From the preface: "Eleven years ago i.e in 1939 I published a volume entitled MOLECULAR SPECTRA AND MOLECULAR STRUCTURE I. DIATOMIC MOLECULES which was followed in 1945 by a second volume INFRARED AND RAMAN SPECTRA OF POLYATOMIC MOLECULES. The first volume has been out of print for a number of years but the demand for it seemed to justify a new edition. Although the book has been completely revised and brought up to date its general plan has remained substantially unchanged. Concerning this plan it seems therefore appropriate to quote from the preface of the 1939 first edition: 'I have endeavored to give a presentation which is readable by the beginner in the field and also will be useful to those who do or want to do research work in this field. In order to assist the former I have frequently made use of small type for those sections that are not necessary for an understanding of the fundamentals. For the benefit of those working in the field numerous references to original papers have been included. A satisfactory presentation of molecular spectra and molecular structure is nowadays not possible without treating thoroughly apart from the empirical results the theoretical background also. Therefore I have included as much of the theory of molecular spectra as is possible without going into the more difficult mathematical details. A large number of diagrams graphical representations of eigenfunctions and potential curves as well as energy level diagrams serve to illustrate and to explain the theory. On the other hand I have added numerous carefully selected spectrograms of bands and band systems some of which have been taken specially for this purpose in order to give an accurate idea of the experimental material that forms the basis of the developments. While of course most of the material presented is not new it seems that the actual procedure followed in analyzing a band spectrum has not previously been given as specifically in a book of this kind. The same holds for the applications of band spectra to other parts of physics to chemistry and to astrophysics given in the last chapter. I hope that both these features will be found useful.' A geophysicist and physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA 1965 New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press. Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions there were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.". Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions there were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics." Bound in the original red pebble-grain cloth with black accents and gold lettering on the spine and front cover. Karl Langenbeck was former Superintendent of Rookwood Pottery. This copy originally belonged to the distinguished geologist Henry Stephens Washington 1867-1934 and is twice signed by him. Beneath one signature Washington has written: "Locust N.J. 1896." The book also bears the small ink stamp of the geophysicist and physical chemist Robert B. Sosman. Both Washington and Sosman were associated for decades with the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. According to the DSB in 1895 Washington was serving as a mineralogy instructor at Yale but soon after established a private laboratory at Locust New Jersey. Washington's book MANUAL OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ROCKS long remained the standard reference on the subject. He also co-authored QUANTITATIVE CLASSIFICATION OF IGNEOUS ROCKS which was the basis for the CIPW system of igneous rock taxonomy named CIPW for Cross Iddings Pirsson and Washington. According to Charles Milton Henry S. Washington's part in this was certainly one of his "most significant and enduring contributions to the science of geology: transforming the 'coordinates' of an igneous rock composition -- the list of essential oxide amounts reported in the bulk analysis -- into the chemical coordinates now known as the 'CIPW' norm. The ingenious schedule of calculations. is one of the signal triumphs of the golden age of petrography. What survives -- and thrives -- of the CIPW system is the norm calculation itself. Generations of petrologists have discovered. the norm often provides a characterization of rock composition more immediately meaningful than the oxide vector.
