1985Fine English Paperback. Small 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 54, [2] p., 53 numerous b/w plts., 46 numerous color plates. The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". 2011New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 285 p. Color and b/w ills. "This unique collection takes a fresh look at Orientalism by shifting its center from Europe to Ottoman Istanbul and thinking about art in terms of exchange, reciprocity, and comparative imperialisms. This new lens reveals the essential role of the Ottoman city and its patrons and artists in the dialogues that facilitated production, circulation, and consumption of British Orientalist cultures. In this volume, art works are conceptualized as traveling artifacts produced through localized interactions. World renowned scholars and curators analyze the diverse audiences for such art works and the range of differing contexts for their reception both in the 19th century and more recently. In this way, British art is put into a dynamic relationship with an historicized understanding of cultures of collecting and display during the formation of comparative modernities and also with the contemporary postcolonial creation of new national models of exhibition and education. Featuring stunning visuals, this book puts art history in the context of cultural, visual, and literary studies, challenging the orthodoxies of postcolonial theory with the materiality of multiple imperialisms and modernities to offer a new take on the collection, display, and consumption of Orientalist cultures.".
2000New New English Original binding with original dust wrapper. 3 volumes set in special slip case. Large 4to. (43 x 33 cm). [xi], 1182 p. in total. 2400 postcards. Born in 1852 in Kalucz, a town on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Max Fruchtermann came to Istanbul in 1867 and two years later opened a picture framing shop in the city. Having decided to have the first Ottoman Postcard Series printed at Breslau in 1895, he ensured through his cards, which number in the millions, that the name "Turkey and the multifarious images associated with it" spread throughout the entire world from Canada to New Zeland. In 1966 when Fruchtermann's daughter-in-law Anna, before closing down the establishment, sold her remaining stock (subsequently realized to number around 600,000) to a secondhand dealer for 2500 liras, she probably never imagined the importance of her father-in-law's postcards. They are not simply photographs of landscape panoramas monumental buildings and people of the time. They are individual documents that reflect in their human types and cross-sections of everyday life the noteworthy political incidents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the ethnic and cultural diversity embodied in the Ottoman identity. As such they have acquired significance far in excess of original expectations. It always comes as a pleasant surprise to collectors to see that ordinary objects left to us from the past, and usually assumed to be of mere functional value, in time acquire special significance. For us, however, far more than a pleasant surprise these postcards are a door opening up on our recent history. The places, incidents and types that Fruchtermann saw and appraised with his own eyes have been given new life and brought together as a whole thanks to this study and up-to-date treatment by Mert Sandalci.

The book includes the research deducted by Mr. Alper, who had an important archive about the historical building and site. The first confrontation with the building goes back to 1991. The relationship which Mehmet Alper and his team established and their ongoing commitment of responsibility and interest with the structure they have monitored over the years have continued with certain intervals until the present day. The main objective of this study is to share archives, documents, and information they have compiled over the years with the pertinent parties in order to speed up the conservation process. An attempt to access all types of documents was made while meticulously researching its architectural history, whereas the compiled data was evaluated in the historical process flow. This research was initiated with written/printed / online scanning of local and foreign sources that produced works pertaining to the orphanage. The architect and his team collaborated with many academicians and specialists who had written valuable articles and papers such as Akillas Millas, Berrin Alper, Çelik Gülersoy, Hakki Göktürk, Oguz Ceylan, etc and the General Manager of the Ottoman Public Debt Administration, Edgar Vincent in order to access Ottoman documents and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Ataturk Library to acquire maps and postcards of the Prinkipo Orphanage. Therefore, this research is an important effort to save the Orphanage's cultural heritage and to convey it to the future with the proper work.

Smelled by sovereigns, this flower is the symbol of love, of belief and of beauty. It is the richest inspiration for all arts, the sultan of gardens and poetry and the eternal yearning of the nightingale. From the beginning of civilization the rose has adorned the lives of man. For thousands of years countless cultures have turned to the rose as a way of expression, they have held on to it, interpreted it, and enjoyed its beauty while enduring its thorns. Süleyman the Magnificent wrote poetry using the pseudonym Muhibbî and understanding the value of this special flower he placed it on the emerald throne of the meadow. 'The rose sits on the emerald throne and becomes a sultan It gathers all the sweet basil to commence the council.' Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar said of the rose, "The dream of eternity fitted into a moment." This book is written to provide a stroll into the imaginary and actual rose garden of humanity and enable the gathering of a most colourful bunch. Those who turn the pages will relish the rosy world of nature and roses, the history of the rose, the name of the rose and the smell and taste of roses; the rose in art and rosy pictures, rosy tiles and rosy fabrics, rosy carpets, rosy stones and rosy woods, rosy jewellery and rosy glass, the rose in poetry and the rose in music, wearing the rose and the rose gardens of our lives. With this book the writer of the TULIP book, Gül Irepoglu has taken a new look at the ROSE and embraced it.".

The Sephardic Onomasticon is an etymological research on Sephardic family names of the Jews living in Turkey. The author's point of departure for trying to establish the etymologies is: he proceeds from the premise that, after biblical times, throughout the the generations, Jews who chose surnames, tended to try and preserve something to remind themselves of the names they had used before, either in their sound or their meaning.

2016New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (24 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 73 p., color and b/w ills. The Sisli Mosque. Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Photography Collection.= Sisli Camii. Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.
1913Best.-Nr. 055948Rodosto & Constantinopoli: Manuscript & Typescript 3-9 October 1913. 1913. No Binding. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A one-page typed letter with autograph marginal notes and a two-page manuscript report in black ink. Both are written on bifolia papers with "Renage's Mill" watermark One is "Banknote Paper" the other is "Extra Strong". "Agenzia Consolare d'Italia Rodosto" & "Consolato Generale d'Italia in Constantinopoli" letterheads. 27x21 cm. The letter is in Italian report is in French. 1 p.; 2 p. Signed. Except for the horizontal centre-fold in very clean condition. A letter written by the Italian Consul General in Constantinople to the Italian chargé d'affaires accompanied by a historically significant report from the Consular Agent in Rodosto provides valuable first-hand information about the outbreak of epidemic diseases such as cholera and typhus among humans and anthrax and bubonic plague among animals in the Ottoman Empire in 1913. It also sheds light on the authorities' failure to address these public health crises while offering significant insights into the Muslim immigrants arriving in convoys to the region during the ongoing Balkan Wars. This is an invaluable firsthand account of the Sixth Cholera Pandemic in the Ottoman Empire "a time when the Empire's foundations were shaken by the Balkan War military defeats territorial losses the plight of refugees and immigrants and the dreadful calamity of the cholera epidemic between 1911 and 1913 during which no reliable official records exist regarding the exact number of cholera cases and deaths". Unat. The manuscript report opens by stating the number of direct death cases as rendered in the translation: "I believe it is my duty to inform you that on the 27th a case of cholera followed by death was reported in the town. The day before yesterday there were four other cases two of them fatal; yesterday four new ones two of which were fatal; today another case. So out of ten cases there have been five deaths." The letter goes on: "The other municipality requested a credit of 1000 piastres from Constantinople to take the measures required by the circumstances. Unfortunately no reply has been given and our local officials do not know to which authority they should turn." "Cholera is present in Kirklareli Quarante Églises Baba-Eski Babaeski à Vise Vize à Bounar-Hissar Pinarhisar à Luli Bourgaz Lüleburgaz à Ouzun Keupiru Uzunköprü and aound Krichan Kirikhan. In Tchorlou Çorlu typhus is wreaking havoc and smallpox is present here. Our entire region is devastated by an epizootic outbreak: smallpox and foot-and-mouth disease among the sheep anthrax and bubonic plague among the oxen and buffaloes. Money and serum have been requested from the Ministry of Agriculture but there has been no response. The chief veterinarian I spoke with assured me that it would be impossible to do anything until he has serum to treat the livestock and that if the epidemic disease continues to spread like this the livestock will be completely wiped out in our region." The Royal Consular Agent states that during and after the war between the Turks and Bulgarians also known as the Battle of Kirkkilise which was part of the Balkan Wars Muslim immigrants who continually flocked to Kirklareli and the surrounding areas brought cholera and other epidemic diseases to the region. "Regularly there are convoys of migrants who had left their villages in the surrounding areas of Adrianople Quarante Églises Lüleburgaz etc. before the Turco-Bulgarian War arriving from Anatolia by steamships. They are the ones who brought us cholera and the epidemic disease." He ended his manuscript report by stating there is no way to convince the authorities to have them disembark elsewhere outside the city or to prevent the arrival of these immigrants who are being directed utilizing forced requisitions to areas where cholera is spreading. This report was presented to the Italian chargé d'affaires with this letter additionally as below: "Healt Manuscript & Typescript, 3-9 October 1913. unknown
