The objective of this book is to present the Zeugma collection as a whole. This may help the artistic evaluation of them by scholars: decorative scheme, iconography, comparison with other mosaics and so on. All of the mosaics in this book date from the second and the third centuries and for this reason no effort has been made to present them in a chronological order.". 1968réf. 100987Fredericton New Brunswick January 9th through June 14th 1968. 1968. Very good. - A correspondence including 2 letters by the Canadian-born British Ice Hockey Player Colonel Gordon "Don" Dailley inquiring as to the possibilities of booking plays at his community's playhouse. The first is a Typed Letter on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper addressed to Grant Mills the president of Maine's Lakewood Theatre. Dailley writes "I have had the pleasure of spending short holidays at your Inn and seeing shows during your Summer Theatre Season. We have often wondered whether it would not be worthwhile to bring one or two of the touring shows which visit Lakewood to Fredericton New Brunswick to perform at our Playhouse" He asks if Mills could put him in touch with the "person who organizes the season for you." Signed "G.D. Dailley". The retained copy of a letter by Henry Richards the person who books the productions dated January 18 1968 is stapled to Dailley's letter. A brief autograph note signed with his initials by Henry Richards on his memo paper forwards both Dailley's letter and his reply suggesting that perhaps the play "What Did We Do Wrong" produced by Jean Dalrymple might be a good fit "This letter and my answer should give you the picture. I understand that it is a most beautiful theatre." Signed "H". A retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's typed letter dated June 7 1968 suggests that they could travel to Fredericton after their run at the Lakewood Theatre in Maine. Dailley has penned an Autograph Letter on his 10-1/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide "The Bliss Carmen House" stationery apologizing "I was sorry to find out that the Playhouse here will take their annual leave from 15 Aug to 9 Sep therefore we will not be able to handle What did we do wrong" He goes on to ask "If you have something else travelling in the fall-early fall please let me know." Signed "G.D. Dailley". Very good. The Canadian-born British Ice Hockey player Gordon "Don" Dailley 1911-1989 represented Great Britain at international competitions and with his team of mostly British-born Canadians won the gold medal for Britain at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Dailley served in Great Britain throughout World War II and subsequently held various positions in Ottawa being promoted to Colonel in 1955. He also served in the Korean War. Back in Canada he set up plans for the African Lion Safari and was involved with the United Nations Association as well as OXFAM the New Brunswick Symphony and the Canadian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums. Dailley purchased the childhood home of the poet Bliss Carman "The Bliss Carman House" located at Shore Street in Fredericton New Brunswick. The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. Fredericton, New Brunswick, January 9th through June 14th, 1968.
1924réf. 36973Hillside New Jersey: December 7 and December 14 1924. 1924. Good. - Two letters signed by the novelist and woman's suffrage activist Grace Kellogg Griffith addressed to the American lecture manager James B. Pond together with Pond's retained copy of his brief response. In her first letter dated December 7 1924 and consisting of over 350 words typed on 2 sheets of her 8-1/2 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide personal stationery Grace Kellogg Griffith mentions taking the liberty of showing up at Pond's office. They had met "at the home of Dr. Gibbons a couple of years ago" and she thought that he might grant her a few moments but "Apparently however I failed to pass the acid test required by your secretary who refused to announce me to you". She explains that she's been lecturing and speaking for the past 10 years "and was during the campaign of 1914 a paid suffrage speaker of considerable reputation in Philadelphia". She further elucidates that she can no longer keep up with the demands for her to lecture "Since the publication of a very successful novel The Mould last winter". Many of those who seek her out expect her to speak "gratis" but she is now only taking on paid engagements. Her husband who is secretary of the Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce "is much interested in my work and feels that I have a big future in this line. As he employs many high-priced speakers every year he ought to be something of a connoisseur" and suggested she seek Pond's services as a lecture manager. Signed in full "Grace Kellogg Griffith". Folded for mailing with a tiny piece out from the top left corner of each page. Pond has stamped the date at the top and briefly annotated the letter in red. In the retained copy of his December 14th letter Pond dismissively responds: "I am very interested to learn that your husband employes sic many high priced speakers every year. He has never engaged any from us". Grace Kellogg responds in a second letter this one with over 90 words dated December 14 1924 typed on 11 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide creamy white paper. Speaking of her husband her closing paragraph reveals how rude she considered Pond's response: "He employs only the very best speakers available: and I think it just possible that perhaps your business methods -- though so refreshingly unique - do not strongly attract the 'best' either in speakers or in patronage". Signed in full "Grace Kellogg Griffith". Folded for mailing there is a tiny piece out from the top left corner with adjacent staining from a paper clip. There is a small brown stain to the bottom edge of the page. Born in Bangor Maine the author and women's suffrage speaker Grace Kellogg Griffith 1885-1987 sold her first poem which was published when she was only 8 years old and had her first novel serialized in "The National Magazine" when she was only 17. She lived and taught English in Istanbul for 3 years where she met her first husband D. Griffith. Back in the U.S. she resided in New Jersey and New York where involved with the women's suffrage movement she worked in Margaret Sanger's office. A journalist she also published several novels: "Arise and Go" "The Beloved Tenant" and "The House of the Silent Drum" among others. Late in life she returned to her studies at the University of Vermont following the death of her third husband where she published her master's thesis "The Two Lives of Edith Wharton". Grace Kellogg was a member of the "Women Strike For Peace" and of the "Committee for Non-Violent Action". Hillside, New Jersey: December 7 and December 14, 1924. unknown
