2009New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 593 p. "During the 38 years of its existence Bosphorus University has perpetuated the cultural traditions it inherited from Robert College, and it is generally considered to be one of the top undergraduate institutions in the world, with outstanding graduate programs in most fields other than medicine and law. Though it is a Turkish state university, the language of instruction in almost all courses is English; the majority of its faculty have doctorates from American universities and most of its outstanding students go on to do graduate studies at universities in the U. S. Our students come from every province of Turkey and from more than sixty other countries, for Bosphorus University is a cultural beacon that shines across national boundaries and internal political divisions, distinguished by the diversity of its student body and faculty and its tolerance of ethnic, religious, and cultural differences. And so my book will examine the ways in which Robert College and Bosphorus and Bosphorus University have been a bridge of culture between what orientalists have called East and West.

"Istanbul has often been said to be a city that has lived but has never been written about. Now,after losing so many things of such great cultural value, it is essential that we should at last embarkon its documentation, employing all the various methods of culutural aechaeology. In other words,we should uncover meaningful fragments of its heritage by the skilful utilisation of such an approch Most of what has been written so far on the subject of besiktas has been the work of a single writer and has rarely succeeded in rising above the amateur level.Besiktas past and present differs from previous work in being the first book to be produced by a group of specialists.Certainly,an important role in its preparation has been performed by the encyclopedia of Istanbul Past and Present previously published by the History Foundation,But all items from this work incorporated in Besiktas Past and Present have been thoroughly revised and any necessary material added.".

2013New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In Turkish. Stories from the Hidden Harbor: Shipwrecks of Yenikapi. Color and b/w ills. 219 p. "In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums started large-scale salvage excavations at Yenikapi within the scope of Marmaray-Metro projects. For the first time in Istanbul's history, archaeological excavations were conducted at one of its Byzantine harbors. When the excavations started, it was not known what this ancient harbor at the mouth of the Lykos (Bayrampasa) River would yield. At first, Ottoman remains were encountered in the excavation area, which covers over 58,000 square meters. Then, one of Constantinople's most important, and the world's best known harbors, the Theodosian Harbor, was reached only 1 meter below sea level. During the ongoing excavations, countless small finds and works of architecture were unearthed. In addition to wood and rope fragments, an unexpected find, a shipwreck, was found in 2005. As the excavation area expanded, a total of 37 ships dating between the 5th and 11th centuries were brought to light. Among the finds are very well preserved small and large merchantmen, as well as galleys from the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, which have been found for the first time. The Yenikapi wrecks constitute the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found together. Another surprise was waiting for the archaeologists 6,3 meters below sea level: Istanbul's oldest settlement. This Neolithic settlement dates back 8000 years and changes the writing of Istanbul's history. The footprints of Istanbulites who lived there thousands of years ago were found a few meters below. As the excavations go on uninterrupted, we have now acquired much new information about the city. This exhibition has been prepared in light of the finds from Yenikapi and their scientific study. It presents a section of the city from its first inhabitants to the present, and allows a multidimensional view of trade, seafaring, shipbuilding technology, and everyday life in Constantinople through four wrecks that were found together with their cargo. A publication by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Koç Foundation, Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations and Koç University Press".

Another superb facsimile edition of a very rare book by Ertug & Kocabiyik. In 1795 the Alsace-born Antoine Ignace Melling, who had come to Constantinople to seek his fortunes, was appointed imperial architect by the Ottoman Sultan Selim III. During his tenure in that position, he also designed and landscaped a seaside palace for Selim's sister, Princess Hatice. While in Constantinople, Melling executed a number of astonishing panoramic views of the city and its environs.Melling returned to Paris in about 1803. In 1809 he set up an engraving studio for the purpose of reproducing these drawings. The completed images were published as a series of fascicles that were sent out to subscribers. The last one appeared in 1819. The Ertug & Kocabiyik facsimile edition of the complete book is produced from the original "elephant folio", an unfolded first edition in the collection of Ahmet Ertug. The technical aspects of the project were done under the supervision of Mr. Ertug in Switzerland by some of the world's leading facsimile specialists. This outstanding facsimile edition is available in two different bindings. One is bound in sturdy Japanese cloth and the other is a very limited edition of only 50 copies bound in leather that is intended for connoisseurs of exceptionally fine books. The binding and decoration of all the leather-bound copies were done by hand. The book measures 50 by 66 cms. The foldout image plates are 65 by 97 cms. There are 48 views of Constantinople in the late 18th century and also three maps. The publishers also offer an edition of the unfolded image plates presented in a leather-bound case. Only 25 copies of this version have been produced. The text for this edition is bound separately and presented in a pocket in the leather case. The descriptions of the views in the facsimile edition are in the original French and an English translation is also provided. The Ertug & Kocabiyik facsimile edition of "Voyage pittoresque" is an outstanding achievement and one that is certain to appeal to collectors of rare books and to those who admire beautiful art objects.
