A native of western Flanders Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq served in several posts as diplomatic representative for the Habsburg ruler Ferdinand I King of Bohemia and Hungary 1526 - 64 and Holy Roman Emperor 1556 - 64 . Busbecq's most famous mission was to the Ottoman Empire at the zenith of its power and glory during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In four letters to his friend Nicholas Michault who had been Busbecq's fellow student in Italy and afterwards was imperial ambassador to the Portuguese court he details impressions on everything he saw and experienced in Turkey including landscapes plants animals Islam ethnic groups architecture slavery military matters court practices clothing gender and domestic relations and the Sultan himself. Suleiman spelled Soleiman in the translation the Magnificent is perhaps the most distinguished figure in Turkish history and his reign saw the greatest extension of Turkish power. His devotion to his own religion and his tolerance of other faiths his munificence and generosity won him the fidelity of his subjects and the respect of his enemies. Busbecq was given the assignment of using diplomacy to check the raids of the Turks into Hungary and he proved very effective with his quick sympathy appreciation of the Turkish character and patience. He returned from Constantinople in the autumn of 1562 with an established reputation as a diplomat. Busbecq's Turkish Letters is a treasure of early travel literature reflecting Busbecq's rich literary talent classical education love for collecting antiquities and remarkable power of observation. Delightfully entertaining reading it also offers invaluable lessons on understanding and bridging cultural divides. The interest does not lie in the inevitable head-butting between two rival imperialisms in this case the remains of the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire but in the labyrinthine complexity of Ottoman government. De Busbecq is however cultured and clever and not only manages to work with the Ottomans but is also a fascinating observer and commentator who draws out the differences between his own culture and that of the Ottoman regime. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; xvi 265 pages . 2015New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 200 p. The urban development of Istanbul in the Nineteenth century: The role of expropriations. After the proclamation of the Tanzîmât Edict, the government wanted to re-arrange the city. To this end, the Building and Expropriation Regulations that determined how modern city planning would be made as of 1840 were published. It was clearly stated that the government would base expropriations made to expand roads, allotment of burnt areas again, determination of construction rules, and opening the areas where reconstruction was not allowed to settlement,in essence all new urban development activities on these new laws. While expropriations were carried out, it was emphasized that, especially when for "public interest", the operation would be made with the consent of the landowner and after the preparation of maps. All of these can be said to be the reflections of modernity. This book examines the expropriation activities which were the most important tools for the government in the process of reconstruction implemented in Istanbul in the nineteenth century. It argues that the urban development which is at the intersection of centralization and modernization, and the concept of modern expropriation was a consequence of the change in the perspective and the understanding of the Ottoman government. Additionally, in the book, while the concept of modern expropriation is being evaluated in relation to the transformation in the governmental and legal mentality, the economic and social aspects of the expropriations are also emphasized. Other reconstruction processes occurring in other cities in the Ottoman Empire and other European cities which were taken as models in the reconstruction process of the capital city were investigated and documented here for the sake of approaching the expropriations from a comparative angle. This book aims to offer a holistic addition to literature on the urban history of Istanbul in the nineteenth century.

2010New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17.5 cm). B/w and color ills. 250 p. In English. "Accessing and discussing the underground world beneath ¿stanbul is truly an ambitious enterprise. Suprisingly few archaelogical excavations have taken place for various reasons and most of the serious work conducted by scientists devoted to the issue of Istanbul's subterranean features has been left incomplete. Archeologists, eho found the acquisition of sponsorship easy for excavations and research conducted on the historical sites of the Hittites, Urartus, Sumerians, and Lycians, appear to have faced great financial difficulties when it came to exploring Istanbul's hidden depths. Consequently, we do not really have a good account of what is hidden in the subterranean world of the city. Despite the hundreds of different resources available to us, somehow they are never quite sufficient enough to guide us to that world as we follow the footsteps of history; this is mainly due to the continual construction work that changes the layout with each passing day. Even street names change regularly and every day more underpasses, overpasses, bridges, and viaducts are being constructed in the city. This means, therefore, it is inevitable that researchers will lose these traces of history and the hope they have of finding valuable information. This has been my experience and I decided to write this book in order to help others find their path and not endure the difficult experiences I have encountered. Istanbul is truly a boundless ocean. This is not a history book merely telling the story of Istanbul. We could call it a tribute to the remains of the many civilisations that have been sleeping under the city for many centuries.".
