1946réf. 43547London: Nay-Idish teater 1946. Paperback. First edition. Original stapled paper wrappers 4to 16 4 pages including illustrations and photos. 29 cm. Text in Yiddish 16 pages and English 4 pages. Monthly periodical published by the New Yiddish Theater in London. Numbering was continuous despite the volume change with the start of the new calendar year. "In 1945 playwright producer and manager Abish Meisels staged an adaptation of Abraham Goldfaden's The Ten Commandments at the New Yiddish Theatre in the East End. An Austrian refugee Meisels immigrated to London in 1938. Five years later he walked down Adler Street and entered Adler Hall. He turned a key unlocking the doors to the New Yiddish Theatre. According to Meisels his mission was 'to present the best in Jewish drama; to keep alive the art of the Jewish theatre and to inculcate into the minds of the younger generation a love and appreciation of their lives customs and language.' .Meisels' production may have been salient for London's post-war Jewish community. Many of his 20-person company were refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe as were others of London's Jewish population. They found in Meisels' theatre as he put it a 'much needed cultural educational and social centre' and a sense of belonging. By the time Meisels opened his theatre in 1943 the Yiddish stage had been in existence for nearly 70 years. Its story began in 1876 when writer Abraham Goldfaden staged the first Yiddish theatrical productions in Romania and Russia. Yiddish plays were first performed in the UK in the 1880s concurrent with the mass migration of Yiddish-speaking Eastern European Jews to Britain. Between 1881 and 1914 nearly 120000 of these immigrants entered the country most settling in the East End. These Yiddish-speaking Jews brought with them the desire for entertainment in their native tongue. Meisels' company was the last theatre in Britain devoted to Yiddish productions. It followed the Hebrew Dramatic Club on Princes Street 1886-1887; the Pavilion Theatre onWhitechapel Road 1906-1934; the Temple of Art known as the Feinman Yiddish People's Theatre on Commercial Road; the Grand Palais on Commercial Road 1934-1970 and the Jewish National Theatre at Adler Hall 1936- 1939. The use of Yiddish declined asthe community became assimilated. In 1947 Meisels locked the doors to the NewYiddish Theatre for the last time." 1880réf. 43529Cincinnati & Chicago: From the American Hebrew Publishing House the Bloch Publishing and Printing Company 1880. 1880s Preface is dated 1856. Original Full Leather binding with black & gilt spine label 12mo 2 leaves iii-xii 1243 pages. 17 cm. Title in Hebrew at head of title. Copyright page lists 1853 the copyright date for the first edition of Leeser's original translation of the Twenty Four Books of the Holy Scriptures published in 1854. The present Preface is dated Philadelphia 1856. The 1880s date is based on Singerman 3204 which notes the presence of the "undated 'Advertisement to the London Edition.' Repeated.in undated Bloch editions 1243 p. with acopyright date of 1853." Preceding the 1856 Preface is the undated 4-page "Advertisement to the London Edition" which notes that "This corrected version supplies an admitted want to our times. The so-called Authorized or Anglican version of the Scriptures.betrays great need for revision.Jews who of their own accord introduce the Anglican version into their households and who provide none other for the schools commit a flagrant breach of sacred trust in the abandonment of those for whose safe guidance they are immediately responsible to a helpless ignorance of truth-an ignorance all the more fatal because false interpreataions are obtruded in season and out of season with an unscrupulous object-to procure apostasy i.e. conversion from Judaism.Hence this version accomplished by a learned and conscientious Hebraist i.e. Leeser has found acceptance from all denominations. In the 10-page 1856 Preface Leeser explains in detail the need for his new translation giving many examples from earlier Christian translations of what we would today call "Christian bias." Leeser here acknowledges recent partial Jewish translations noting "Hitherto-at least before the completion of the first edition of this work two years ago-no other translation in the English had been completed by Jews although several had been commenced; for instance Dr. Raphall's and Mr. A. De Sola's and Mr Lindenthal's book of Genesis with Hebrew text and ample notes and Dr. Benische's version with Hebrew text to the end of the Second Book of Kings." OCLC 233529725 locates 4 copies worldwide U Illinois Andrews U Community of Christ MO UPenn of an "1853" edition published in "Cincinnati ; Chicago : from the American Hebrew Pub. House the Bloch Pub. and Print. Co." with 1243 pages and 17 cm high ours is 16 cm. However the OCLC listing notes neither the "Advertisement to the London Edition" nor Leeser's Preface of 1856 both of whose pagination does not affect that of the main text. Such was the enmity between Leeser and leaders of the Reform movement that it would seem surprising that Leeser would authorize a Bloch publication of his bible during his lifetime given that Bloch was owned by Isaac M. Wise' brother-in-law Edward Bloch. Only a year after the date of the preface in our copy Leeser famously printed an "anonymous attack on Wise signed 'Lawyers' in the pages of his Occident shortly after the appearance of Minhag Amerika in 1857. Leesers' anti-Reform rejoinder singled out Bloch & Co. for allegedly keeping its store open on the Jewish Sabbath and closing it on Sunday the Christian Sabbath." Singerman. In our Bloch copy the copyright is still held by Isaac Leeser; It was not until 1888 20 years after Leeser's death in 1868 that "his Bloch's firm obtained the copyright of this popular and frequently reprinted landmark text." Neither Singerman nor Goldman list any edition published by Bloch before 1884. Singerman Nr 1418 and Goldman Nr 13 both list a similar edition 1856 published in Philadelphia by C. Sherman & Son also with the 1856 Preface and identical pagination and physically smaller than the 1853 ed.with a new preface by Leeser." Goldman specifically writes that the "Advertisement to the London Edition" does not appear until an 1865 edition is "published in London in 5625 1865 by Trubner & Co. printed by John Childs and Son. Explaining the need for a new translation in the prefatory 'advertisement' the publisher criticized the standard King James Version authorized by the English Church for being flawed with 'abundant cases of false rendering' and 'propagandist tendencies.' They thus chose to issue Leeser's translation despite the existence of English translations by Christians because "this version accomplished by a learned and conscientious Hebraist has found acceptance from all denominations." This may be a previously unrecorded stereotype reissue of Trubner's London edition by Bloch issued with the 1853 Copyright date the 1856 Preface and the undated Advertisement though its mid-19th Century binding with black leather spine label would not be much later than 1880. He left behind memoirs a spiritual autobiography written under the name Joseph Lumbroso and a book of psalms Lex Adonai which represent the earliest known Jewish writings in the Americas. Denounced to the Holy Office of the Inquisition the family was first arrested in 1589. Under intense interrogation and torture family members implicated one another leading to a public penance auto-da-fé. Netsah Yisrael "compared the Mosaic law with every known ancient or modern religious or political system. in a manner which well demonstrates his broad culture and extensive reading and comes to the conclusion that.Mosaism is immeasurably superior to all othersystems from those of ancient Canaan and Egypt to Christianity" Drachman 81. Zev Wolf Schur aka William; 1884-1910 was a "pioneer Hebrew writer and journalist in the United States. His most important book is Nezah Yisrael 1897 a defense of Judaism against Christian attacks against Reform Judaism against socialism and anarchism. It affirms the twin axiom: the eternal existence of Jewry and the eternality of the Torah. Supporting nationalism it was the first Hebrew work in America to react favorably to political Zionism" Eisig Silberschlag in EJ. 1945réf. 43346Nyu-York New York: Zamoshtser Brentsh 375 Arbeter-Ring 1945. 1st edition of author’s first of seven published monographs all on the Shoah. Original printed paper wrappers small 8vo 31 pages 20 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as “To You My Freed Brothers and Sisters: Postwar Problems of the Jewish People.” Author's afterword: “In 1939 the author published a book about the formation of a young Jew. The author then wrote his book on Orthodox concepts. During the six years of camp life he grew older and changed. Along with all his works and writings this work was also lost to him. His motto at the time ‘Turn my back to Europe!’ confirmed the story with his bloodiest pen. It is still quite a long way even with the current treacherous number of Jews in Europe to bring them all out in the best and only way for them: To the Land of Israel! With the ending of the exile we will lose the last psychologically and morally broken Jews. A seriously ill person is not taken a long way to a ‘Fulkom Heilanstalt’ but is given first aid on the spot right where he is lying! And here is the cry for immediate momentary help concerning the present brochure. As with a seriously ill patient - it has no son to lead in political or religious discussions! And so it is for the rest of our nation still in danger of going under as a nation perhaps even more than in the past! This brochure is therefore an appeal first of all to all political parties about the over-political danger of moral and physical collapse; About the suicidal and self-deprecating mendation of weak sick souls and the various evildoers of all kinds. Of course it still lacks the concreteness the planning. But it is only a shriek which cannot be evaluated according to all the rules of the art of singing. Here it is shouted: from one who has not lost the last bit of fire and the last bit of patience! It is only to encourage to remind and to make attention in every way. To all those who consider themselves to be Jewish organizations this should be the call of the Ribs: come and strengthen the Jewish trembling knees! Keep them first at the Jewish consciousness and at their human height and later my dear later we will discuss. Paris June 1945.” Mordechai Strigler 1918/21-1998 was a “prolific Polish-born Yiddish writer and editor of the Yiddish Forward…. He…obtained a rabbi diploma….From 1937 he worked as a moral preacher in the Warsaw Great Synagogue. After the Germans invaded Poland he tried to return to his parents. However he failed was captured by the Germans and spent the following years in various forced ghettos and concentration camps. From June 1943 he was then a prisoner in the Majdanek concentration camp. On July 28 1943 he was transported from there to work camp C in Skarzysko-Kamienna by prisoner transport. It was an ammunition factory belonging to the HASAG Group in which the prisoners without protective clothing were exposed to the picric acid used to fill underwater mines. This yellowing substance led to severe poisoning and reduced the life expectancy of the inmates to three months. He wrote about his one-year stay there during his imprisonment but these records were lost. He was released on 11 April 1945 in Buchenwald…. After the end of the World War Strigler found a job with the Yiddish magazine Undzer Vort in Paris and settled there for the next seven years. The six-volume work Oisgebrente Likht Extinguished Lights was written here between 1948 and 1952 in which Strigler reports on his experience of the Shoah. Strigler had been in contact with the American-Jewish poet H. Leivick since 1945. He quickly recognized its literary potential. In 1952 Strigler emigrated to the United States and became editor of the Yiddish weekly Yidischer Kemfer in New York. He worked there until 1995 and wrote countless articles under 20 pseudonyms; between 1987 and 1998 the year of his death he also worked for the then Yiddish daily newspaper Forverts. In addition to his journalistic texts Strigler also wrote poems memoirs political commentaries and stories and novels. The focus of his fictional narrative texts was the life of Polish Jews before the Second World War. It was also important to him not only to depict the personal and collective experience of the camp stays during the Nazi regime in a literary way but also to analyze it…. In 1978 Strigler received the Itzik Manger Prize for Yiddish Literature. In 1998 he was to be awarded an honorary doctorate in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. A few days before the award ceremony however Strigler died” Wikipedia. OCLC: 7413354. The University of Toronto keeps their copy in their Rare Book Collection Light toning Very Good Condition.
