1787réf. 271Edinburgh: Assigns of Alexander Kincaid 1787. Very good. Two works in two volumes. Large Octavo 211 x 130 mm. Collation: BIBLE: A-4A8 complete. PSALMS: A-E8 complete. Contemporary Scottish bindings: red morocco elaborately tooled in gilt to a "Chippendale" motif smooth spines gilt; marbled endpapers a.e.g. in vol. 1 the front joint expertly repaired and tape removed from inner hinges. Preserved in a protective cloth case. INNOVATIVE AND HIGHLY UNUSUAL SCOTTISH CHIPPENDALE ROCOCO BINDINGS COMBINING CHINOISERIE AND NEOCLASSICAL ELEMENTS EXHIBITING THE INDEPENDENCE OF SCOTTISH WORK AT THIS TIME. The present example is a striking hybrid of late 18th-century decorative art in Britain the likes of which we have not encountered hitherto. Here "oriental" birds and peacocks are juxtaposed with patriotic depictions of Britannia uncharacteristically surmounted by a fleur-de-lis bold anchors columns sunbursts dripping garlands flowers sheaves of wheat and urns. Presented in the Chippendale style the present binder who is as yet unnamed introduces rococo ornaments while enclosing all of the above with an unmistakably neoclassical greek-key roll. EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY ROCOCO BINDINGS OF THIS QUALITY ARE RARE PARTICULARLY THOSE EXECUTED IN SCOTLAND. Rococo book arts in Scotland have been almost completely unexplored on account of the paltry number of examples with which we are able to study. Robert Adam's designs for the bindings of his "Ruins of Spalatro" 1764 is a bold statement of the neoclassical for he was justly celebrated. But we now know that Adam was not exclusively "Grecian." David Pullins' heroic archival research in Sir John Soane's Museum has shown that Adam received three previously unexamined commissions for a seemingly antithetical kind of decoration which he calls "neoclassical chinoiserie" specifically Adam's drawings for an unrealized chinoiserie looking-glass dated 1769 for Edwin Lascelles 1st Earl of Harewood. SOURCE: "Robert Adam's Neoclassical Chinoiserie" in: West 86th: A Journal of Decorative Arts Design History and Material Culture online. We would argue that the present bindings exhibit such a blend of Chippendale chinoiserie rococo and neoclassical. For a general note on English "Chippendale" and "Chinoiserie" bindings see G.D. Hobson "English Bindings of J.R. Abbey" p. 126. ¶ Our bindings may be linked to four others -- all greatly inferior -- which share the large "eagle" tool in common as noted by Mirjam Foot: 1. 1959réf. 596184New York: Vantage Press 1959. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Forewords by John N. Rosen and O. Spurgeon English. Octavo. 104pp. Owner stamp and signature of a noted American psychologist on the front fly and binding a trifle worn else fine in modestly rubbed near fine dust jacket. Brody was a longtime professor of psychiatry at Temple University. John N. Rosen is quoted on the jacket: "From my point of view Dr. Brody's work constitutes a turning point in the presentation of this subject. ." Although Rosen was respected in his time the story of his practice is a tragic one. Here is a lengthy quote from a review of Edward Dolinick's Madness on the Couch written by Joanne Sitarski and published in The Harvard Crimson: "John Rosen a psychiatrist from Philadelphia did not beat around the bush when he treated his patients. Looking into their eyes he told neurotic patients they were 'crazy' accused schizophrenics of 'lying' and threatened to 'kill' any patient who acted 'abnormal.' His methodology was drastic brutal and surprisingly well admired by his peers. He was awarded a faculty position at Temple University Medical School and the Man of the Year award from the American Academy of Psychotherapy. From the 1950s to the late 1970s Rosen was psychiatry's Superman; he soared to the peak of his profession with the claim that he could cure any psychosis. But like all superheroes Rosen too was make-believe. In 1983 he was forced to surrender his medical license. Rosen faced 67 violations of the Pennsylvania Medical Practices Act that ranged from curing schizophrenics who had never had schizophrenia to sequestering patients in dungeons and cells extending his definition of 'drastic' to a new level of inhumane." A vanity-published apologia for the work of a discredited psychologist known for his brutal tactics. Vantage Press hardcover books

1922réf. 11290New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1922. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Ouspensky was a Russian esotericist known for his expositions of the early work of the Greek-Armenian teacher of esoteric doctrine George Gurdjieff. He met Gurdjieff in Moscow in 1915 and was associated with the ideas and practices originating with Gurdjieff from then on. He taught ideas and methods based in the Gurdjieff system for 25 years in England. Gurdjieff proposed that there are three ways of self-development generally known in esoteric circles. These are the Way of the Fakir dealing exclusively with the physical body the Way of the Monk dealing with the emotions and the Way of the Yogi dealing with the mind. What is common about the three ways is that they demand complete seclusion from the world. According to Gurdjieff there is a Fourth Way which does not demand its followers to abandon the world. The work of self-development takes place right in the midst of ordinary life. Gurdjieff called his system a school of the Fourth Way where a person learns to work in harmony with his physical body emotions and mind. Ouspensky picked up this idea and continued his own school along this line. He made the term "Fourth Way" and its use central to his own teaching of the ideas of Gurdjieff. He greatly focused on Fourth Way schools and their existence throughout history. Revised edition with Gurdjieff and Ouspensky Centre postcard laid in.
