2021New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong 4to. (24 x 31 cm). In English and Turkish. 223, [9] p., color and b/w ills. The book includes the research deducted by Mr. Alper, who had an important archive about the historical building and site. The first confrontation with the building goes back to 1991. The relationship which Mehmet Alper and his team established and their ongoing commitment of responsibility and interest with the structure they have monitored over the years have continued with certain intervals until the present day. The main objective of this study is to share archives, documents, and information they have compiled over the years with the pertinent parties in order to speed up the conservation process. An attempt to access all types of documents was made while meticulously researching its architectural history, whereas the compiled data was evaluated in the historical process flow. This research was initiated with written/printed / online scanning of local and foreign sources that produced works pertaining to the orphanage. The architect and his team collaborated with many academicians and specialists who had written valuable articles and papers such as Akillas Millas, Berrin Alper, Çelik Gülersoy, Hakki Göktürk, Oguz Ceylan, etc and the General Manager of the Ottoman Public Debt Administration, Edgar Vincent in order to access Ottoman documents and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Ataturk Library to acquire maps and postcards of the Prinkipo Orphanage. Therefore, this research is an important effort to save the Orphanage's cultural heritage and to convey it to the future with the proper work.

Smelled by sovereigns, this flower is the symbol of love, of belief and of beauty. It is the richest inspiration for all arts, the sultan of gardens and poetry and the eternal yearning of the nightingale. From the beginning of civilization the rose has adorned the lives of man. For thousands of years countless cultures have turned to the rose as a way of expression, they have held on to it, interpreted it, and enjoyed its beauty while enduring its thorns. Süleyman the Magnificent wrote poetry using the pseudonym Muhibbî and understanding the value of this special flower he placed it on the emerald throne of the meadow. 'The rose sits on the emerald throne and becomes a sultan It gathers all the sweet basil to commence the council.' Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar said of the rose, "The dream of eternity fitted into a moment." This book is written to provide a stroll into the imaginary and actual rose garden of humanity and enable the gathering of a most colourful bunch. Those who turn the pages will relish the rosy world of nature and roses, the history of the rose, the name of the rose and the smell and taste of roses; the rose in art and rosy pictures, rosy tiles and rosy fabrics, rosy carpets, rosy stones and rosy woods, rosy jewellery and rosy glass, the rose in poetry and the rose in music, wearing the rose and the rose gardens of our lives. With this book the writer of the TULIP book, Gül Irepoglu has taken a new look at the ROSE and embraced it.".

The Sephardic Onomasticon is an etymological research on Sephardic family names of the Jews living in Turkey. 2016New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (24 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 73 p., color and b/w ills. The Sisli Mosque. Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Photography Collection.= Sisli Camii. Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.
1913réf. 055948Rodosto & Constantinopoli: Manuscript & Typescript 3-9 October 1913. 1913. No Binding. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A one-page typed letter with autograph marginal notes and a two-page manuscript report in black ink. Both are written on bifolia papers with "Renage's Mill" watermark One is "Banknote Paper" the other is "Extra Strong". "Agenzia Consolare d'Italia Rodosto" & "Consolato Generale d'Italia in Constantinopoli" letterheads. 27x21 cm. The letter is in Italian report is in French. 1 p.; 2 p. Signed. Except for the horizontal centre-fold in very clean condition. A letter written by the Italian Consul General in Constantinople to the Italian chargé d'affaires accompanied by a historically significant report from the Consular Agent in Rodosto provides valuable first-hand information about the outbreak of epidemic diseases such as cholera and typhus among humans and anthrax and bubonic plague among animals in the Ottoman Empire in 1913. It also sheds light on the authorities' failure to address these public health crises while offering significant insights into the Muslim immigrants arriving in convoys to the region during the ongoing Balkan Wars. This is an invaluable firsthand account of the Sixth Cholera Pandemic in the Ottoman Empire "a time when the Empire's foundations were shaken by the Balkan War military defeats territorial losses the plight of refugees and immigrants and the dreadful calamity of the cholera epidemic between 1911 and 1913 during which no reliable official records exist regarding the exact number of cholera cases and deaths". Unat. The manuscript report opens by stating the number of direct death cases as rendered in the translation: "I believe it is my duty to inform you that on the 27th a case of cholera followed by death was reported in the town. The day before yesterday there were four other cases two of them fatal; yesterday four new ones two of which were fatal; today another case. So out of ten cases there have been five deaths." The letter goes on: "The other municipality requested a credit of 1000 piastres from Constantinople to take the measures required by the circumstances. Unfortunately no reply has been given and our local officials do not know to which authority they should turn." "Cholera is present in Kirklareli Quarante Églises Baba-Eski Babaeski à Vise Vize à Bounar-Hissar Pinarhisar à Luli Bourgaz Lüleburgaz à Ouzun Keupiru Uzunköprü and aound Krichan Kirikhan. In Tchorlou Çorlu typhus is wreaking havoc and smallpox is present here. Our entire region is devastated by an epizootic outbreak: smallpox and foot-and-mouth disease among the sheep anthrax and bubonic plague among the oxen and buffaloes. Money and serum have been requested from the Ministry of Agriculture but there has been no response. The chief veterinarian I spoke with assured me that it would be impossible to do anything until he has serum to treat the livestock and that if the epidemic disease continues to spread like this the livestock will be completely wiped out in our region." The Royal Consular Agent states that during and after the war between the Turks and Bulgarians also known as the Battle of Kirkkilise which was part of the Balkan Wars Muslim immigrants who continually flocked to Kirklareli and the surrounding areas brought cholera and other epidemic diseases to the region. "Regularly there are convoys of migrants who had left their villages in the surrounding areas of Adrianople Quarante Églises Lüleburgaz etc. before the Turco-Bulgarian War arriving from Anatolia by steamships. They are the ones who brought us cholera and the epidemic disease." He ended his manuscript report by stating there is no way to convince the authorities to have them disembark elsewhere outside the city or to prevent the arrival of these immigrants who are being directed utilizing forced requisitions to areas where cholera is spreading. This report was presented to the Italian chargé d'affaires with this letter additionally as below: "Healt Manuscript & Typescript, 3-9 October 1913. unknown

This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. A native of western Flanders Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq served in several posts as diplomatic representative for the Habsburg ruler Ferdinand I King of Bohemia and Hungary 1526 - 64 and Holy Roman Emperor 1556 - 64 . Busbecq's most famous mission was to the Ottoman Empire at the zenith of its power and glory during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In four letters to his friend Nicholas Michault who had been Busbecq's fellow student in Italy and afterwards was imperial ambassador to the Portuguese court he details impressions on everything he saw and experienced in Turkey including landscapes plants animals Islam ethnic groups architecture slavery military matters court practices clothing gender and domestic relations and the Sultan himself. Suleiman spelled Soleiman in the translation the Magnificent is perhaps the most distinguished figure in Turkish history and his reign saw the greatest extension of Turkish power. His devotion to his own religion and his tolerance of other faiths his munificence and generosity won him the fidelity of his subjects and the respect of his enemies. Busbecq was given the assignment of using diplomacy to check the raids of the Turks into Hungary and he proved very effective with his quick sympathy appreciation of the Turkish character and patience. He returned from Constantinople in the autumn of 1562 with an established reputation as a diplomat. Busbecq's Turkish Letters is a treasure of early travel literature reflecting Busbecq's rich literary talent classical education love for collecting antiquities and remarkable power of observation. Delightfully entertaining reading it also offers invaluable lessons on understanding and bridging cultural divides. The interest does not lie in the inevitable head-butting between two rival imperialisms in this case the remains of the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire but in the labyrinthine complexity of Ottoman government. De Busbecq is however cultured and clever and not only manages to work with the Ottomans but is also a fascinating observer and commentator who draws out the differences between his own culture and that of the Ottoman regime. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; xvi 265 pages .
