This treatise on the built environment and consequentially man-made structures in Anatolia starts from Prehistory and focuses on the dimensions of space and time in particular. Contemporary approaches to cultural historiography not only aim to highlight the continuity of the dimensions of Space and Time but also to effectively examine and explain the pursuit of the 'environmental-formal-institutional-semiotic and evolutionary.'. This comparative study covers historic periods and epochs in Anatolia, the major determinant space, whose history is now proven by archaeological findings to start around 500,000 BC. The built environment in Anatolia has a history of nearly twelve thousand years; the contextual consistency methodology followed here exerts buildings to examine the continuous stages of this cultural history in detail. Limiting the extent to 101 buildings has facilitated focusing on the comparison of their functional and formal features in a historical context; these landmarks only become iconic and gain meaning in a mutual relationship with their immediate environment. This book is a compulsive experimental attempt in contemporary cultural historiography with the classifications and chronological order that have enabled the comparisonof functional and stylistic evolution. Widely known as one of the Seven Churches from the Book of Revelation, Laodicea, or Laodikeia, is an important ancient city on the crossroads of trade routes in western Anatolia. It has been excavated by Prof. Dr. Celal Simsek of Pamukkale University since 2003. For the first volume of excavation reports, the team has prepared the results of excavations from 2004 to 2010 in the necropolis surrounding the site in all directions. The work is arranged in two volumes due to enormous size of information gathered; the first volume contains the text while the second one the catalog, reaching 1076 pages in total containing 4,800 illustrations mostly in color. The catalog presents 1603 artifacts in total from 283 tombs. Time range varies from the Hellenistic to Roman to Early Byzantine period.

A unique complex of archaeological material survives from Commagene in the first century BC. It derives from a local king, Antiochos I, and is of great interest in itself and for the study of ancient religion and art. The material consists of a large body of monumental sculpture, statues and reliefs and voluminous inscriptions about the king and his gods. The monuments are unique in their quantity, and in being precisely dated and identified. Together the texts and images provide an unrivalled opportunity for getting close to the quality and texture of an ancient cult. Antiochos I of Commagene (c. 69-36 BC) belonged at the tail-end of Hellenistic monarchy and the beginning of Roman rule in Syria and Eastern Anatolia. The scholarly text by R.R.R. Smith describes the geography and political history of Antiochos kingdom, and looks at the archaeology of his sanctuaries and his royal cult as known from inscriptions. Exquisite photography by Ahmet Ertug concentrates on some of the best preserved sculpture from two sites, Nemrud Dag and Arsameia and expresses in a new way the distinctive character and impact of these extraordinary monuments. Roman mosaics from Zeugma on the Euphrates are also included in the book. The large picture mosaics discovered in the Zeugma houses during the rescue excavations of the 1990s are sensational. They continue the tradition of Hellenistic mosaic floors with pictorial scenes of mythology, allegory, and marine fantasy, and constitute a missing link in the second century AD between picture mosaics of the later Hellenistic period and of Late Antiquity. The photography of Ahmet Ertug in this beautifully printed book will bring readers into a spectacular and less familiar landscape of the ancient world, one that felt itself already in Antiquity to be perched at the bridgehead between West and East. The photographs in the book were printed with special inks, and all color-separation and proofing was done at the digital darkroom of Ahmet Ertug. The book is 34 x 47cms in landscape format, and has 196 pages, 95 color plates and 37 figures. Printed in Germany, hardbound in Switzerland with exquisite cloth, presented in slipcase.

The Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums was appointed to lead the archaeological excavations at Uskudar, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet and Yenikapi station constructions of Marmaray and Metro Projects, among the most important transportation projects of Turkey. Our largest area of excavation is at Yenikapi on the Marmara coast, the area known as Langa, which housed the harbour of Byzantine Istanbul.
