2012New English Original cloth bdg. In publisher's special box. Oblong large 4to. (47 x 34 cm). In English. 196 p., 95 color plts, 37 ills. A unique complex of archaeological material survives from Commagene in the first century BC. It derives from a local king, Antiochos I, and is of great interest in itself and for the study of ancient religion and art. The material consists of a large body of monumental sculpture, statues and reliefs and voluminous inscriptions about the king and his gods. The monuments are unique in their quantity, and in being precisely dated and identified. Together the texts and images provide an unrivalled opportunity for getting close to the quality and texture of an ancient cult. Antiochos I of Commagene (c. 69-36 BC) belonged at the tail-end of Hellenistic monarchy and the beginning of Roman rule in Syria and Eastern Anatolia. The scholarly text by R.R.R. Smith describes the geography and political history of Antiochos kingdom, and looks at the archaeology of his sanctuaries and his royal cult as known from inscriptions. Exquisite photography by Ahmet Ertug concentrates on some of the best preserved sculpture from two sites, Nemrud Dag and Arsameia and expresses in a new way the distinctive character and impact of these extraordinary monuments. Roman mosaics from Zeugma on the Euphrates are also included in the book. The large picture mosaics discovered in the Zeugma houses during the rescue excavations of the 1990s are sensational. They continue the tradition of Hellenistic mosaic floors with pictorial scenes of mythology, allegory, and marine fantasy, and constitute a missing link in the second century AD between picture mosaics of the later Hellenistic period and of Late Antiquity. The photography of Ahmet Ertug in this beautifully printed book will bring readers into a spectacular and less familiar landscape of the ancient world, one that felt itself already in Antiquity to be perched at the bridgehead between West and East. The photographs in the book were printed with special inks, and all color-separation and proofing was done at the digital darkroom of Ahmet Ertug. The book is 34 x 47cms in landscape format, and has 196 pages, 95 color plates and 37 figures. Printed in Germany, hardbound in Switzerland with exquisite cloth, presented in slipcase.

Captured throughout a five years working process, the Istanbul artist Efe Isildaksoy photographed numerous ancient sites and monuments across Turkey in a unique three-dimensional photo technique. A collection of his photographs is now self-published and offers a stunning visual exploration of the rich Anatolian cultural heritage. Reflecting attributes of Lycian, Classical, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman settlements. The 3D photo book Heritage of Anatolia provides a new perspective on the greatest places of antiquity: the thousands of years old remains and the historical importance of past civilizations in this region are visualized in exceptional three-dimensional photographs, among them famous international tourist attractions and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Ephesus, Pergamon, Troy, Cappadocia, and Mount Nemrut. Located foremost in the context of Lycian, Classical, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras, the archaeological finds at the photographed sites are dated back to a time scale ranging from approx. 7th Millennium BC to 5th century AD. Based on a selection of 56 remarkable archaeological complexes, the book contains 128 full-page color prints, a map and an index of the sites. More than 1300 additional 3D photos on DVD and a set of two 3D glasses are attached inside the book to guarantee full reading enjoyment. Focusing exclusively on the visual exploration of these outstanding ruins and archeological excavations, the three-dimensional photographs allow a wealth of detail not often found in other sources. The remains of monumental temples, colossal theatres, extensive city walls and fortifications, public houses and baths, tombs and sarcophagi, elaborate sculptures, ornamentations and inscriptions can be perceived in an exceptional vivid way. The 3D photographs generate a spatial depth that practically draws the viewer into the atmosphere of past times, and instantly captures the reader's fascination. Presented in such an impressive way, the visualized information can be studied with greater accuracy and leaves a thrilling impact on the viewer's comprehension. 2009Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (43 x 31 cm). In English. 212 p. Color photos. The ancient city of Aphrodisias, which was the most renowned centre of sculpture for 600 years, had fallen into oblivion until being rediscovered and brought to public attention through photographs taken by the esteemed photographer Ara Guler. This event is without doubt foremost among Guler's countless contributions to awareness of Turkey throughout the world. In 1958 Ara Güler travelled to the town of Karacasu in Aydin province to photograph the Kemer Dam, and stumbled across Aphrodisias by accident after losing his way on the return journey from the dam. Photographs that he took during that first and several subsequent visits to Aphrodisias were published in many Turkish and foreign newspapers, periodicals and books, but until now have never been gathered together in a single publication. Call of Aphrodisias presents a large selection of these photographs. In publishing this collection of Ara Guler's photographs we wish to honour the memory of Prof. Kenan T. Erim, who from 1961 until his death in 1990 devoted himself to Aphrodisias to such a degree that his name came to be identified with the city; and Sevgi Gonul, who initiated the founding of the Geyre Foundation in 1987, but whose unexpected death in 2003 prevented her seeing the Sebasteion Sevgi Gonul Hall, one of the concrete results of her work on behalf of this spectacular ancient city.
