1850Very Good French Original color copper engraving. Oblong folio. (26 x 36 cm). Description in French. Incendie du quartier de Pera a Constantinople, 9 Aôut 1839. Painted by Theodore Gudin, (1802-1880); Engraved by Joseph John Skelton, (1783-1871). Rare color engraved print. Shows 1839 fire in Pera area in Istanbul (probably that district is Kasimpasa which mostly mariners live in), and its chaos: hectic people have appeared on the roofs of the burning houses, law enforcement agencies are working, and the muezzin has been seen on balcony for 'selâ'. Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin was a French painter of the 19th century, born in Paris. He especially painted navy scenes, and was a pupil of Girodet-Trioson. Gudin was one of the first Peintres de la Marine, at the court of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. Gudin died at Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1880. His daughter Henriette Gudin also became a marine painter. Skelton was an English engraver. He was brother of William Skelton, and became an engraver specialising in topographical and antiquarian subjects. Before 1819 he went to live at Oxford. Later Skelton settled in France. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1825; his name disappears from its lists in 1844. At Oxford he published Oxonia Antiqua Illustrata (1823); Antiquities of Oxfordshire, from drawings by F. Mackenzie (1823); Pietas Oxoniensis, or Records of Oxford Founders (1828); and Engraved Illustrations of Antient Arms and Armour from the Collection at Goodrich Court from the Drawings, and with the Descriptions of Dr. Meyrick, (2 volumes, 1830). He also engraved the heading to the Oxford almanacks for the years 1815 to 1831, from drawings by F. Mackenzie and C. Wild; and executed a set of fifty-six etchings of the antiquities of Bristol after H. O'Neill. (Source: Wikipedia).

Edited by: Monella Ada Sarfarti., Önder Küçükerman, Kenan Mortan. Trade is a sine qua non to sustainable human life, together with money, script and law. Throughout History, trading zones have shaped the development of urban lanscapes. Anatolia was the craddle of trade and for thousands of years it was the scene of the development of commerce, industry and innovation. The Grand Bazaar of Istanbul is a formidable center of trade dating back 500 years, and probably the most complex and complete structure inherited from the Ottoman Empire.

2013New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In Turkish. Stories from the Hidden Harbor: Shipwrecks of Yenikapi. Color and b/w ills. 219 p. "In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. A publication by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Koç Foundation, Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations and Koç University Press".

Una koleksyon de konsejas i fotografias. Jewish Constantinople portrays Jewish life during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the modern Republic of Turkey. It spans the two generations prior to the one depicted in Jewish Istanbul. The semi-biographical vignettes feature the Kohen, Benshoam, Levi and Romano family ancestors. The book includes photographs from the Kohen family archives. These were the last generations to grow up speaking Judeo-Spanish. They strove to preserve their native tongue until the changes brought by the two World Wars overwhelmed their efforts. Through the passionate retelling of the previous generation's stories and the use of colorful Judeo-Spanish proverbs, they sought to preserve not only the language but the cultural history it embodied. Deniz hamamindan plaja nostalji. [Exhibition catalogue]. Istanbul's Seaside Leisure: Nostalgia from Sea Baths to Beaches analyzes Istanbulites' relation with the sea and swimming from a cultural and sociological perspective. It scrutinizes the transformations of this relation, which started with the sea baths in the second half of the 19th century and continued till the mid-20th century. Having brought together photographs, published material, ephemera, videos and music from varying private and institutional collections, prominently from Suna and Inan Kiraç Photography Collection, the exhibition illustrates how a waterside city like Istanbul had to make do with "sea baths" that were enclosed with wooden panels, despite the effect of Westernization. It is a documentary testament of the radical transformations in the Republic's lifestyle, socialization of the norms of howIstanbulites used their free time, and the notion of sea, which once only evoked the ideas of trade, travel and scenery. The exhibition catalogue presents three articles, which approaches the relation of Istanbul with the sea between the second half of the 19th century and the mid-20th century from varying perspectives. The curator of the exhibition Zafer Toprak's article on the social transformation in relation with the Istanbulites' intimacy with the sea is accompanied by Gökhan Akçura's work on sea and entertainment culture, and Meltem Ö. Gürel's study in which she reads the architectural interventions in regard to people's relation with the sea.
