1880ref. 004555S. l. : s. n. 1880. Very good. Called acquaintance flirtation escort or invitation cards - they provided a humorous and more lighthearted alternative to the formal exchange of calling cards which was common during the ever-so-proper Victorian times. Most often passed by a gentleman to a lady as a comical way to break the ice - some of them gave ideas on how to flirt others were exchanged between actual flirting couples and then others just memorialized the idea of flirtation. - "Two Souls with but a Single Thought." S. l.: s. n. n. d. 1870s - 1880s; 1 3/4 x 3; dark-red card stock printed in black and ruled with an elaborate border; illustrated with a miniature drawing of two frogs walking hand-in-hand; a bit of fading and residue to verso removed from a scrapbook; in about very good condition. The text read: "May I be permitted the blissful pleasure of escorting you home this evening Yours _______" - "There Never Was a Goose." S. l.: s. n. n. d. 1870s - 1880s;1 3/4 x 3; off-white card stock ruled with an elaborate border and illustrated with a woodcut of a couple where the man is lovingly holding the woman's face in his hands; mild age-toning and a few minor spots - in very good condition. The card hinting that there was a soulmate for everyone out there read: "There never was a goose so gray. But some day soon or late an honest gander came that way and took her for his mate." s. n. unknown books
1976ref. 004551S. l.: s. n. 1976. Very good. Original monochrome ink-and-watercolor drawing n. d. ca 1976; 11 1/2 x 9; a few tiny nicks to edges and faint crease lines; small residue spots to verso previously affixed to a scrapbook or frame; overall in very good condition. A satirical exaggerated mixed-media sketch - blending portraiture with manuscript philosophical musings and stream-of-consciosness text - it was titled "Pope Paul VI Masterbates sic" and was most probably created around the time the 1976 Vatican Sexual Ethics Decree was issued. In January 1976 Pope Paul VI had come out with Persona Humana Declaration on Certain Questions Concerning Sexual Ethics with which document he stricktly reaffirmed the Catholic Church's condemnation of masturbation premarital sex and homosexuality. The current work employed shock value and crude juxtaposition to challenge its institutional morality. s. n. unknown books

The village and its Chapelle de Notre Dame constructed in 1479 is today a UNESCO heritage site as part of the St. James' Way pilgrimage route. The site first gained popularity as a pilgrim destination during the Middle Ages but by the early 19th century was in ruins first with the arrival of the Huguenots in the 16th century and pillaged again during the French Revolution. Not until the mid-19th century were funds raised by the bishops of Cahors used to restore the site. This guidebook would have been produced shortly after the restoration and provides handsomely illustrated descriptions of the village the numerous Chapelles and surviving relics. Preface dated 1862; attributed to the abbé Cheval by the BNF. Victor Bertuot unknown books

1822ref. 013470anonymously hand-printed and illustrated 1822. Hardcover. Near Fine. Replicas of the first 58 volumes of Curtis Botanical Magazine rendered in hand-colored floral illustrations and holographic text edited from and amended to the original text by an anonymous English artistic hobbyist and rebound likely early 20thC in 24 volumes. William Curtis' first volume was published in 1787; Curtis's volume 59 the last in this hobbyist's project is dated 1832 which coincides when the hobbyist concluded his or her work. The magazine continues still under the auspices of Kew Gardens. The hobbyist here started this ambitious undertaking in 1822 which is known from the notation "Commenced 1822" he or she leaves on the title page of the first volume. The ten-year project concluded sometime in 1832 which the last entry is dated. The monumental work results in replications of illustrations and text for 3024 species. The drawing and hand-coloring aspires to the original works of James Sowerby the first of Curtis's artists. The hobbyist here sometimes copies sometimes adapts Sowerby's style; the result though technically primitive in execution is consistently charming. The amateur's colors are not as vibrant as Sowerby's; supplies of high-quality natural pigments would have been limited to the amateurist. Bound-in after Curtis' Volume 42 is the actual published Part 1 of "General Indexes to the Plants contained in the First Forty-Two Volumed of the Botanical Magazine" printed by Stephen Couchman and published by Sherwood Neely & Jones 1816 40 pp and Part II 1817 pp 41 - 111. Most impressive is the hobbyist's holographed index to all Curtis's 53 volumes which runs approximately 200 double-sided pages. These 58 volumes were collected into 24 bound volumes presumably organized by the hobbyist thusly and were professionally rebound in polished black half leather - with five raised bandstitles and devices in gilt to the spine over green/salmon/ black marbleized boards with marbleized edges - by appearances sometime in the first quarter of the 20thC by an anonymous binder. The bindings are of highest quality. Laid-in to Volume 1 is the original bill of sale for the work from Henry A. Martin print dealer and publisher of Washington DC dated 11/24/1916. The original bindings were likely calf which with age would have called for some kind of rebinding here handsomely executed. anonymously hand-printed and illustrated hardcover books
