[Exhibition catalogue]. February 24 - May 31, 2011. 500 copies were printed. Our struggle, conducted under the direction of Alm I las beginning in 1005, to see that the machines and items used in, and the documents and photographs pertaining to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory be returned to their rightful place, reached a positive conclusion in 2008, when these items were temporarily handed over to the Rezan Has Museum after being inventoried at the Museum for the History of Science and Technology in Islam. Following two years of restoration and conservation work, we held the first of a series of exhibitions about the Factory, titled "Like Moths to the Flame: The Ottoman Fire Brigades", in order to revive the spirit of the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory and to share with you t hi- important historical artifacts on their way back home. The "Like Moths to the Flame: the Ottoman Fire Brigad(-: features those indomitable heroes of the city of Istanbul, managed again and again to rise from the ashes. Heroes outfits, performers of daring acts, these brave characters fearir:ssly fought the fires that were Istanbul's greatest nightmare. Firei'vtj.i.t.(2rs, those voluntary soldiers of Istanbul, had their own unique culture, their own rally cries, attitudes, and sayings, their own characteristic relationships, and even veritable tradition of criminal incidents amongst their own, all of which provide insight into the street culture of the city of Istanbul, and the socio-cultural structure and state politics of the period. In addition to the artifacts and historical documents belonging to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory, our exhibition also contains selected items from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Libraries and Museum's Firefighting Museum Collection and the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation's Old Istanbul Photographs Collection. Numerous individuals worked together to make this exhibition happen, and to each of them we would like to express our thanks. First and foremost the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but also the Atatark Library, our team who so painstakingly worked on the restoration and conservation of the works exhibited, Prof. Dr. Baha Tanman for his contributions, Galru Tanman, who was so generous with her support, and the Istanbul Research Institute, all of you have our eternal gratitude.

This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. As the first book to be published in the Classical Works Series, Ayasofya'nin Betimi is comprised of two poems Byzantine Emperor Justinian's chamberlain and literary figure Paulos wrote for the opening festivities of Hagia Sophia in 562 CE. Holding a unique place in eulogistic literature, the poems act as a highly important source for researchers of Byzantine history and literature, as they reflect features of a festival of poems, processions, orations in prose, religious rituals, and even non-religious forms of entertainment

Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.

Koç Collection.= Osmanli Baskentinde fotografçi ve hakkak. Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu. Robertson, one of the most notable names of nineteenth-century photography, received his vocational training in the London Royal Mint and remained the chief engraver of the Ottoman Imperial Mint for forty years, serving four successive sultans including Sultan Abdülmecid and Sultan Abdülaziz. He prepared designs, molds and models for gold and silver coins and in the 1850s also started to develop an interest in photography. James Robertson is the first photographer working in Istanbul known to have taken the first 360° panoramic photographs of the city. He gained much renown with his Istanbul photographs, as well as with the photo series he produced of Athens in 1854, of the Crimean War between 1854 and 1855, and of Jerusalem and Cairo, which he prepared in 1857 and which were displayed in exhibitions in London and Paris. 'Robertson, Photographer and Engraver in the Ottoman Capital' features not only his outstanding works for the Imperial Mint, but also reveals his mastery and manifold talents as an artist capable of creating stunning photographs and watercolor paintings of his adopted city's colorful life, of its unique scenery, and its matchless monuments and art objects. The exhibition also includes numerous photos from Athens, the Crimea, Jerusalem and Cairo. An accompanying exhibition catalogue, prepared by Bahattin Öztuncay and designed by Yesim Demir, presents Robertson's biography alongside his works.

Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs. He taught them how to work with the bricks, supervised the erection of the buildings, and encouraged the revival of such ancient crafts as claustra (lattice designs in the mudwork) to adorn the buildings.
