Abbreviations and Bibliography. Carian Alphabet. Carian signs in coin legends. Index. This is Volume 86 of the Handbook of Oriental Studies Section One The Near and Middle East. This handbook presents a complete and updated view of our current knowledge about Carian one of the Indo-European languages spoken in ancient Anatolia. This handbook provides a complete and updated view of our current knowledge about Carian one of the Indo-European languages spoken in ancient Anatolia. The decipherment of the Carian alphabet has only recently made it possible to analyze Carian inscriptions and to classify the Carian language linguistically. The book covers all major topics of research on Carian: the direct and indirect sources with an edition of the Carian inscriptions following a new classification system the history of the decipherment the Carian alphabet and the phonological morphological lexical and syntactic features of the language. It includes an annotated Carian glossary. The volume concludes with a special appendix on Carian coins and legends by Koray Konuk that will be of particular interest to specialists in ancient numismatics. The field of Anatolian languages is one of the liveliest branches of Comparative Indo-European Linguistics and needless to say one of the most important. Nowadays it is fairly rare to discover a new Indo-European language but this is exactly what happened in the eighties and early nineties when after some hundred years of vain research since the pioneering paper of Archibald Henry Sayce. Three scholars John D. Ray Diether Schürr and Ignacio J. Adiego managed to decipher the Carian script and to recognize Carian language as an Anatolian Indo-European language. Though our knowledge about Carian has remained and still remains very limited - on the one hand because of brevity of most of the inscriptions and on the other hand because of the impenetrable texts of the longer ones - the results of the last one and a half decade have reached the point when Carian research grew out of its infancy. Thus it seemed appropriate to summarize our knowledge of this language in a handbook available for a wider audience and for the purposes of scientific education too. This volume written by I. J. Adiego one of the decipherers who publishes extensively on Carian intends to fill this purpose. Brill hardcover

As part of Operation Buster 6500 troops were involved in the Operation Desert Rock I II and III exercises in conjunction with the tests. The two aircraft allotted to this project were flown to Yucca Lake landing strip and then moved overland to the test location. For Dog Shot the fighter F-47 was positioned with tail toward the blast at a ground range of 4250 feet from the target ground zero. The bomber B-17 was located with the left side toward the blast at a ground range of 6510 feed from the target ground zero. Damage to the fighter from Dog Shot was confined primarily to the control surfaces whereas damage to the bomber included a severs fuselage buckle aft of the wing burning of the rudder fabric and extensive local skin damage. The aircraft were relocated for Easy Shot. The fighter was postitioned with the tail toward the blast at a ground range of 2675 feet. The bomber was placed with the nose toward ground zero at a range of 5847 feet. The fighter was severely damaged one wing failing completely. Name in ink on fep not of author. New Introduction by Lloyd G. Stevenson M.D. a preeminent medical historian. Charles Caldwell May 14 1772 - July 9 1853 Louisville Kentucky was a noted 19th-century U.S. physician who is best known for starting what would become the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Charles Caldwell was born on May 14 1772. Caldwell earned an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1796 while studying under Benjamin Rush. Caldwell practiced medicine in Philadelphia and was a lecturer at his alma mater the University of Pennsylvania. He also edited the "Port Folio" one of the day's primary medical magazines and published over 200 medical publications. A significant number of copies of Caldwell's 18th and 19th century publications including copies of the Port folio survive in the collections of the AAS. In 1819 Caldwell left Philadelphia to join the fledgling medical school at Lexington Kentucky's Transylvania University where he quickly turned the school into the region's strongest. In 1821 he convinced the Kentucky General Assembly to purchase $10000 worth of science and medical books from France many of which are still held at the university. The school dismissed him in 1837 and he then traveled with several colleagues to Louisville where they created the Louisville Medical Institute. He made the new school an instant success with its rapid growth into one of the region's best medical schools. However he was forced out in 1849 due to a personal rivalry with Lunsford Yandell. The Autobiography of Dr. Caldwell was composed during the last seven or eight years of his life. It was also revised corrected and prepared for the press by Harriot W. Warner. The book contains an introduction information about his family his experiences in Medical school the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia the Whiskey campaign in Western Pennsylvania the military campaign with Washington and Hamilton and the War of 1812. Dr. Caldwell also included a catalogue of his 215 published medical writings and translations published between 1795 and 1851. Da Capo Press hardcover

Mr. Wegner has been Curator of Ship Models at the David Taylor Model Basin Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Maryland since 1980. He began his study of designer's hull models at the Smithsonian Institution in 1968 and is a member of the American Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers the U.S. Naval Institute and the Organization of American Historians. The purpose of this study has been to utilize an interdisciplinary team to examine new evidence in order to determine the identity of the present Constellation: was it built in 1797 or 1855 Recognizing the controversy as one of the most emotionally-charged debates in recent American maritime history the team would not have exacerbated this subject had they not discovered fresh and important historical artifactual and technological evidence. Is the Constellation the oldest warship afloat in the world Or is it the last sail-only warship designed by the Navy. Responsible stewshardship for the irreplaceable ship afloat in Baltimore demands that there be a full understanding of its history. The study concludes that the frigate Constellation was built in 1796-97 and torn apart in 1853. In 1853-1855 a new sloop-of-war Constellation was designed and built and is the one preserved and displayed today. n.p. [Presumed to by U. S. Charles V 1500-1558 was a Fleming royal of the Austrian House of Habsburg and the Castillan House of Trastamara who ruled the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation from 1519 as Emperor Charles V the Spanish Empire from 1516 as King Charles I and the Low Countries from 1506 as Duke Charles II. The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and Incas and the German colonisation of Venezuela both occurred during his reign. Charles V revitalized the medieval concept of the universal monarchy of Charlemagne and travelled from city to city with no single fixed capital: overall he spent 28 years in the Habsburg Netherlands primarily Bruxelles 18 years in Spain notably Toledo and Extremadura and 9 years in Germany. "After four decades of incessant warfare with the Kingdom of France the Ottoman Empire and the Protestants Charles V abandoned his multi-national project with a series of abdications between 1554 and 1556 in favor of his son Philip II of Spain and his own brother Ferdinand of Austria. The personal union of his European and American territories spanning over nearly 4 million square kilometres 1.545000 square miles was the first collection of realms to be defined as "the empire on which the sun never sets."
