ABOUT THE AUTHOR Philippe de Commines 1447 - 1511 was a writer and diplomat in the courts of Burgundy and France. He has been called the first truly modern writer by Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve and the first critical and philosophical historian since classical times Oxford Companion to English Literature. Neither a chronicler nor a historian in the usual sense of the word his analyses of the contemporary political scene are what made him virtually unique in his own time. He is regarded as a major primary source for 15th-century European history. His writings reveal many of the less savory aspects of the reign of Louis XI and Commines related them without apology insisting that the late king's virtues outweighed his vices. ABOUT LOUIS XI Louis XI 1423 - 1483 called the Prudent was King of France from 1461 to 1483. He succeeded his father Charles VII. His taste for intrigue and his intense diplomatic activity earned him the nicknames the Cunning and the Universal Spider as his enemies accused him of spinning webs of plots and conspiracies. In 1472 the subsequent Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold took up arms against his rival Louis. However Louis was able to isolate Charles from his English allies by signing the Treaty of Picquigny 1475 with Edward IV of England. The treaty formally ended the Hundred Years' War. With the death of Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy in 1477 the dynasty of the dukes of Burgundy died out. Louis took advantage of the situation to seize numerous Burgundian territories including Burgundy itself and Picardy. Without direct foreign threats Louis was able to eliminate his rebellious vassals expand royal power and strengthen the economic development of his country. He died in 1483 and was succeeded by his only surviving son Charles VIII. ABOUT CHARLES VIII Charles VIII 1470 - 1498 called the Affable was King of France from 1483 to his death in 1498. He succeeded his father Louis XI at the age of 13. His elder sister Anne acted as regent jointly with her husband Peter II Duke of Bourbon until 1491 when the young king turned 21 years of age. During Anne's regency the great lords rebelled against royal centralization efforts in a conflict known as the Mad War 1485-1488 which resulted in a victory for the royal government. To secure his rights to the Neapolitan throne that René of Anjou had left to his father Charles made a series of concessions to neighboring monarchs and due to his revolutionary artillery conquered the Italian Peninsula without much opposition. 1944réf. 0012152Paris France Havana Cuba. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1944. Ephemera. On offer is an original typed and signed letter addressed to Dr. José Agripino Barnet former President of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Comité France-Amérique in Havana. Signed by Philippe Grousset a Free French official in Havana the letter thanks Barnet for a publication commemorating the centenary of Anatole France and notes its transmission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris. Grousset references activity on July 14 Bastille Day and the recent Liberation of Paris while invoking Anatole France and Louis Pasteur as dual symbols of Frances intellectual and scientific identity. Dated La Havane le 1er Novembre 1944 and issued on the letterhead of the Comité Français de la Libération Nationale Délégation de Cuba the correspondence reflects the deliberate use of cultural figures as instruments of diplomatic signaling in the immediate post-Liberation period.
