1900ref. BK0100New York: Franz Huld and Arthur Livingston 1900. Three illustrated private mailing cards approximately 3 ¼ x 5 ½ inches each with manuscript messages and Hoboken postmarks dated August 23 1900 addressed to J. H. McNally of Lowell Massachusetts. Minor handling wear and soiling very good. Three postcards depicting the destruction caused by the June 30 1900 North German Lloyd pier fire at Hoboken mailed from the city less than two months later by a man signing himself "Jim" to his brother in Lowell. Two are Franz Huld cards nos. 31 and 32 showing the North German Lloyd docks the day after the fire and the burning S.S. Saale; the third published by Arthur Livingston shows the ruins at the entrance to the company's docks. The sender adds brief observations from Hoboken to the printed disaster views. On the view of the ruined docks he writes "The fire is still smoking." Of the Saale: "This boat is still here they are repairing her." The third explains the group: "I saw these cards today and I thought you would like them. Everything is O.K." The fire swept through the North German Lloyd piers and several vessels in the harbor killing more than 300 people. Postcard historian George Miller has described it as "the first major disaster recorded on postcards" noting at least sixteen American postcard issues and an exceptionally rapid response by publishers; the earliest known copyright was registered only five days after the fire.1 The present cards were mailed while its physical aftermath remained visible on the Hoboken waterfront. 1 George Miller "The first major disaster recorded on postcards" Postcard History October 25 2021 https://postcardhistory.net/2021/10/the-first-major-disaster-recorded-on-postcards-the-hoboken-pier-fire-june-30-1900/. . He founded the periodicals "New Writing" and "The London Magazine" and the publishing house of John Lehmann Limited. Born in Bourne End Buckinghamshire the fourth child of journalist Rudolph Lehmann and brother of Helen Lehmann novelist Rosamond Lehmann and actress Beatrix Lehmann he was educated at Eton and read English at Trinity College Cambridge. He considered his time at both as "lost years". At Trinity Lehmann had a passionate relationship with Virginia Woolf's nephew Quentin Bell. After a period as a journalist in Vienna he returned to England to found the popular periodical New Writing 193640 in book format. This literary magazine sought to break down social barriers and published works by working-class authors as well as educated middle-class writers and poets. It proved a great influence on literature of the period and an outlet for writers such as Christopher Isherwood W. H. Auden Edward Upward and miner-author B. L. Coombes. Lehmann included many of these authors in his anthology Poems for Spain which he edited with Stephen Spender. With the onset of the Second World War and paper rationing New Writing's future was uncertain and so Lehmann wrote New Writing in Europe for Pelican Books one of the first critical summaries of the writers of the 1930s in which he championed the authors who had been the stars of New WritingAuden and Spenderand also his close friend Tom Wintringham and Wintringham's ally the emerging George Orwell. Wintringham reintroduced Lehmann to Allen Lane of Penguin Books who secured paper for The Penguin New Writing a monthly book-magazine this time in paperback. The first issue featured Orwell's essay "Shooting an Elephant". Occasional hardback editions combined with the magazine Daylight appeared sporadically but it was as Penguin New Writing that the magazine survived until 1950. He joined Leonard and Virginia Woolf as managing director of Hogarth Press between 1938 and 1946. He then established his own publishing company John Lehmann Limited with his novelist sister Rosamond Lehmann who had a nine-year affair with one of Lehmann's contributing poets Cecil Day-Lewis. They published new works by authors such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Nikos Kazantzakis and discovered talents like Thom Gunn and Laurie Lee. Lehmann edited two anthologies of new writing entitled Orpheus: A Symposium of the Arts 194849. He also published the first two books by the cookery writer Elizabeth David A Book of Mediterranean Food and French Country Cooking. He published two of Denton Welch's posthumous works: A Voice Through a Cloud for which he supplied the title 1950 and A Last Sheaf 1951. This publishing house published several book series including the Chiltern Library the Holiday Library the Modern European Library and the Library of Art and Travel. It operated from 19461953. In 1954 he founded The London Magazine remaining as editor until 1961 following which he was a frequent lecturer and completed his three-volume autobiography Whispering Gallery 1955 I Am My Brother 1960 and The Ample Proposition 1966. In The Purely Pagan Sense 1976 is an autobiographical record of his homosexual life in England and pre-war Germany discreetly written in the form of a novel. He also wrote the biographies Edith Sitwell 1952 Virginia Woolf and her World 1975 Thrown to the Woolfs 1978 Rupert Brooke 1980 and Christopher Isherwood. A Personal Memoir 1987. His book Three Literary Friendships 1983 deals with the relationships between Lord Byron and Percy Shelley Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine Robert Frost and Edward Thomas. In 1965 he published Christ the Hunter a spiritual/autobiographical prose poem which had been broadcast in 1964 on the BBC Third Programme. In 1974 Lehmann published a book of poems The Reader at Night hand-printed on handmade paper and hand-bound in an edition of 250 signed copies Toronto Basilike 1974. An essay by Paul Davies about the creation of this book is included in Professor A.T. Tolley's collection John Lehmann: A Tribute Ottawa; Carleton University Press 1987 which also includes pieces by Roy Fuller Thom Gunn Charles Osborne Christopher Levenson Jeremy Reed George Woodcock and others. ref. 69558Very Good. Light edge wear. Some with correspondence on the reverse. A couple postcards with areas of abrasion to the reverse. Two with minor markings on the front. The collection as a whole uses deltiology to explore the first half of the 20th century through a unique cultural eye. Postcards although that name was not established first began circulation during the era of the Civil War when the United States government transitioned from the stampless covers type of mail to letters enclosed in envelopes with revenue stamps sold to mail them. Thus plain penny postcards were created. Yet it wasn't until the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 that the modern "picture" postcard was introduced. Largely called private mailing cards or other names these illustrated postcards grew in popularity during 1893-1906. The pioneer era postcards had black and white and later colorful images on one side and on the verso the name and address of the recipient. No message or other writing was allowed on the back. This explains the cramped handwriting on the fronts of cards. In 1906 the US Congress passed a law allowing part of the back of the postcard to include a message with the right side still reserved for the name and address. This created an explosion in popularity of picture postcards postcard collecting groups and pen pals springing up around the world. Subsequently the name postal card post-card or post card started the modern era of pictorial correspondence and only a penny to mail. The collection includes printed postcards real photo postcards sepia tones undivided backs divided backs full bleed borders white borders lines and chromes and largely encompasses the full range and style of printing processes used for modern postcards from approximately 1900-1950. It is arranged by subject and constitutes 47 cards. The collection includes women reading books men reading books and advertisements promoting books and magazines. ref. 218559Japan. Twenty one postcards 5 in colour the rest black and white photographic images. Some occasional spotting and browning light wear edges and one creased in places. Presented in a slightly chipped black lacquer box. Overall the collection is in fair to good condition. An interesting miscellaneous collection of twenty one Japanese postcards in a black lacquer box mostly dating from the 1910s and 1920s. Fourteen of these show scenes from a large Japanese military training exercise held in November 1919. Each card has a commemorative stamp of the Army Training Exercise and its date November 1919. There is also a card featuring a painting of the OSK line ship "Amerika Maru" and another with a picturesque Japanese scene and an inset photo of the OSK ship "Konan Maru" possibly a souvenir card given to passengers on the ship. Two other cards are New Year's greeting cards one of them dated 1939 and rather curiously written in Russian although it appears to have been sent from one Japanese man to another. Perhaps the most interesting in the collection is a postcard from Crown Prince Hirohito's 1921 visit to England which shows the Crown Prince shaking hands with one of Lloyd George's grandchildren although the scene is completely stolen by another small grand-daughter who stands in the middle of the photograph completely ignoring the presence of the Crown Prince. The collection also includes a 1948 entry permit to a market run by the Osaka Fruit and Vegetable Association. . unknown
1910ref. List3897United States 1910. Nine real photo postcards most standard postcard size several postally used with divided backs. Images include families and groups gathered on porches and in yards with phonographs or gramophones lakeside and camp scenes with record players an interior scene showing a man posed beside a piano and phonograph and several portraits of men with tabletop and horn machines. Some wear silvering soiling and handling; generally very good. A group of real photo postcards documenting the domestic and social use of gramophones and phonographs in the early twentieth century. The cards date from the period in which recorded sound was moving from novelty to common household entertainment. Victor introduced the internal-horn Victrola in 1906 and by the following decade phonographs had become recognizable features of parlors porches camps and other informal leisure settings. The commercial growth of the industry was rapid: Victor's 1904 Red Seal recording of Enrico Caruso singing "Vesti la giubba" is generally described as the first million-selling record while less expensive records and machines helped bring recorded music into a broader range of American homes.1 The group shows the machines among families vacationers young men porch groups and domestic interiors centering the new technology in social gatherings during the period. 1 Marc Hogan "How Much Is Music Really Worth" Pitchfork April 16 2015 accessed July 21 2026 https://web.archive.org/web/20150501155808/https://pitchfork.com/features/articles/9628-how-much-is-music-really-worth/. . unknown
