Four parts bound in one. 6; 6; 6; 8pp. Hole-punched and ribbon stitched within original gilt-tooled pink paper wrappers with photographic image of ship mounted on a scrap of decorative cloth itself mounted to upper wrapper. Wrappers a trifle creased with the odd small tear else fine. A rare souvenir periodical in four issues printed on board the Orient line Steam Ship Cuzco on a Mediterranean tour - apparently separate given reference to a return to Plymouth from her usual route between London and Sydney via the Suez Canal - in the year preceding her scrap-page. Each part - numbered I to IV and consisting of either six or eight pages and issued between Monday April 4 and Thursday April 28 1904 - consists of accounts of the journey and its various stopping points such as Taormina Athens and Constantinople gossipy reports of activities of those on board with numerous passengers named including 'Sports and Amusements' 'Divine Services' reports of other ships such as the 'illumination of the Italian squadron' in the bay of Naples in honour of the Kaiser's visit to Naples and of an overland trip to Corinith. The first two issues also each include a column of 'War Notes' charting events during the Russo Japanese War of 1904-5; the narrative which includes references to the siege of Port Arthur is - as often for English language productions - significantly weighted towards support of the Japanese against the mighty 'Russian Bear': . 1938réf. B872New York: Scribners 1938. First. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. S. S. Van Dine is the pen name used by American art critic Willard Huntington Wright 1888 – 1939 when he wrote detective novels. Wright was active in avant-garde cultural circles in pre-World War I New York and under the pen name which he originally used to conceal his identity he created the fictional detective Philo Vance a sleuth and aesthete who first appeared in books in the 1920s then in films and on the radio. The Gracie Allen Murder Case features the zany half of the Burns and Allen comedy team. It is in some ways a roman à clef including not just Burns and Allen but also such characters as Gracie's mother and brother. George Burns after all has described the couple's act as "All I had to do was ask 'Gracie how's your brother' and she talked for 38 years." That gave the book an unusual feel as did the comic tone of much of Gracie's dialogue. This tone suddenly shifts in a later chapter to one character's philosophically anguished speculations and then back again to Gracie. This copy is very good in yellow cloth with black titles on the spine and front cover. Minor bumping and fading at the edges. Text is age toned with some spotting on the leading page edges but no other marks or damage. The uncommon DJ is unclipped with minor chipping at the edges and moderate soiling. BI25. Scribners hardcover
1938réf. 15131938. Typed Letter Signed to Lewis E. Gensler from S.S. Van Dine with Western Union Wire from Van Dine to Gensler--1938 Letter measures 10.5 x 7.25 inches; wire measures 6.5 x 8 inches. Letter is toned with previous folds--very good condition. Wire has chipping and wear to edges and is very toned--good condition. Verso blank on both. Enigmatic letter and telegram between two famed personalities of Hollywood S.S. Van Dine Willard Huntington Wright and Lewis Gensler. Willard Wright was an American art critic and social gadfly within entertainment circles but ultimately achieved financial success writing pot-boiler detective novels starring Philo Vance under the pseudonym of S.S. Van Dine. Lewis Gensler's work spanned both coasts as a composer songwriter author and producer. He often incorporated his songs into films he produced. His movie "College Swing" starring George Burns Gracie Allen Martha Raye and Bob Hope is referenced in Van Dine's letter. Gensler primarily was associated with Paramount Pictures. Van Dine humorously writes in the undated letter "We ironed out a few details straightened a couple of incipient kinks and beat the shell game by lifting the hat hiding what seemed to be the most promising idea." Van Dine had just had a lunch date with a "Mr. Holman" who likely worked with Lewis Gensler. The telegram dated Feb. 24 1938 sent the day before Van Dine was to meet Holman states "Outline going first rate and licking nicely with a double snapper. With no more Jack Louis fights scheduled hereabouts and all the local racetracks closed you should have a first draft in a week or ten days." In the early 1930's Van Dine wrote screen treatments for Warner Brothers including 12 two-reel "murder mystery" short films. Piecing the dates together we surmise Van Dine was writing the screenplay for the "Gracie Allen Murder Case" his last novel. The novel published in 1938 was released as a movie produced by Paramount Pictures shortly after Van Dine would pass away in April 1939. unknown
