‎Le Pays d'Israël. Collection de cent vues prises d'après nature dans la Syrie et la Palestine pendant son voyage d'exploration géographique en 1851 et 1852.‎

‎Paris, Veuve Jules Renouard, 1857. Elephant folio (440 x 570 mm). (1), 88 pp. With 99 lithographed plates and 1 engraved map. Contemporary red half morocco, raised spine bands, spined ruled and titled in gilt. Marbled endpapers.‎

‎First edition of this rare and splendid series of Palestinian views, uncommonly complete with all the plates. The ninety-nine beautiful lithographs, most subtly tinted in blues and warm tones, show magnificent views of Beirut, Sidon, Mount Hermon, the ruins of Hazour, Mellia, Akka, Samaria, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Kidron, Bethlehem, Hebron, the Dead Sea, and Gaza. The final plate is a map of the region with a few hand-coloured lines. All bear the engraved signature of Wilhelm van de Velde (1818-98) and the dry-stamp of the publisher. This copy includes the often-missing lithographed title-page and is one of only 300 volumes ever published. After this small print run, all lithographic stones were destroyed. - From the collection of Baron James de Rothschild, featuring the distinctive roundel bookplate of the Bibliothèque du Baron James de Rothschild. Born in Frankfurt under the Holy Roman Empire, James Rothschild initially moved to Paris to aid his brother Nathan Mayer Rothschild's business there; shortly, he established himself and his family at the heart of France's industrial revolution, and charted a steady course through the upheavals of 19th century French politics. Elevated to the status of Baron, his interest in art was genuine, and his collection well-respected. - Light exterior wear, with some dampstaining affecting the margins throughout. - From the collection of the banker James Mayer Rothschild (1792-1868), founder of the French branch of the prominent Rothschild family (armorial bookplate and label of the Château de Ferrières to front pastedown). - Blackmer 1722.‎

‎[Protectorate of Aden]‎

‎[Sketchbook of watercolour views of Aden].‎

‎Aden and Karachi, 1875. Oblong folio (264 x 180 mm). 28 ff. 36 watercolours, some on both recto and verso. With two manuscript letters laid in. Contemporary morocco-backed blue cloth.‎

‎A series of very fine original watercolours of 19th century Aden, painted by a British soldier stationed in Aden and Karachi, about 1875. - The population of Aden appears in a series of landscape paintings and especially in portraits, almost all of which appear to be plein-air candids. These show Jewish merchants of feathers and woven rattan, Somalis fetching water or at work, and Arab men and women strolling in elaborate traditional dress, from a frowning workman to an "Arab of distinction" clasping a sword in one hand, the hilt of a fine golden dagger tucked into his belt. Each is clearly sketched from the likeness of an individual person, with distinct features and personalities. Pencil notes in the margins even sometimes describe the subject: "An Elderly Arab Maiden - rather bashful" reads one. - One of the portraits is in fact captioned and signed in Persian by its sitter, the secretary ("munshi") Seyyed Vahid Ali of the port of Aden, dated 1875 CE and 1292 H. As a secretary of this kind, Seyyed Vahid Ali would have been highly educated and literate, an adept translator and interpreter with an understanding of regional politics. He may have been one of the many "munshi" employed by the British since the earliest incursions of the East India Company in the subcontinent, or he may have had his own work in Yemen. - The artist behind the sketchbook was a British soldier of the 113 Locating Battery of the Royal Artillery, likely by the surname Russell (as judged by the letters addressed to Russell's widow, laid in). Evidently Russell was stationed in Yemen and India, as several of the paintings at the end of the sketchbook show similar scenes of Karachi and its inhabitants. Throughout, the quality of draughtsmanship is excellent, and the personalities and landscapes of 1870s Aden are depicted vividly and sympathetically. - Light exterior wear to sketchbook, a few minor smudges which do little to detract from the paintings; in quite good condition. - 1) With two letters from a member of the 113 Locating Battery RA laid in, addressed to a Mrs. Russell, who evidently sent her husband's sword and a photograph album to the Battery after his death in 1959. The sketchbook was likely in the possession of Mrs. Russell, her son R. P. Russell of Sussex, or with the Battery. - 2) Latterly in the collection of the U.S. conservationist Esmond Bradley Martin (1941-2018), long a U.N. special envoy for the conservation of rhinoceros.‎

‎Lisboa, Francisco da Silva, 1746. Small folio (210 x 295 mm). (12), 603, (1) pp. With 21 engraved plates (1 folding). Contemporary full brown mottled calf with giltstamped red morocco spine label. All edges red.‎

‎An early edition of this important maritime work, fully revised from the 1712 edition: a navigational guide to the routes and ports of the East and West Indies, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, including such coasts and ports as Havana, Puerto Rico, Timor, Macao, Ormuz, Khor Fakkan ("Orfacam"), Ras al Hadd ("Rasalgate"), Zanzibar, Goa, Ascension, Mallorca, Cadiz, Malta, etc., many of which are shown in engraved maps. "Cet ouvrage a été longtemps utile" (Brunet). The long-popular pilot's manual was based on the "Arte practica de navegar" by the Portuguese cosmographer and navy engineer Luis Serrão Pimentel, first published posthumously in 1681 by the author's son Manuel Pimentel (1650-1719); all editions since 1699 appeared under Manuel's name only. It was reprinted in Lisbon as late as 1819. - The ongoing popularity of the work is attested to by three handwritten navigational documents from early 19th century (two dated 1803 and 1819, respectively), loosely inserted. - Some waterstaining throughout, mainly confined to margins; some damage to lower edge of first gathering professionally repaired. Some worming with slight loss to text. - Near-contemporary handwritten ownership of Miguel Barandica to flyleaf. - Sabin 62883. Borba de Moraes II, 148. Barbosa Machado III, 340. Brunet IV, 656. ‎Salem, George Creamer, 1854. 8vo (133 x 198 mm). X pp., (blank leaf), 253, (1) pp. Contemporary brown cloth, rebacked.‎

‎First edition of this travelogue, reflecting on the East Coast of Africa and journeys into the Arabian Peninsula, most notably Mecca and Aden. Eight chapters are dedicated to Zanzibar, six to Muscat, six to Aden, and eleven full chapters for Mecca, including discussions of everything from the ivory trade, male and female modes of dress, camels, the British bombardment and conquest of Aden, Bedouins, coffee, marriages, funerals, etiquette at homes and tables, and even business hours, naming traditions, and smoking. Described firsthand are the corporal punishments personally carried out by the young governor of Mecca, the use of rhinoceros hide on Bedouin shields, the preparation of coffee, the attitudes of children, and even the design of homes. Osgood, an American, was partial to Arab society in particular, and evidently enjoyed his time in it. - Cloth rebacked; some toning. - From the collection of the U.S. conservationist Esmond Bradley Martin (1941-2018), long a U.N. special envoy for the conservation of rhinoceros. - OCLC 4427641. ‎Jaillot, Alexis Hubert / Sanson, Nicolas‎

‎Atlas nouveau.‎

‎Paris [but Amsterdam], H. Jaillot [but: Pieter Mortier], 1692-1696. Royal folio. 2 vols. Engraved titles, 111 double-page hand-coloured engraved maps, 3 full-page fortification plans, 19 tables, 84 gazetteers, 28 full-page mapsheets showing 196 views and plans. Contemporary Dutch mottled calf, gilt, by the Double Drawer Handle Bindery.‎

‎A magnificent example of one of the largest and most beautiful world atlases of the 17th century, obviously produced as a presentation copy: the Wardington copy, in particularly fine hand colour. In many cases, the meticulously impressed hand-coloured maps appear to have their titles in proof state or even in manuscript, indicating that this was one of the earliest copies of this work produced by Mortier, perhaps even "Mortier?s first or proof copy" (Wardington Catalogue). There are often faint lines visible which have been used to justify the letters, suggesting the type was just being set, or the cartouche lettering was being drawn up by a calligrapher. - In 1690, the Amsterdam publisher Pieter Mortier obtained from French publishers the privilege to distribute their maps and atlases in Holland. He began re-engraving maps by the French Royal Geographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot (ca. 1632-1712), the partner and successor of the "Father of French cartography", Nicolas Sanson (1600-67). Beginning in 1669, Jaillot re-engraved and re-published Sanson's maps, issuing them individually and in atlases. As the world atlas passed down from Sanson to Jaillot to Mortier, it became more striking and more renowned, partly because of its augmented size, its more creative embellishments, and its higher quality paper. - The contemporary binding here is by the Double Drawer Handle Bindery, a workshop Mortier commissioned to produce bindings for some of his most important works, including his Great Bible. Jan Storm van Leeuwen suggests that Mortier may have had the "Atlas holding up the world" block tool "made especially for this project"; he records at least two other copies of the work in marbled calf bindings with this design. Given the early state of the engravings, manuscript lettering on some cartouches, lovely hand colouring, and special binding, it is possible that this copy was a prototype or exemplar used by the publisher. - Some offsetting, binding with neat repairs. - 1) James Gibbs (1682-1754), British architect, with his engraved bookplate, dated 1736. - 2) 19th century ink ownership of "P. Jackson" to front free endpapers. - 3) Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, 2nd Baron Wardington (1924-2005), with his bookplate, sold at Sotheby's, 18 October 2005, lot 203. - 4) Latterly in the Jay Walker Library of Human Imagination (Ridgefield, Connecticut). - Koeman III, Mor 1. ‎Desceliers, Pierre‎

‎Lithographed facsimile of the world map painted on vellum for Henry II, King of France.‎

‎Paris, imprimerie de Kaeppelin, [1852]. Lithographed wall map, 260 x 132 cm. 4 conjoined sheets mounted on canvas. Rolled.‎

‎Original-size facsimile of the manuscript nautical "mappemonde" executed by Pierre Desceliers in 1546, lithographed by the cartographer Eugène Rembielinski (1814-80). - Commissioned by King Francis I for his son (who would be crowned Henry II in 1547), Desceliers' "Dauphin map" or "royal world chart" is one of the most famous of the first half of the 16th century: hand-drawn and illuminated on vellum, it vividly illustrates the discoveries made during the six decades following the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. It was compiled from information that Desceliers had obtained from the other Dieppe geographers, from the shipowner Jean Ango, and the explorer Jacques Cartier. - Remarkably, the map has a dual orientation: north of the equator, the text and illustrations are reversed, suggesting that the map was in fact meant to be laid flat rather than wall-mounted so that it could be read from all sides. Thus, the vast majority of the earth's land mass, and almost all of the better-known parts of the world, is labelled as if the map were oriented with south at the top, recalling the Arab tradition exemplified by al-Idrisi's famous 12th century map. In charting the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf specifically, "the cartographers of Dieppe in northern France seem to have had direct access during the 1540s to relatively reliable Portuguese prototypes" (Couto et al., Historical Atlas of the Persian Gulf [Brepols 2006], p. 114), even if they appear to have had difficulty reading all the place names. - To the south of Borneo, Desceliers included not only an island labelled "Java Petite", but also, immediately adjacent, a vast mass of land named "Java la Grande" - an uncannily good representation of the northern coastline of Australia, albeit far north of its true location, which merges into the Great Southern Continent that itself stretches into Antarctica ("Non du tout descouverte"), extending as far as the Strait of Magellan. Probably drawing on Marco Polo as well as Portuguese portolans of various scales, Desceliers' representation "sums up everything cartographers knew about Australia in the mid 16th century" (Tooley, Landmarks of Mapmaking, p. 245). - In the tradition of French Renaissance portolans, the map is remarkable for the wealth of its illustrations. The seas are decorated with compass roses, ships and sea monsters, while the land is adorned with a multitude of scenes and representations of fantastic animals. It is framed in the northern hemisphere by a border decorated with the heads of men with long beards, and cherubim and human skulls in the southern hemisphere, representing the winds and cardinal points. In many parts of the world, Desceliers drew indigenous peoples with great precision, such as the Hottentots in South Africa and the Native Americans of North America. - In the 16th century, it was in Normandy that the most richly illustrated portolans were designed. Pierre Desceliers (1487-1574) is perhaps the most famous representative of the Dieppe school of mapmaking, and he is considered the father of French hydrography and cartography. Only two of his maps have survived. His manuscript world map from 1546 is now kept in the library of John Rylands University in Manchester (French MS 1*). The facsimile lithographed by Rembielinski in 1852 is rare: we have only found two copies in public collections, one at the BnF, the other at the National Library of Australia. - Uniformly browned throughout; several old gaps and breaks professionally repaired. - OCLC 494994160. ‎Camões, Luis de‎

‎The Lusiad, or, Portugals historicall Poem.‎

‎London, Humphrey Mosely, 1655. Large 4to (195 x 288 mm). (22), 224 pp. With an engraved portrait frontispiece of Camões (ca. 255 x 155, plate mark), and folding engraved portraits of Prince Henry of Portugal (ca. 240 x 198 mm) and Vasco de Gama (268 x 180 mm). In full 19th century red crushed Zaehnsdorf morocco with gilt doublures, watered silk endpapers, gilt edge, and gilt title to spine.‎

‎The first English edition of the great epic poem of Portuguese exploration, based by Camões on Vasco de Gama?s discovery of the sea route to India in 1497/98. "The 'Lusiads' is a synthesis of all the elements included in the reality and myth of Portugal's overseas expansion. It captures the heroism and the suffering, the glory and the disillusionment, the generosity and the avarice which characterized the national enterprise. The author himself was the only major Portuguese poet to participate personally in the voyage, the wars, and the rigors of life in Asia. His epic successfully combines the personal with the national experience and provides thereby an intelligible, individualistic expression of the collective enterprise in which Portuguese of all walks of life had engaged either directly or indirectly" (Lach). - In the early 1530s the great Portuguese historian João de Barros had called for an epic poem of Portuguese exploration and discovery. Luis de Camões (1524-80) answered that call four decades later with the 1572 publication of "Os Lusíadas". Camões was educated in a monastic school in Coimbra, and produced poetry and plays at a young age. In his early twenties he was banished from Lisbon after producing a play considered disparaging to the royal family. He served as a soldier in the Portuguese forces besieging Ceuta in North Africa, where he lost an eye. Camões returned to Lisbon in 1550, but found himself in more trouble, and was pardoned by the King on condition he serve the Crown in India for five years. He arrived in Goa in late 1553 and stayed there briefly before joining an expedition to the Malabar Coast. In 1556 he left Goa again for the East Indies, taking part in the military occupation of Macao, where he remained for many months. On his return trip to India, he was shipwrecked off the Mekong and wandered in Cambodia before reaching Malacca and eventually returning to Goa. - Camões's inspiration for his epic poem was Virgil's Aeneid. He made the explorer Vasco de Gama his great hero, using his exploits to glorify the achievements of the Portuguese nation, the "sons of Lusus". Beyond the glorification of Portuguese colonial exploits, the Lusiads contain descriptions of the flora, fauna, and geography of Asia and India, as well as ethnographic details, informed both by Camões's own experiences as well as his familiarity with Ptolemy and Barros. The epic was immensely popular upon its publication, appearing in numerous Portuguese and Spanish editions before the end of the century. - Richard Fanshawe (1608-66) travelled to Madrid in the 1630s and there "laid the foundations of the mastery of Spanish which was to be central both to his diplomatic career and to his career as a translator of Spanish literature" (ODNB). During the Civil War he was ambassador to Spain of King Charles II in exile, but was arrested by Cromwell after the Battle of Worcester in 1651 and sent into voluntary exile at Tankersley Park in Yorkshire. There he composed the present work, dedicated to his host William Earl of Strafford. It was the first translation of a Portuguese literary work into English, though Fanshawe produced his English verse rendition via a scholarly Castilian edition, in prose, of 1639. He prefaces it with a parallel-text translation of a section from Petronius?s "Satyricon", and a translation of Tasso?s sonnet on Camões. - For the frontispiece, Fanshawe had a copy of Camões's unmistakable portrait as poet laureate in plate armor made and paired it with English verses that make the Portuguese poet speak of himself. By copying the original without alteration, the inattentive or careless anonymous engraver inverted Camões' good and bad eye. This artist can be identified with some certainty with Thomas Cross (active 1642-82), the printmaker behind the portrait of Vasco da Gama. Though cropped here, as often found in copies of Fanshawe's translation, and thus lacking Cross's signature to the lower edge, a complete copy at the British Museum attests to his authorship. That the portrait of Prince Henry of Portugal is of better quality can be attributed to the fact that the likely co-author Cross here re-used the printing plate of Thomas Cecil's portrait of Edward the Black Prince before the Battle of Poitiers from ca. 1625. Traces of the polished-out caption "Poitiers", now replaced by Ceuta, the battle that robbed Camões of his right eye, are still visible. - The portrait of Vasco da Gama with tear to fold and cropped at foot. Dampstains to lower outer corner, else a very good copy - With bookplate of the Hispanophile book collector James P. R. Lyell (1871-1948). - Wing C397. Pforzheimer 362. Wither to Prior 349. ‎Strabo‎

‎[Geographia.] Rerum geographicarum libri XVII.‎

‎Paris, typis Regiis, 1620. Folio. (12), 843, (112) pp. (4), 282, (8) pp. Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette showing arms of Louis XIII. Double-column text in Greek and Latin. Contemporary citron morocco, elaborately gilt with a semé of fleurs-de-lys and the king's crowned monogram. All edges gilt.‎

‎Enlarged and corrected second edition ("much more accurate and splendid than the first", says Dibdin) of Strabo?s "Geography", one of the earliest and most important scientific treatises of historical geography. Contains the Greek text beside Xylander's Latin translation, with commentaries by Frédéric Morel and Isaac Casaubon. Together with the works of Ptolemy and Solinus, Strabo's "Geography" constitutes the first attempt at a unified treatise of geographical knowledge. Strabo had visited Egypt and sailed up the Nile in 25 BC. Even in the introductory chapters, the author provides important details on the Arabian Peninsula: "Adjoining the Ethiopians, a needy and nomad race, is Arabia: one part of which is distinguished above all other lands by the title of Felix [i.e., Hedjaz and Nejd-ed-Ared], and the other, though not dignified by that name, is both generally believed and also said to be pre-eminently blessed. Though Homer knew of Arabia Felix, at that time it was by no means wealthy, but a wild country, the inhabitants of which dwelt for the most part in tents. It is only a small district which produces the aromatics from which the whole territory afterwards received its name, owing to the rarity of the commodity amongst us, and the value set upon it. That the Arabians are now flourishing and wealthy is due to their vast and extended trade" (bk. 1, p. 39); "Arabia Felix is bounded by the entire Arabian and Persian Gulfs, together with all the country of the tent-dwellers and the Sheikh-governed tribes. [...] Beside the ocean the country is tolerably fitted for habitation of man, but not so the centre of the country: this for the most part is barren, rugged sand desert. The same applies to the country of the Troglodytic Arabians and the part occupied by the fish-eating tribes" (bk. 2, p. 130f.). Furthermore, books 15 and 16 are devoted entirely to the Orient (bk. 16 is on Arabia in particular), while the final book 17 discusses Egypt and Libya. - Slight edge defect to upper margin of QQq3, affecting a few letters of the headline. A few marginal abrasions to the edges of the binding professionally repaired. - The personal copy of Louis XIII, King of France (1601-43), magnificently bound for him with his arms and monogram. Later in the Jesuit College, Paris (inscription on title-page). In 1624 awarded to the scholar Robert Roussel, College de Clermont, Jesuit College of Paris, as a prize for eloquence in Greek (inscription on preliminary blank). A faint, unidentified stamp on the title-page; stamp of the Bibliothèque Publique of Alençon on J2 and final leaf. - Brunet V, 554. Graesse VII, 604. Schweiger I, 303. Hoffmann III, 454.
