‎The exceedingly rare offprint, inscribed presentation copy, of Davy’s milestone paper in which he shows that electricity is capable of decomposing the most stable elements. The paper was central to any chemical affinity theory in the first half of the nineteenth century and Berzelius, one of the founders of modern chemistry, considered it ""one of the best memoirs which has ever enriched the theory of chemistry”. Davy early concluded that the production of electricity in simple electrolytic cells resulted from chemical action and that chemical combination occurred between substances of opposite charge. He therefore reasoned that electrolysis, the interactions of electric currents with chemical compounds, offered the most likely means of decomposing all substances to their elements. “These views were explained in 1806 in his lecture “On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity,” for which, despite the fact that England and France were at war, he received the Napoleon Prize from the Institut de France (1807). This work led directly to the isolation of sodium and potassium from their compounds (1807) and of the alkaline-earth metals magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium from their compounds (1808).” (Britannica). ‎First printing of this importent paper in which Davy ""finally put it beyond doubt that carbon and diamond were chemically identical" that neither all acids nor all alkalies contained oxygen" and that oxygen enjoyed no unique status as the supporter of combustion, but rather that heat was a consequence of any violent chemical change.""(DSB).""In Florence he (Davy) burnt a diamond in oxygen, using the burning glass of the Accademia del Cimento, and foundthat it has the same composition as pure charcoal. He found that a diamond ignited in oxygen by a burning glass continued to burn when the source of external heating is removed, and only carbonic acid gas and no moisture was formed.""(Partington IV:p. 61).‎

‎First appearance of an importent paper in which Davy's states, that the voltaic pile only works under certain conditions, and only when the conducting substance between the plates is capable of oxydating the zink. The principle discovered here guided Davy in designing new types of pile, with elements chosen from the whole variety of known metals.‎

‎First edition of this importent work which is considered the first text book dealing with the application of chemistry to agriculture. It is the ""first serious attempt to apply chemistry to agriculture (which) remained a standard work until displaced by Justus Liebig's publications a generation later"" (DSB).""An importent book that introduced the era of scientific farming and the use of ""chemically balanced"" fertilizers.... Davy, the first to use the term 'agricultural chemistry', was also the first to point out that agricultural chemistry is concerned with only a limited number of elements. The most complete list of elements that had yet appeared is given (pp. 39-44), including chlorine, which Davy had proven an element. Davy here recognizes the importence of soil analysis and the measurement of its physical properties. Oxygen can get through the gauze and feed the flame. The heat of the flame, however, is dissipated by the metal and explosive gases outside the lamp and not ignited. Greatmystery surrunded those expensive and supposedly rare substances. Dufay detested mysteries and held as a guiding principle that a given physical property, however bizarre, must be assumed characteristic of a large class of bodies, not of isolated species. He found that almost everything except metals and very hard gems could be made phosphorescent: he depressed the phosphor market by describing his procedure: and he became sensitive to the endless small variations in the physical properties of bodies. The best-known part of this work is the statement of the law of constant atomic heats that bears their names, .... They began with the fundamental problem of measuring quantities of heat, which involved a critical analysis of thermometric scales. In 1804-1805 Gay-Lussac had carried out a comparison of mercury and air thermometers between 0°C. and 100°C. The insight had far reaching implications as it showed a new way to Dalton's atomic theory. The 2 first was awarded the price of the Academy in 1818 and was leading up to the last paper in which they formulted the ""Law of the Constancy of product of atomic weight and specific heat""""They (Dulang and Petit) were concerned with the specific heats of elements"" but if these elements really existed as atoms, it seemed possible that there might be a connection between trhe weight of the atom and the amount of heat aquired to raise the temperature of a given weight of that element by a certain amount."" ‎First appearance of a historical paper in chemistry. stating a new way to organize organic chemistry.When Liebig visited Paris in 1837, he persuaded Dumas to accept the ethyl theory, and in a joint memoir (written by Liebig) presented on 23 October 1837 to the Paris Academy (the paper offered) they asserted that ""in inorganic chemistry the radicals are simple"" in organic chemistry they are compounds - that is the sole difference. The laws of combination, the laws of reaction, are the same in the two branches of chemistry"" (Partington, vol. IV, p. 351).""In the paper ""Note on the present state of organic chemistry"" .... (Dumas and Liebig)) claim to have found the key to systematically organizing organic chemistry, basing research not on the elements, as in inorganic chemistry, but on the radicals. ‎First appearance of the paper which states the correct weight of the carbon atom. This research had profound influence on the development of organic chemistry. The paper in full was published the year after (1841) in ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique"".""From 1840 onward he carried out an important revision of the atomic weights of thirty elements. His most valuable contribution in this field was his very precise determination of the atomic weight of carbon (jointly with his pupil Stas) in 1840. A previously accepted weight, determined by Berzelius as C = 12.20 (O = 16), was shown to be incorrect. Dumas proved that C = 12±.002 (O = 16) or C = 75 (O = 100). The analysis was made by burning diamond and artificial and natural graphite in oxygen"" the carbon dioxide formed was weighed in potash solution. The results were in close agreement. The ""new"" weight of carbon had a great effect on the progress of organic chemistry.""(DSB).‎
