1667réf. 1003941667. No place 1667. Titlepage iii293pp. Contemporary mottled calf bottom of spine damaged. A nice wide-margined copy of this work. The War of Devolution 16671668 saw Louis XIV's French armies overrun the Hapsburg controlled Spanish Netherlands. Louis's claims to the Spanish Netherlands were tenuous. His wife Maria Theresa the daughter of Philip IV had renounced her rights of a Spanish inheritance in return for a large dowry at the time of her marriage. The dowry had yet to be paid however. When Philip died in 1665 Louis' lawyers justified Louis's possible claims by arguing that while Spanish laws of succession meant the throne of Philip IV would pass to his son Charles II ancient laws of Duchy of Brabant ruled that the Spanish Netherlands could "devolve" to Philip's daughter from his first marriage Louis's wife. France pressed the claim in 1667 and the present work was a kind of war announcement. The Latin edition was published the same year as the French one. unknown
1572réf. RF 1076Royal Provision of Phillip II Confirming and Ratifying the Privileges Granted by the Masters of the Order of Santiago to the Village of Corral de Almaguer Toledo 1572 Manuscript. Small folio. 12 1/4 x 8 1/4". 8 double-sided vellum manuscript leaves originally bound together now unbound hand painted and decorated in blue red and gilt at various points throughout the text. The first page is hand-painted and decorated along the edge and includes a large decorative initial in multiple colors. Manuscript text in gothic style. Signed "Yo el Rey" on the back of the final leaf by King Phillip II of Spain in 1572. ATTRACTIVELY ILLUMINATED EARLY MANUSCRIPT. JUDAICA INTEREST. Our manuscript contains the 4 confirmed provisions originally drafted by Infante Henry Duke of Aragon 1421 and 1440 Alonso de Cárdenas here listed as "Alfoso" sic in 1480 and then "The Catholic Kings" in 1494 all of whom at various times served as "Grand Masters of the Order of Santiago". The provisions were instigated against the Jewish communities of the villages of Corral de Almaguer and Ocana in Toledo province. Residents of the towns affiliated with the Order of Santiago repeately complained throughout the 15th and 16th centuries to the the authorities of that order of that the Jews and later conversos had bought land from Christians and had not paid any taxes on their purchases. Ultimately the Jews of Corral de Almaguer were ordered to pay comparable taxes to the Christians for said property but the Jews of Ocana were excepted because of their previous payments of other taxes. Given the fact that this manuscript copy dates from 1572 and was signed and reconfirmed by King Phillip II so long after the expulsion of 1492 shows there were still clearly tensions and persecution of local conversos even long after the communities had converted to Catholicism. The top left margin on the front of the first leaf contains a handwritten note in ink stating in Spanish "It consists of this-privilege that Juan Collado was a secretary of the Order of Santiago in the year 1480". There are a few additional scant marginal notes in ink throughout and additional handwritten notes and signatures some indecipherable on the verso of the final leaf under the King's signature. This document provide a fascinating and invaluable resource to those studying the history of Jews in Spain during the 15th and 16th centuries. Text in Spanish. hardcover

1783réf. CA114212 pages with crest to title page. Quarto 11 1/4" x 8" single folded sheet housed in a custom made enclosure. First edition. Cedula Latin means in general an order or authorization; in earlier times such a document on the authority of the king or a royal decree which for Spain and Spanish America was a decree issued directly by the monarch. During the second half of the eighteenth century the Spanish Crown monopolized the tobacco industry in its American colonies creating vertically integrated organisations which included factories for the production of cigars and cigarettes. Few economic activities were more vital to the development of the Spanish American economies that the cultivation manufacture and commercialization of tobacco. Tobacco was the second most important export industry in Spanish America at the time. The decision of the Bourbon monarchs to monopolize the industry was a critical component of their plan to increase government revenues through a renewed contract with the colonists. This Spanish royal decree issued at the end of the War of American Independence to take effect January 1 1784 alters the basis for the tobacco trade set up as a monopoly under Phillip V and establishing new regulations for the business. This decree mainly affected the American colonies including Louisiana. Condition: Some soiling on front and back; last page has columns of numbers and damp-stain along edge one inner page heavily soiled near head else a very good copy in a fine enclosure. 1920réf. RF1178History and Stories for Children and Teenagers by One of the Most Important Spanish Publishers of All Times 12vo; 4 series 20 issues each: "Cuentos" "Vida de hombres celebres" "Cuentos" "Episodios historicos"; original illustrated wrappers; fine condition. Ramón Sopena 1867-1932 was a Spanish editor who founded the publishing house that bears his name in 1894 in Barcelona. He was a multifaceted editor that published essentially dictionaries and encyclopedias but also journals. For some time he also edited erotic works and then opted for popular literature. In the children's genre he published small works in series such as the ones we offer here: the CHILDREN COLLECTION or the LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN. The printing house had a long life since it closed only in 2004. The purpose of the CHILDREN'S COLLECTION "Episodios historicos" "Historical episodes" was to make relevant topics of Spain's history available to children. "Vida de hombres celebres" "Life of famous men" are brief biographies of characters from Spanish and universal history. Finally the two series of "Cuentos" "Tales" are small stories without specifying their authors. # WorldCat: no copies of this series in US Libraries.
