brossura Questa seconda edizione del presente volume, che delinea il profilo storico dei signori e baroni succedutisi nella città di Castellammare del Golfo, dall'istituzione della signoria fino all'abolizione del feudalesimo in Sicilia nel 1812, si è resa necessaria per aggiornare dati storici e documenti alla luce di recenti studi e ritrovamenti. In particolare nella sezione Documenti vengono pubblicati gli atti di battesimo dei principi Naselli e dei loro familiari nati a Castellammare, rinvenuti nell'archivio parrocchiale della Chiesa Madre, trascritti e annotati, ma soprattutto si trascrive l'iscrizione scolpita sulla lapide sepolcrale della principessina Emanuela Naselli, da poco venuta alla luce e che costituisce l'unica testimonianza di questo genere conservatasi a Castellammare. Tali documenti hanno notevole importanza storica perché rimediano a inesattezze e imprecisioni degli storici che dell'argomento si sono occupati senza avere attinto a queste fonti di prima mano.

La mitologia della nazione e le due guerre mondiali
brossura Durante buona parte dell'ottocento molti si volsero a rivendicare la libertà e l'indipendenza nazionale. Ma tale rivendicazione era per prevalenti aspetti di carattere patriottico. Sul finire del XIX secolo però inizia ad imporsi l'idea della grandezza della nazione e dello stato nazionale. A seguito di ciò si sviluppa per grandi linee la forte coscienza nazionalista che comporterà l'assolutizzazione, la sacralizzazione del mito della nazione. E la mitologia della nazione si incide fortemente nel divenire delle grandi ideologie del novecento portando a ben due guerre mondiali e al sacrificio di milioni di individui. Forti di quanto la storia ci tramanda oggi possiamo ben dire che non con la guerra, con la supremazia ottenuta mediante la forza e la violenza e con l'imperialismo che si ottiene la realizzazione di una grande nazione. Un altro tipo di nazione è stato ed è possibile: è la nazione liberaldemocratica, che coniugando le più alte aspirazioni di libertà a quelle di eguaglianza rappresenta uno dei frutti di migliore maturazione della civiltà etico-politica occidentale. E non è stato un caso che per l'Italia l'8 settembre 1943 ha segnato la fine di un mito: il mito della nazione fascista.

Fino all'ultimo Stato. La battaglia diplomatica tra Cina e Taiwan
br. Il Nicaragua è stato l'ultimo paese, in ordine di tempo, a porre fine ai rapporti diplomatici con Taiwan e a riallacciarli con il governo di Pechino, il 10 dicembre 2021. Si tratta dell'ottava rottura, da quando la presidentessa Tsai Ing-wen è giunta al potere nel 2016, che contribuisce ad accrescere l'isolamento diplomatico di Taiwan, ormai riconosciuta da soli 14 Stati, tra i più poveri e meno sviluppati al mondo, oltre che pressoché ininfluenti a livello geopolitico, con l'unica eccezione rappresentata dalla Santa Sede. Il volume approfondisce le dinamiche geopolitiche contemporanee in atto lungo lo Stretto di Taiwan attraverso una prospettiva d'analisi storica che mette in rilievo il peso attuale dell'eredità della guerra fredda. Il "problema Taiwan", infatti, che oggi costituisce uno dei principali terreni di scontro fra la Repubblica popolare cinese e gli Stati Uniti, è a tal proposito un caso emblematico. Si esaminano le tappe che hanno contrassegnato i rapporti tra Cina e Taiwan, i fattori che hanno contribuito all'emergere della questione, i passaggi di quella che appare come una vera e propria battaglia diplomatica all'ultimo Stato.
