Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.

Mesrutiyet öncesi portreler. The novelist Julien Viaud, famous for his nickname Pierre Loti, is a traveling maritime officer. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, he makes seven trips to Istanbul. In 1903, at the age of 53, Pierre Loti takes over Le Vautour, the first station ship to the French Embassy in Istanbul, during his fifth trip to Turkey. In the same period, Hasan signed cartoons start to circulate in Istanbul. The person who is hiding under Hasan is actually Robert de Guiroye, a naval officer. This person was then assigned to the auxiliary ship "La Mouette" (Seagull) under the command of Pierre Loti. It is thought that this officer made drawings on this ship in the evening after having spent a long time in important social clubs such as Cercle d'Orient, Pera Palas Ballroom, Tepebasi Theater. Who is actually Hasan / Who is the real Hasan? The answer to this problem is in the exhibition and detailed catalog. Let's see if they can help bring Hasan's identity to light. The "Pierre Loti and Hasan Silhouettes" exhibition is made up of documents obtained as a result of years of research by numerous collections and valuable collector Sayen Erol Makzume, who has vast knowledge of Hasan's lithographs in the early 20th century. The exhibition contains texts, cartoons and in-depth information, and sheds light on the transition period of Turkey after the Second Constitutional Monarchy.

2019New English Paperback. Large demy 8vo. (22 x 16 cm). In English. 320 p. The Church of Sancta Sophia Constantinople. Sancta Sophia is the most interesting building on the world's surface. Like Karnak in Egypt, or the Athenian Parthenon, it is one of the four great pinnacles of architecture, but unlike them this is no ruin, nor does it belong to a past world of constructive ideas although it precedes by seven hundred years the fourth culmination of the building art in Chartres, Amiens, or Bourges, and thus must ever stand as the supreme monument of the Christian cycle. Our first object has been to attempt some disentanglement of the history of the Church and an analysis of its design and construction; on the one hand, we have been led a step or two into the labyrinth of Constantinopolitan topography, on the other, we have thought that the great Church offers the best point of view for the observation of the Byzantine theory of building.
