‎Édition originale du voyage de Macartney sans 5eme volume contenant le précis de l’histoire de Chine par Huttner (1-184) et la relation de son voyage (187-358) dans une reliure uniforme . Macartney fut envoyé en Chine par George III pour établir un contact avec les élites de la dynastie Qing , en rapporter toutes les observations possibles, tant sur le plan des mœurs, de la nature que du commerce et de rétablir la balance du commerce avec la Chine , largement déficitaire . Il traversa en grande partie le pays et s’arrêta à Tianjin et à Pékin, pour arriver à Rehe, résidence de l'empereur , mais par arrogance ou ignorance , les membres de l’ambassade ne suivirent pas les protocoles des chinois et comme l’écrit Anderson (secrétaire d’ambassade) ,"En trois mots voici notre histoire : nous entrâmes à Pékin comme des mendiants, nous y séjournâmes comme des prisonniers et nous en sortîmes comme des voleurs’’. Le choc des cultures , l’incompréhension de la complexité de l’appareil politique chinois et la volonté des anglais de pénétrer le marché présageait la guerre de l’opium et l’affaiblissement de l’empire de Chine.P1-16(12)‎

‎Grand explorateur du Canada et figure majeure du commerce des fourrures à la charnière des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, Sir Alexander Mackenzie joua un rôle déterminant dans l’élargissement des connaissances géographiques et dans l’essor de l’activité économique la plus lucrative de son temps. En 1789, accompagné du chef déné Aw-gee-nah, il atteignit l’océan Arctique en parcourant en canot l’intégralité du grand fleuve qui portera par la suite son nom, devenant ainsi le premier Européen à accomplir une telle traversée. Quatre ans plus tard, en 1793, guidé par plusieurs Autochtones, il mena à bien la première expédition transcontinentale par les voies intérieures jusqu’à l’océan Pacifique. Premier voyageur à traverser le continent nord-américain au nord du Mexique, Mackenzie publia en 1801 ses cartes et ses journaux de voyage, mettant ses observations et ses expé-riences à la disposition du public européen. Par l’ampleur de ses explorations et par son sens aigu des affaires, il contribua de manière décisive au développement du commerce de la fourrure dans le Nord et l’Ouest du Canada, dans un contexte de concurrence particulièrement vive entre les compagnies.‎

Dominique Magnan (1731–1796), a learned French abbot of the Trinità dei Monti convent, of the order of the minims, in Rome, who was deeply involved in the intellectual life of his community during the second half of the 18th century.  He studied at the University of Avignon, then joined the Minims of La Ciotat at age 20, where he began his career as a collector of ancient coins and medals. Appointed professor of theology in Marseille, he continued his work. He got in touch with the most famous antiquaries of the time, both in Italy and Germany, and speedily acquired an extensive reputation. His first books received critical acclaim.
