Broadway and HMS Newmarket should be sister ships. 'Destroyer from America' is a vividly-written and personal account of the war service of Town-class destroyer HMS Newmarket (here thinly disguised as 'HMS Porchester'). The simple device nevertheless allows the author to describe the war in the Atlantic with much less than the usual censorship. In addition to his work as a book illustrator, the artist John Worsley is best remembered as the creator of 'Albert RN', the dummy prisoner so lifelike that it enabled a series of successful escapes from the famous naval prison camp Marlag Milag Nord. The story is told in Lewis Gilbert's well-known feature film 'Albert RN' (1953) starring Jack Warner and Anthony Steel. Law 0231 (recording the first edition).

The publisher's note makes it clear that this work, although the first to appear in print, was conceived as the third volume of a projected three-volume series 'Survey on the Japanese Naval Vessels 1925-1947'. It seems unlikely, however, that any further volumes were published and that this volume therefore stands alone; CERTAINLY IT CONSTITUTES THE FINEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF ITS TYPE. Constructor Lieutenant-Commander Shizuo Fukui (1913-1993), Imperial Japanese Navy, was one of the world's foremost experts on ship design and naval construction. He was the author of some fourteen books and numerous magazine articles, which form collectively the definitive photographic record of the IJN. His wartime appointments ranged from the HQ of the Combined Fleet to the Navy Technical Institute; he ended his service career as Chief Officer and Director of Naval Construction at one of the major naval shipyards. After the war he devoted himself to historical research and made a lifelong contribution to the preservation of the records of ships of the Imperial Navy. His private library eventually contained over 20,000 photos, most of them unique, of which the great majority remains unpublished. Anthony Pavia was the owner of an archive of related photographs which it is believed found a home in the UK after Pavia's death. Her nickname stems from a fifteen-day period in Malta during which she survived 2,000 sorties by Axis bombers which dropped 3,000 tons of bombs and 14 torpedoes. It contains some fifty thousand words of verse, written initially as a mental exercise, and preserved on twenty small sheets of paper (the facsimile gives an idea of the literary compression required) and smuggled from camp to camp (and country to country) under horrifying circumstances. The author, who was captured as a colonel AIF serving with 8 Australian Division was also a Rhodes Scholar and an Olympic athlete. The plates include over twenty drawings made on the spot by Major-General HJD de Fremery which were also miraculously preserved. The frontispiece is a fine portrait of the author by Murray Griffin, the official AIF war artist in Malaya.Admiral Gervase Boswell Middleton (1893-1961) made a distinguished career (not least as captain successively of HMS Revenge and HMS Ramilles). After his appointment as Rear-Admiral he served as Admiral Superintendent of HM Dockyard Chatham from 1946-50.A remarkably well-preserved copy of a fascinating and well-nigh unique work.
