Mahindra B. Bhaduri Sarat Chandra Roy
A Mundari-English Dictionary [Hardcover]
Mundari English Dictionary is a by product of the master researchers and scintillating scholarship of Sarat Chandra Roy, whose anthropological work on the Mundas of Chotanagpur and Santal Parganas remains unsurpassed even till today. His compilation of about six hundred words of Mundari language in a note book contained the seed out of which this dictionary has flourished. On the eve of its compilation about fifty years ago, Mundari language was spoken by over 60,000 Mundas and other akin tribals. The dialects of the Mundari family of speech, to which Santa, Birhar and other tongues belong, are, besides Chotanagpur, also spoken in the Santal Parganas which adjoin some of the Bengal districts. It is on account of this geographical spread over of the Mundari family of speech that a large number of words from Bengali, Hindi and Sanskrit have crept into the fabric of the Mundari language. A lot of painstaking efforts have gone in coming the English equivalents of the tribal Mundari language. Despite a lot of transformation in the tribal world of the Mundas, there appears to be no depreciation in the value and relevance of his master dictionary for the anthropologists, linguists and administrators engaged in the onerous task of tribal studies. The Title 'A Mundari-English Dictionary written/authored/edited by Mahindra B. Bhaduri Sarat Chandra Roy', published in the year 2002. Art and Culture of Marginalised Nomadic Tribes in Andhra Pradesh [Hardcover]
India is rich in its oral tradition. Its antiquity defies historical inquiry. Indian folklore offers diversity in the forms of expression while retaining the unity of theme, i.e. Dharma., The forms may be changing periodically to suit the times. The purpose of these popular art forms has been the same in a way as the classical arts. They provide education through entertainment. Andhra Desa, comprising roughly the present state of Andhra Pradesh, is very significant in its folk tradition in variety of forms. Numerous producing and service castes so far maintained their own sub castes of bards to retain their collective memory of the community and family histories besides propagating the Puranic knowledge and stories from great epics. The dependent sub-castes who have been so far preserving these arts and ancient knowledge are speedily disappearing due to lack of patronage and changing life-style. In this context, this book, the result of a painstaking research involving lot of field work may serve as a tribute to those unselfish barefoot narrators and preservers of history of bygone ages. Mythology of the People of the Sikkim [Hardcover]
Mythology is a miscellaneous collection of old tales and legends which embraces all of what we now call religion, science and philosophy (natural moral and metaphysical). The Myths are the spiritual instructions of our forefathers. The mythical stories are not entertainment stories or folk-tales; because they can be told only at certain times of the year and under certain conditions. The belief systems of all the 14 (fourteen) mountain tribes and races of Sikkim were sandwiched between the faith of Buddhism from the north and Hinduism from the west in the beginning; and then Christianity from the south mainly during the chiefdom periods of Sikkim (1642-1975 A.D.) and Nepal (1769-2008 A.D.); affecting their indigenous belief systems tremendously. Today, the different tribes and races of Sikkim have awakened not against anybody else but themselves from within and have started rediscovering their own belief systems and traditions. Many of these hill tribes or races have adopted many well developed religions of the world with insignificant traces of their own within it. This book is an attempt to collect the valuable information of these lesser known oriental “Belief System” or “Religion” and “Mythologies” of the different ethnic mountain people of Sikkim for the first time for further research and development.
