2007Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (33,5 x 23 cm). In English. 295 p., color ills. Ara Güler. Vanished colours. Texts by Ara Güler, Mehmet Baydur. In Ara Güler's words: ''My first book on Istanbul was in black and white, my second book, 'Vanished Colours', is in colour. Colour photographs lack the solidity of black-and-white, and in this book I have given priority not so much to artistic considerations as to an attempt to present the city of Istanbul in its own characteristic colours. My aim is not to produce art photography, but simply to reflect Istanbul as it really is. What does Istanbul mean to me? Istanbul is Jean Giraudoux' La Folle de Chaillot. Every since my childhood I have always identified Istanbul with the madwoman of Chaillot, a crazy woman of the type you can find in the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations...''. Second Edition.

2005Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 413 p., b/w ills. Sons of the conquerors: The rise of the Turkic world. A detailed portrait of the Turkic people explores events since World War I that have rendered the nation a vital NATO ally and the site of a secular Islamic democracy, tracing centuries of citizen ancestry to offer insight into how Turkish culture has significantly impacted history. By the co-author of Turkey Unveiled. 20,000 first printing. With the end of the Soviet Union began independence for a half-dozen Turkic countries, where Istanbul-based reporter Pope has made forays for the past 15 years, traveling in both presidential airliners and faltering taxis. Pope does not organize his trips chronologically, but, rather, according to what he believes are the seven collective characteristics of Turkic peoples. One is the "military vocation" epitomized by Turkey itself, whose military is regarded as the guardian of secularism; a concomitant trait is predilection for the political strongman. None of the new Turkic states is a liberal democracy, and none less so than Turkmenistan, home to a shambolic personality cult devoted to its dictator. Pope's talks with officials are always revelatory of local and international politics, but readers will most value his perceptiveness about Turkic culture when he, speaking fluent Turkish, meets ordinary people. Some of these are Uygurs, the Turkic minority suppressed by communist China, and others are part of the Turkic diaspora in Europe and America. A sensitive presentation of how Turks view themselves and their future.
2010Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. [xxi], 354 p., 50 numerous b/w ills. A social history of Ottoman Istanbul. Using a wealth of contemporary Ottoman sources, this book recreates the social history of Istanbul, a huge, cosmopolitan metropolis and imperial capital of the Ottoman Empire. Seat of the Sultan and an opulent international emporium, Istanbul was also a city of violence shaken regularly by natural disasters and by the turmoil of sultanic politics and violent revolt. Its inhabitants, entertained by imperial festivities and cared for by the great pious foundations which touched every aspect of their lives, also amused themselves in the numerous pleasure gardens and the many public baths of the city. While the book is focused on Istanbul, it presents a broad picture of Ottoman society, how it was structured and how it developed and transformed across four centuries. As such, the book offers an exciting alternative to the more traditional histories of the Ottoman Empire. First Edition.

Wooden Istanbul: Examples from housing architecture.= Istanbuls Holzhauser: Beispiele seiner historischen Wohnarchitektur.= Ahsap Istanbul: Konut mimarisinden örnekler. ''Istanbul's real interior view,'' writes Tanpinar in describing the wooden houses of Istanbul ''was created by a colorful civil architecture ornate with oriels, bow windows and projections, eaves and awnings, velvety soft lines and decorations.'' To his observations on the perished wooden seaside palaces of the Bosphorus he adds, ''Perhaps the history of the Bosphorus fascinates us more than others, for we no longer find in place what we are looking for. .What intrigues us, in fact is none other than the void these buildings leave behind.'' Today, although it is rarely encountered in the landscape of Istanbul, wooden housing architecture continues to preserve its place in the city's image as it is enshrined in collective memory. While many have us may not have spent a portion of our lives in such houses, the memories of family members and friends and the impressions from the literature of a recent past sustain our connection to these houses. Whether we are aware or not, this heritage enthralls us with the mystique of a lost world while offering certain clues on the creation of an inescapably reconstructed Istanbul identity, which is shaped not only through architecture but also an entire way of living.
