Il violino ha svolto un ruolo di partico lare importanza nella storia della musi- Ca europea, eppure la sua origine ei suoi primi sviluppi sono tuttora avvolti nell'oscurità. La maggior parte delle storie del violino comincia con l'attività dei famosi maestri artigiani di Lombardia, ma cosa era avvenuto prima? Lo studio degli affreschi e dei dipinti di Gaudenzio Ferrari e della sua scuola, tuttora esistenti in chiese e cappelle della Lombardia e del Piemonte, può gettare nuova luce sulle origini dello strumento, e datarne gli inizi assai prima che i liutai lombardi aprano le loro botteghe di Brescia e di Cremona. E questo uno dei temi che fanno l'interesse del volume in cui Emanuel Winternitz ha raccolto organicamente una serie di saggi di iconografia musicale. La pittura di Raffaello, Tiziano, Filippino Lippi e dei Fiamminghi; le miniature medievali, le tarsie degli studi di Federigo di Montefeltro a Gubbio e a Urbino, tutte queste opere e altre ancora si sono rivelate una fonte preziosa di informazioni su strumenti quali la cetra, la citola, il liuto, la lira da braccio, sulle tecniche con cui erano costruiti, sui problemi che ponevano all'esecutore. Ma Winternitz non si limita a studiare questi aspetti "tecnici", pur così essenziali per la storia della musica. Attraverso un'analisi puntuale, sempre sor retta da una profonda competenza storico-critica, egli giunge a dare un'interpretazione globale delle varie opere d'arte, illuminando l'influenza della tradizione classica, i rapporti tra l'artista e le idee del suo tempo, l'impiego simbolico che i pittori facevano dei vari strumenti (un certo tipo di strumento a fiato o ad arco, utilizzato in un soggetto mitologico, dava un significato diverso alla scena. Il volume può dunque esser letto anche come una guida originale all'arte e al pensiero del Rinascimento. Emanuel Winternitz, nato a Vienna nel 1898, vive negli Stati Uniti dal l1938. Per oltre trent'anni ha diretto presso il Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York la collezione di strumenti musicali C. Brown, portandola all'attuale consistenza di oltre 400 strumenti. Ha insegnato storia della musica nelle Università Columbia e Yale, ed è un esperto conoscitore dell'arte italiana, cui ha dedicato numerose pubblicazioni.

Un progetto ambizioso perché affrontato con elementi privi di qualsivoglia preparazione musicale, importante per l'aspetto istituzionale dell'iniziativa. Si decide di iniziare quest'avventura per la buona volontà di una decina di volenterosi agenti, desiderosi di accrescere il proprio patrimonio musicale e di donare lustro alla città che rappresentano. Ma la musica è contagiosa e la Corale cresce, aumentano i consensi e con essi le manifestazioni locali e non a cui la stessa è chiamata a partecipare. Ne deriva la necessità di adeguare le partiture di brani patriottici, sacri e popolari alle esigenze di un coro misto a quattro voci assolutamente amatoriale; ritrascrivere ed elaborare questi brani è stato per me il passo successivo assolutamente spontaneo. Oggi mi trovo qui, a raccogliere in una collana di tre libri di musica corale il mio lavoro di scrittura musicale. Un grazie a tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile questa mia ennesima esperienza e grazie a quel bimbo nato con la musica in testa...
