2020New English Original bdg. HC. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). Edition in English. 342 p., color ills. Istanbul: A bird's eye view. Photos by Halit Bilen. I wanted to tell a tale of Istanbul. And Istanbul gave me the most magnificent of tales. I wanted to draw its picture - and unexpectedly, it unfolded all its colors generously, with ecstasy. It wasn't easy to describe a city so exultant, always surprising, a city that you can't get enough of exploring and that is sassy with its uniqueness. To describe it, I needed to understand it and to understand, I had to chase after my feelings. I faced 8,500 years of history, as well as the 21st century metropolis. I wrote this book to be worthy of Istanbul's name. As you get lost in the pages, you will see a journey through Istanbul from a viewpoint you haven't seen before, the richness of Istanbul with buildings that have never previously appeared in the same frame. I tell you about an Istanbul. An Istanbul that is multicultural, multicoloured, blending the old and the new, keeping differences side by side in its bosom, reconciling resentments with its beauty, amazing with its history. I held onto the wings of a seagull and wandered around my beloved city. I left room for you too. Trail behind me and watch a journey of Istanbul from another perspective. You will be surprised about how much this tale has yet to unveil.

2020New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 80 p. When looking at the distribution of infectious diseases in the world in general, it is seen that there is a distinct difference between developed and developing countries. Morbidity and mortality rates of infectious diseases decrease as the level of development increases. In other words, infectious diseases are mostly diseases of developing countries. Therefore, it is necessary to create an effective fighting program against infectious diseases. One of the most important components of effective fighting is the establishment of an effective surveillance system. Monitoring infectious diseases is essential for detecting outbreaks that demand public health response and control measures. Many methods are used for this purpose such as spatial clustering. This is defined as aggregation of disease cases anywhere. Clustering of the disease shows its relation with space. For this reason, cluster analysis is frequently used in epidemiology. It has been the main driving force to carry out the study on this relatively new issue for our country. The book is the product of this work.
2011New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 21 cm). In English. 177, [3] p., b/w photos, 2 maps. Ara Güler's Istanbul. Foreword by Orhan Pamuk. Ara Güler's Istanbul is a unique record of daily life in the cultural capital of Turkey from the 1940s to the 1980s, captured by the award-winning photographer and accompanied by an evocative foreword by Orhan Pamuk, the first Turkish recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. As the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Istanbul has lived through several empires and has a character that is as many layered as its history something that Güler's photographs convey with great sensitivity. In these remarkable black-and-white images, the city's melancholy aesthetic oscillates between tradition and modernity. Both writer and photographer were born in Istanbul, and each in his youth held the ambition of becoming a painter. Here, each in his own way paints a picture of his home town and captures its very soul. Ara Güler is one of Turkey's indeed the world's greatest photographers. The Nobel Prize-winning Orhan Pamuk is Turkey's best-known writer.
2016New Turkish Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Edition in Turkish. 228 p., color and b/w ills. Islâm medeniyetinde bahçe sanati. [= The art of the Islamic garden]. Translated by Elif Dolanbay, Adem Yerinde. The Islamic garden is regarded as one of the highest forms of visual art in the civilization of Islam, and this guide explains these gardens' history and symbolism, and their connections to the Quran. The principal elements are water and shade; they are also characterized by the chahar-bagh: a four-fold pattern, constructed around a central pool or fountain, with four streams flowing toward the four corners of the earth. This design is aesthetically striking; however, a true appreciation of an Islamic garden is only complete with an understanding of the spiritual symbolism manifested in its design and planting. The significance of the gardens' layout and design are explored, as well as the geometry, hard landscaping, and architectural elements, allowing a deeper understanding of the gardens' beauty. Practical instructions include recommendations for suitable trees, shrubs, and flowers, and advice on creating an Islamic garden in cooler climates.

1910Very Good French Original sepia-toned photograph printed in a period photograph paper. 19x25 cm. Descriptive text in French. Chipped and tear on margins. Iranian was born in 1890 in Constantinople, Istanbul. It is known that he established his studio in 1891 in Pera district of Constantinople - the center of Armenian cultural and political life. In 1895 he enters into partnership with another photographer by the name of Gugasyan. By 1900s the business seems to have wound down as the images marked with his studio signature don't exhibit any over elements of the new century. Of all the major Armenian studios from Istanbul, Iranian's photographs are the rarest, and less than 300 are known to have survived. Iranian's primary subject was the city of Constantinople, its picturesque landscape, architectural heritage, and the many types of artisans and workers that populated its streets. Using the latest photography techniques, which allowed for very rapid exposures, Iranian captured the bustle of the city streets with remarkable clarity. Teeming with life and movement these images have a remarkable immediacy and documentary veracity quite unlike similar views produced by other photographers of the period. The typical approach for many of Iranian's contemporaries such as Sebah & Joalier or Guillame Berggren was to achieve as clear a picture as possible with perfectly balanced compositions and highly visible details - the hallmark of a 'good' commercial photographer. In contrast, Iranian's street views are full of photographic 'ruptures' - blurred figures in movement, surprised glances of people caught unawares - which give his works the viscerality of snapshots. But above all, Iranian was a master at capturing the mood of a place. Catching the Ottoman capital on the brink of rapid transformation, the photographer aimed to record many of its ancient streets and quarters disappear or change the appearance. Thus, like the Parisian street photography of Atget, Iranian's images are 'nostalgic for the present' that is irrevocably slipping into the past. In his studio, the clientele had the choice of a large range of costumes and props through which the modern urbanite could slip into the role of some long-gone ethnic or street type and become a part of history. It is this sense of melancholy that gives Iranian's photographs their subtle emotional power. This is also perhaps the reason why he was ultimately not as successful as a commercial photographer. Modernity had captured the imagination of the people and the wistful romanticism of Iranian's markedly less spectacular images was fast going out of fashion. The small legacy he has left behind is nevertheless of significance in the history of Near-Easter photography. He was one of the rare Ottoman photographers with an individual and subjective approach, which deserves a proper evaluation.

This uncommon map of Spain and Portugal in Ottoman script was published in an atlas, 'Yeni cografya atlasi', which was issued in Istanbul in the late 19th century. Ali Seref Pasa or Hafix Ali Esref. He was a soldier, who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. Already in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called 'Yeni atlas'. Upon his return to Istanbul he became a chief cartographer at the Maatbaa-i amire Printing Press in Beyazit, which was the successor of the Muteferrika press from 1727. Among others he translated the large Kiepert map of Anatolia to Ottoman. He died in 1907, leaving his large project of a gigantic map of Anatolia in 100 sheets unfinished. Ali's name is often misunderstood or even listed as two different people: Ali Seref Pasa and Hafiz Ali Esref. Until the surname law adopted on June 21, 1934, Turks did not have surnames. They were born with one first name and were until the adulthood described only as sons or daughters of their parent's names. Later they were given titles such as Effendi (Sir), Bey (Chief) or Hanim (Madam) for higher classes, or they were given names according to their work or class. The names were not inherited by children until 1934, when the surname law was enforced. The map maker Ali received names Seref, the honourable, and Pasa, the dignitary. He was also known as Hafiz, the memorizer of Qur'an and Esref, Proud. So Ali Seref Pasa would have a meaning 'Honourable Dignitary Ali, and Hafiz Ali Esref, Memorizer of Qur'an, Proud Ali. Daruttibaa - Matbaa-I Amire Printing Press: The first press in the Muslim world, called Daruttibaa, was founded in Istanbul by Ibrahim Muteferrika in 1727, with a permission of Sultan Ahmeet III. It was located in Muteferrika's house. The first book was published in 1729 and until 1742 sixteen other works followed. After Muteferrika's death, the press was supressed for printing, as printed books were considered dangerous. In 1796 the press was purchased by the government and moved to Uskudar in Istanbul, and in 1831 finally to Beyazit, where it was renamed to Matbaa-i Amire in 1866. The press was closed in 1901 and was reopened in 1908 under the name 'Âmire' In 1927 the name changed to State Printing House. The press still exists and is known for publishing school and educational books. Extremely rare. Not in OCLC.; Not in TBMM Map Collection.
