The Stowe Charters acquired in 1883 have already been indexed in the Catalogue of the StoweMSS. 1895-1896; and an index to Charters before the Norman Conquest will be found in Vol. IV. of Facsimiles of Ancient Charters in the British Museum 1873-1878. The more important entries however in the latter have also been inserted here. The present volume is confined to the topography of the Charters relating to the British Isles only reserving for the present all Foreign documents. One of the chief points of interest and value of this Index lies in the evolution of modern place-names from the early forms found in the oldest documents which have all been carefully traced by means of full cross-references."
