In October 1857, two young brothers .were ushered into the drawing room of Christopher Rhinelander Robert, noted New York merchant and philanthropist. They requested Robert to help finance the opening of an institution of higher learning in Istanbul." So begins the story of teh founding of Robert College, the first American institution of higher education abroad, and predecessor of Bogaziçi University, nearly one and a half centuries ago. It is first and foremost the story of the character and aspirations of Cyrus Hamlin, the driving force behind the establishment of the school, and of the complex relationship between him and the other two individuals who made the realization of this educational project possible, Christopher Robert and George Washburn. This in itself is a fascinating and compelling tale, one that will hold the attention not only of those interested in the institution itself but of a much wider readership.

Throughout History, trading zones have shaped the development of urban lanscapes. Anatolia was the craddle of trade and for thousands of years it was the scene of the development of commerce, industry and innovation. The Grand Bazaar of Istanbul is a formidable center of trade dating back 500 years, and probably the most complex and complete structure inherited from the Ottoman Empire.

It is generally recognized that Greek painters from Istanbul contributed to a great extent to Ottoman and Turkish culture, beginning during the Byzantine era. Even after the end of the Byzantine era, however, Greek artists continued to play an active role in the development of art in Istanbul. Undeniably, one of the results of the Greeks having had to leave Turkey for political reasons has been the removal of an important treasure of art and culture from Istanbul. The beauty and splendor of Istanbul and the recurrent themes of migration and longing, are characteristic of the works of numerous Greek artists who left Istanbul at an early age and who developed or continued their artistic work in Greece or in various European countries. This book contains the biographies and more than five hundred works of nearly two hundred Greek artists of Istanbul.

2002New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). 334 p. In English. This is a book Istanbul and about those who conducted political and espionage missions there during the Second World War. It is a work of nonfiction based on extensive archival research and interviews. Each event and every conversation is reconstructed as accurately as possible. Whenever I interviewed those involved, four decades after the events herein described, there always came a moment when these Americans, Austrians, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Israelis, Russians, and Turks would light up in recalling those remarkable days that had forever marked their Jives. To some, these were moments of great achievement and romance; to others, searing tragedy. For all of them, it was an era of great perils and passionate idealism when they hoped their actions would shape a new world.
2012New English Paperback. Oblong large 8vo. (20 x 20 cm). In English. 112 p. Ills. Together, Süleymaniye (1550-1557) and Sultanahmet (1609-1616, better known today as the Blue Mosque) are an awe-inspiring testament to the power of faith and the splendour of the Ottoman Empire. These two mosques, bearing the names and housing the mausoleums of the Sultans who built them - Süleyman and Ahmed I - are supreme examples of Ottoman architecture, each richly adorned with stone carving, tiling and calligraphy. Each was built with an adjacent complex (külliye) which contained the finest schools of the time, as well as hospitals, shops, soup kitchens and public baths. This book is a richly illustrated guide to Süleymaniye and Sultanahmet. It includes an in-depth study of the architecture, situating the mosques within the wider context of the Ottoman political and artistic milieu of their time, and examining the religious, social and educational activity that revolved around each complex.
