The report Uncertainty and Conservatism in the Seismic Analysis and Design of Nuclear Facilities published by the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE Working Group on Quantification of Uncertainties evaluates how safety margins and variability are calculated in nuclear plant engineering. It addresses the identification of conservatisms the quantification of safety unknowns and methods to balance structural reliability with realistic design responses. Key Evaluation Areas: Seismic Demand & Capacity: Assessing how ground motion variations and structural responses introduce safety gaps. Inelastic Energy Absorption: Accounting for the ability of structures to dissipate seismic energy safely beyond elastic limits. Risk and Fragility: Analyzing component failure probabilities to refine deterministic design rules into risk-informed practices. The American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE is a tax-exempt professional body founded in 1852 to represent members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. Headquartered in Reston Virginia it is the oldest national engineering society in the United States. Its constitution was based on the older Boston Society of Civil Engineers from 1848. ASCE is dedicated to the advancement of the science and profession of civil engineering and the enhancement of human welfare through the activities of society members. It has more than 143000 members in 177 countries. Its mission is to provide essential value to members their careers partners and the public; facilitate the advancement of technology; encourage and provide the tools for lifelong learning; promote professionalism and the profession; develop and support civil engineers. This volume was among several dozen books from Temple Rice Hollcroft's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his ink stamp signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. He received his Ph.D. in 1917 from Cornell University under Virgil Snyder. Hollcroft was a mathematics professor at Wells College from 1918 to 1954 from which he retired as professor emeritus. Hollcroft served for 14 years as Associate Secretary of the American Mathematical Society. In 1932 in Zurich he was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematician ICM.
