rif. 20719No place Dublin. 12 November 1846. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Two days before the writing of this letter the London Gazette had announced 10 November 1846 that Napier then Deputy Adjutant-General in Ireland had been promoted to Lieutenant General. The letter in which he writes to his Commander in Chief in Ireland is headed 'Private'. It begins: 'My Dear Sir Edward As I grieve to think that our Official intercourse is of necessity about to terminate I hope you will allow me to take this mode of returning you my warmest thanks for all the kindness I have experienced from you since I came to the Royal Hospital'. Both men had been severely injured during the Peninsular War – Blakeney in 1811 and 1812 and Napier in 1813 – and presumably had met at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. He can 'with truth and sincerity say that the period I have served with you here has been by far the happiest during the whole of my Military Career'. He states: 'I quit my present position on Promotion' but feels certain that Blakeney approves of the manner in which he has conducted the duties of his department. He has 'no right to expect' that he will 'be employed at once upon the Staff' but adds: 'I trust my time may come & when it does I sincerely hope it may be under your Command & the more immediate the better I should like it'. From the papers of Colonel Edmund Alexander Grubbe 1857-c.1923 who describes the march in his journal. No item printed by the Blooming Press of Mooltan traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The name of the press may be a joke 'blooming' being slang for 'bloody' as in Kipling's 'When 'Omer smote 'is bloomin' lyre'. 'Blooming Press Mooltan'. rif. 11555Letter 'dated Cape Town May 10th 1797' on paper also with watermarked date '1797'. 2pp. 4to. Good on lightly-aged laid paper. Bower begins by stating that he is sending 'a Copy of a Letter which I have received from Dr Carm Smyth James Carmichael Smyth 1742-1821 of the Middlesex Hospital'. Smyth's son the future Sir James Carmichael-Smyth is 'a very fine handsome young man Lieut in the Engineers come out a Passanger sic in the same ship with us'. Bower and Smyth 'wisely went into the Boat which was lashed to the Stern Gallery to fish sharks which were following the ship - the Boat suddenly canted round in the slings upon which poor Smyth went plump into the sea'. Bower 'happened to catch hold of the Boat & by the dictate of instinct & fear together scrambled up again & got into the Stern Gallery'. The slings being 'foul' an attempt to lower the boat failed and 'poor Smyth was nearly exhausted when I jumpt from the great Cabin window & kept him up till we were both Pickt up'. Bower continues: 'I will thank you to tell his Dad that I think myself well rewarded for my Ducking by the satisfaction I derive from his Letter'. Dr Smyth has sent Bower 'a very fine field Glass' and Bower asks his father to 'tell Sandy to call on Dr Smyth if he goes to London he is a man of considerable eminence in his profession'. The doctor has 'exerted himself on my account for my promotion in the Army' and 'if he can serve either Graham or Sandy' Bower will think himself 'Greatly overpaid'. The Gentleman's Magazine of February 1800 pp.181-182 gives an unusually long entry on Captain Bower's death at 'the isle of Perrim on the Red Sea' praising his character and accomplishments. Letter 'dated Cape Town May 10th 1797', on paper also with watermarked date '1797'. unknown

1928rif. 003636London: Country Life Ltd 1928. First Limited Edition. Full Pictorial Pigskin. Near Fine. No. 65 of 150 Edition de Luxe limitation signed by author and the illustrator using his pseudonym. 4to. 11.5 by 9.5 inches 29 by 24 cm. 240 6 pp. The illustrations through the body of the work are sprightly colorful fun and perfect exemplars of a twenties to thirties highball sophisticated aesthetic -- a sporting extension of the sleek look associated with thirties screwball comedies and musicals! The book makes riding and all its mishaps seem like one endless lark a party in which nothing really bad could possibly intrude. This is the kind of work that everyone will have a favorite image but few can not but admire the frontis of horses' heads awash with a gilt border. Much of the illustration by the way appears as if it were applied directly by hand and this slapdash manuscript quality greatly adds to the charm of the production. The pigskin binding has a film of soiling but remains attractive especially with its inked title and inkwell and feather quill pen imagery. With also a letter from the publisher. rif. 14891A fine pair of plates engraved by Robert Havell and son printed by Edward Egerton-Williams in colours and finished by hand each in very good condition "The Town of Sydney" with a slightly greyer paper tone. From an edition limited to 110 copies printed from the original printing plates in 1988 employing the same techniques as used in 1823. This fine edition was published as a collaborative effort between the State Library of New South Wales and the renowned fine art publishers Alecto Editions. "By 1820 Sydney was a town of 12000 inhabitants about a third of whom were convicts. It had grown dramatically during the administration of Lachlan Macquarie who was appointed governor of New South Wales in 1810. Unlike previous governors Macquarie was not content merely to oversee a penal colony. His vigorous building programme changed forever the appearance of Sydney while his policy of accepting emancipated convicts as respected citizens demonstrated a social attitude strangely out of step with the times. Both these policies earned him criticism. In 1819 alarmed by Macquarie's extravagant public works the British Government commissioned a lawyer and civil servant J.T.Bigge to investigate. The attacks by his critics were met head on by Macquarrie's supporters in New South Wales. Books pamphlets and paintings lauded the governor's undoubted achievements. Almost certainly Major Taylor's drawings were used in if not commissioned for this cause. The engraved views of the Panorama present a flattering image of the Australian seat of government and by extension of Macquarie's term there.Taylor arranged the engraving and printing of the of the three sheet Panorama. upon his return to England in July 1822.Havell appears to have worked from Taylor's. large watercolours but amended them with additional details. and decorative elements. It is most fortuitous that the copper plates.have survived. There is no other example of such a case for 19th century Australian engravings. unknown
