Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium. Gathered from the joining of disciplines archaeology, art history, and the history of architecture and landscapean exceptional array of examples is presented, including architectural elements and decoration, sculpture and statuary, space and buildings, and textiles and other objects. Most significantly, this ground-breaking work reveals how objects, materials, and spaces attained new meanings in their afterlives through various modes of reuse. The scholarly contributions published here stem from the Tenth International ANAMED Annual Symposium "Spolia Reincarnated: Second Life of Spaces, Materials, Objects in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Ottoman Period" held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2015. Everyday life in Istanbul: Social historical essays on people, culture and spatial relations. Second Edition. On the map of human existence. Istanbul throughout the age of empire represented the administrative power center. Rome, Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire each took its place in history as a ring of civilization that formed around this center. To view history from this perspective means to read the story of humanity in its pages and, in a sense, to rediscover each time this dazzling star that shone in the skies of Anatolia, the Balkans and the Mediterranean. As mankind discovered Istanbul, it also discovered itself as a passionate traveler on the road leading back to its own past. Istanbul today is a treasurehouse where all our lost values are carefully preserved. A compass for our social identity that has lost its way, a touchstonefor our decaying aesthetic taste, a trustworthy scale for our degenerating sense of justice - Istanbul can assume all these roles while at the same time generously offering us a human experience and store of knowledge capable of answering every question put to it. Everyday Life in Istanbul is a collection of striking images along a journey back to the roots of the Turks' social identity. A work embracing the history of an imperial city in a plane where Man, Culture and Space relate to each other, it is a noteworthy example of the new historiography, which sets up a balance among the social sciences. With its unique style and its theoretical framework set against a multidimensional background extending from politics to culture, from architecture to literature, it is at the same time a contemporary historian's gift to our city.

Since time immemorial, the Princes' Islands have had a special place among the other districts of Istanbul. During the Byzantium Era, there were tiny fishing villages along the shores. An indication of the Islands' significance during that period was the number of monasteries where exiles were sent, including emperors, commandants and senior religious leaders whose eyes were blinded with a brand when they lost their authority. In the Ottoman Era, the Islands were no longer used for these purposes and life continued in the fishing villages and monasteries. Today, the best known architectural examples from the past are monasteries and churches. Unfortunately, only a few traces of these buildings stil remain to this day. Although the establishment of the Naval Academy (Mekteb-i Fünûn-i Bahriye-i Sâhâne) on Heybeliada in 1828 brought what is considered the first examples of housing to the.

Salih Ozbaran focuses on a subject which has not been studied fully and accurately so far, i.e., the Ottoman expansion towards the Indian Ocean including the imperial conquests, organizations, exploitation of southern Arab lands and coastal African ports. He also examines the confrontations with native rulers, their communal organizations and the Portuguese seaborne forces in the 16th century. Ozbaran comes to the following should not be regarded as a 'linear process of development'; they did not practice the fief (timar) system in the southern provinces, but the method of tax-farming (iltizam) was developed in which yearly and quarterly paid officals and soldiers played an important role. He also empasizes that the Ottomans were not fully organized in keeping the permanent seamen and naval organizations in the provinces facing the Indian Ocean although they had strongholds in towns and in country firtresses with support of firearms.

Üsküdar in engravings.= Gravürlerde Üsküdar. "Most of Western voyagers and artists produced their engravings in Istanbul. Between Istanbul engravings those of Üsküdar have a special place. Üsküdar was the break point for tthe Eastern voyagers going to the west and westerns voyagers going to Jerusalem or Asia. It was a place to see its own beauties witth the possibility to see the other side also and it became a zone for the engraving masters. We prepared a very beautiful exhibition following this art and history. During five hundred years since the beginning of the engraving until our days, we prepared some documents of engraving which brought to us the daily life of Üsküdar in ancient times and we collected them by the title of Üsküdar.
