ALIYE F. MATARACI.
Trade letters as instances of economy, ideology and subjectivity.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 35 p. Trade letters as instances of economy, ideology and subjectivity. Winner of the 2002-2003 honorary mention on the monograph in the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre's biannual competition, Unveiling the History of Turkish Banking and Finance, organized with the collaboration of the European Banking History Association and the History Foundation of Turkey. This fascinating account of the business activities of the Mataraci family at the turn of the twentieth century can be read both as a case study of early Muslim Ottoman "entrepreneurship" and a depiction of the broader socio-economic context under the 1908-1918 Young Turk government. Based on family trade stories, revealed to her through interviews held with the Mataraci family elders, and an analysis of the 400 trade letters which were turned over to her, Aliye Mataraci, herself a descendant of the same family, retraces the evolution of the trade business founded by Hajji Ahmed Efendi and passed on to his three sons, and investigates the emergence of a new way of life and new identities in Ottoman Turkey. ALPAY PASINLI.
The book of Alexander Sarcophagus.
New New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 21 cm). In English. 64 p., 25 color plates. "This small art book, after an introduction of the Royal Necropolis of Sidon, examines the faces and finally the lid of the Alexander Sarcophagus in detail. At the end of the book its decorative style and ornamentation is described. The Alexander Sarcophagus has been a major attraction of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum ever since it was founded in the late nineteenth century. Although named after Alexander the Great, the sarcophagus was not his, but was probably that of Abdalonymos, the last king of Sidon (Saida). Abdalonymos owed his throne to Alexander and the latter's close friend and general, Hephaistion. The subject matter of the reliefs decorating the sarcophagus suggests that Abdalonymos was here commemorating his benefactors; the sarcophagus thus takes its name, not from the ruler who commissioned it, but from its iconography.".

ALPER MARAL, MARK LINDLEY.
Techniques of 20th-Century Turkish contemporary music. An introduction survey.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 73 p. For Turkish composers then and for quite after a while afterwards, to write "contemporary" music meant to adopt European techniques and follow European models, though with a few adjustments accommodating local tastes and institutions. But gradually in the latter half of the century a tendency to become pathfinders and not just follow Western trends emerged among some composers whose Western orientation was influenced more by American than by European schools. This book describes, with representative examples in musical notation, a series of compositional techniques that were hallmarks of this broad development.

ALPHONSE DAUDET, (1840-1897).
Izmirli kiz, 5 perde. [= L'Arlesienne]. Prep. by Kemal Emin [Bara], (1876-1957). Yeni Sahne Külliyati: 1.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) A fine modern cloth bdg. Ex-library copy. 12mo. (16,5 x 12,5 cm). In Ottoman script. [1], 107 p. Roumi: 1336 = Gregorian: 1920. Izmirli kiz. 5 perde. [L'Arlesienne]. Prep. by Kemal Emin [Bara], (1876-1957). Yeni Sahne Külliyati: 1. L'Arlésienne is a short story, written by Alphonse Daudet and first published in his collection Letters From My Windmill (Lettres de mon moulin) in 1869. On a commission from Léon Carvalho, the author transformed the story in 1872 into a play in three acts and five tableaux with music and chorus. Georges Bizet wrote incidental music for the play's first production on 1 October 1872, at the Vaudeville Theatre (now the Gaumont). The play was not successful and closed after only 21 performances. The music score was later used for two suites of the same name, the first established by Bizet himself in November 1872, the second after Bizet's 1875 death, by Ernest Guiraud. Another play was originally scheduled for the night of 1 October 1872, but it was withdrawn by the censors at the last minute and L'Arlésienne was substituted. Many of the patrons were less than happy with this change. Daudet's play formed the basis of the Italian opera L'arlesiana (1897), text by Leopoldo Marenco, music by Francesco Cilea. (Source: Wikipedia). This is an adaptation by Kemal Emin Bara was an officer, theater actor, poet, writer, sculptor, painter, otherwise he was a versatile artist. He had learned French, Arabic and Persian. He translated plays from French into Turkish, wrote scripts, played in theaters and films himself. He had worked for Istanbul City Theaters (Istanbul Sehir Tiyatrolari). He was the son of Mehmet Emin Pasha, a naval secretary. Özege 9711.; TBTK 8170.; OCLC 657006992. AMALIA SKARLATOU LEVI.
Evanescent happiness: Ottoman Jews encounter modernity. The case of Lea Mitrani and Joseph Niego, (1863-1923).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 274 p. Evanescent happiness: Ottoman Jews encounter modernity. The case of Lea Mitrani and Joseph Niego, (1863-1923). This book aims to be a collective biography of Joseph Niego and Lea Mitrani, two Ottoman Jews, whose lives spanned a sixty-year period of profound changes for Ottoman Jewry. Born in Edirne, Joseph and Lea were educated in the schools of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. Subsequently, they were sent to Paris in order to be trained as teachers and be sent back to help "regenerate" Ottoman Jews through a Western-style education. After their marriage, Joseph was appointed director of the agricultural school "Mikveh Israel," established by the Alliance in the outskirts of Jaffa, where the family would reside for twelve years. Their time in an agricultural school and contact with Zionism and the Jewish pioneers in late nineteenth-century Palestine would define their lives as a married couple and as Jews in the vortex of modernization and nationalism. While Joseph would thrive professionally, Lea would gradually lose control of her life.
