Fine English Sark mektuplari., Lady Montegü [Lady Montagu], translation and annotion: Ahmet Refik [Altinay], Hilmi kitabhanesi, Ist., 1933. Paperback. Pbo. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). Fine. First Turkish edition of 'Letters of Lady Montagu'. 144 p. Montagu's Turkish letters were to prove an inspiration to later generations of European women travellers to the Orient. In particular, Montagu staked a claim to the particular authority of women's writing, due to their ability to access private homes and female-only spaces where men were not permitted. The title of her published letters refers to "Sources that Have Been Inaccessible to Other Travellers". The letters themselves frequently draw attention to the fact that they present a different (and, Montagu asserts, more accurate) description than that provided by previous (male) travellers: "You will perhaps be surpriz'd at an Account so different from what you have been entertaind with by the common Voyage-writers who are very fond of speaking of what they don't know." Montagu provides an intimate description of the women's bathhouse, in which she derides male descriptions of the bathhouse as a site for unnatural sexual practices, instead insisting that it was ¿the Women¿s coffee house, where all the news of the Town is told, Scandal invented, etc¿. However, Montagu's detailed descriptions of nude Oriental beauties provided inspiration for male artists such as Ingres, who restored the explicitly erotic content that Montagu had denied. In general, Montagu consistently derides the quality of European travel literature of the 18th century as nothing more than "trite observations.superficial.[of] boys who only remember the best wine or the prettyest women." Montagu's Turkish letters were frequently cited by imperial women travellers, more than a century after her journey. Such writers cited Montagu's assertion that women travellers could gain an intimate view of Turkish life that was not available to their male counterparts. However, they also added corrections or elaborations to her observations. Julia Pardoe, in describing her own visit to a bathhouse, wrote "I should be unjust if I did not declare that I saw none of that unnecessary and wanton exposure described by Lady Mary Montagu. Either the fair Ambassadress was present at a peculiar ceremony, or the Turkish ladies have become more delicate and fastidious in the ideas of propriety." Emmeline Lott, who wrote a book about her experience working as a governess for the son of Ishamel Pasha, claimed that Montagu's aristocratic rank meant that she had seen only the most attractive elements of Oriental life: ".her handsome train, Lady Ambassadress as she was, swept but across the splendid carpeted floors of these noble Saloons of Audience, all of which had been, as is invariably the custom, well ¿swept and garnished¿ for her reception.

2012New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 273 p. Ills. This book has been written at the request of many friends of Robert College. It embodies a history of the College from its foundation to the close of its fortieth year, 1903. I have chosen to make it a record of personal recollections, because this seemed to be the only way in which I could write freely of events and personalities as they appeared to me at the time, without compromising the present administration of the College or making it responsible in any way for my opinions or actions. It has been my purpose to make it as far as possible a history of the College, but the picture of a college in Constantinople during these years could not be drawn without a background of incidents, personalities and events, such as would have no place in the story of a college in America. On the other hand, it did not seem wise to make the background more attractive than the picture, or even to set the latter in the frame of a detailed history of the Turkish Empire. The Introduction is a review of the events of the last fifty years which have led to the recent revolution in Constantinople.

2013New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 13,5 cm). In English. 418 p. The official line that successive Turkish regimes have frequently repeated and which has firmly established itself in both Turkish and foreign public opinion is that the Republic of Turkey is one of those rare countries in which antisemitism has never taken root, and in which Jews have thus lived for centuries within a tolerant atmosphere of peace and tranquility, but it simply isn't true. Along with antisemitism are the conspiracy theories in which the "Jew" or the "Zionist" feature as the main actors that are widely seen throughout Turkish society. In fact, this state of affairs is not only pervasive but has even become "normal" to the point of banality, so much so that it tends to draw no reaction from either the country's intellectuals or politicians. This book contains a collection of author's published articles on the subject-a subject that has received no serious treatment in Turkey, and as such attempts to fill the gaping hole in our knowledge of this widespread yet rarely discussed phenomenon and, as such, stands as an indispensible source for those interested in Turkey and antisemitism.
2013New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 13,5 cm). In English. 136 p. This study focuses on the pardons of the Hamidian era by using the petitions which were written by the convicts, accused people or their relatives to the Sublime Porte. Beside the lives, prison conditions and accusations of the convicts, the pardon petitions constitute a useful source to see the nature of the relationship between state and the ordinary people. This study argues that although requesting a pardon seems to have been a kind of obedience to the authority, the relationship established on pardons was established through bargains and negotiations. The process of granting pardons was an interactive one in which the actors negotiated on the conditions according to the position of supplicant. Also, the petitions allow us to see the debated characteristics of the Hamidian era from the eyes of the ordinary people. This study claims that the pardon was a state policy and it was especially applied during the Armenian Events of the 1890s, the banditry problem and tribal conflicts. Moreover, to gain the loyalties of the outlaws, to use them as informers and collaborate with them in the critical areas of the Empire, pardons were a step in allowing the state to make alliances without losing its prestige. Through the discretionary power of forgiveness, the Sultan tried to restore the monarchical ideology, namely the merciful image of Sultanic rule, which was a distinctive element of monarchical power. While granting pardons, the Abdülhamid regime expected from the convict less loyalty or regret than certain services, and active collaboration on particular issues - a tension which constituted the dynamics of the pardon negotiations.

Exhibition catalogue on Princes' Island of the Marmara sea where Greeks (Rums) of Istanbul used to live. (.) They are insistently asking if the Island has changed too much? How was the city in my memories? They are asking about the daily life, old time people and the neighbourhood. That is to mean they are wondering about the Island in "the time of Rum people". As they ask me about the old days, I feel as if one of the last survivors of an endangered societies. It makes me feel like a remnant of something that's past. Well, certainly this is not that old Island. But, I think we are the ones disappearing. Everytime we look at the past, we are searching for our memories, childhood and youth. And all the years vanished. Those who are really missed a lot and not found are ourselves in the past. Indeed, we don't exist. That dark skinned boy running in the Kopsidas' garden at Hristos Qarter, pursuing a butterfly amid the rosebuds, playing with tin soldiers doesn't exist anymore. And he won't come back. Today's Island that I still love so much and will be keeping is not the same with the Island of my memories. The Island is still there with all its beauties.

"In 1492, the Spanish monarchs expelled tens of thousands of Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and other territories. Most Sephardim headed eastward and settled in Ottoman lands, where their language, known as Judeo-Spanish, survived and thrived for centuries. This book is the result of fieldwork in the Jewish community of Istanbul. It provides a historical and modern sociolinguistic account of the survival of the Judeo-Spanish dialect after centuries of fragmentation, French bilingualism, "Turkish only" language policies, emigration, and globalization. This work analyzes social patterns on the acquisition and use of Judeo-Spanish in the community as well as linguistic change throughout different generations of Istanbulite Sephardim. Focusing on several grammatical features, these data demonstrate that bilingualism with Turkish and reduced linguistic spaces promote language change. In a world where linguistic diversity is rapidly shrinking, the survival and future of Judeo-Spanish is a testament to the close bond between language, culture, community, and identity".
