Tate Adams AM was an Australian print-maker and engraver. Widely regarded as the 'Godfather' of contemporary Australian printmaking Tate taught printmaking to many of Australia's greatest print-makers established print specialist galleries and founded and supported Lyre Bird Press to print high calibre printed works. Wynns Coonawarra Estate is a famed winery in the township of Coonawarra South Australia. Coonawarra is region that has a singular story based on a unique cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa soil over limestone. Established as a 'fruit colony' in the 1880s the region provided grapes for many of the great wines of the early 20th century. After a long period of significant decline the region became known for quality wine again after David Wynn established Wynns Coonawarra Estate in 1951. Through the second half of the 20th century Coonawarra and particularly Coonawarra Cabernet was one of the most sought after wines and wine regions in Australia. Older vintages of Wynns 'Black Label' and 'Red Stripe' hold a special place in Australian wine lovers' cellars and hearts. Over the years David Wynn engaged a number of artists and writers such as Tate Adams and Walter James to record and celebrate the Coonawarra region and Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Redding was a British journalist and writer. Whilst working in Paris he broke the news of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. He worked tirelessly for a number of newspapers and magazines including the Monthly and the Metropolitan. His most influential work was his History and Description of Modern Wines 1833 with later editions in 1836 1851 and 1860; the text was based on careful personal observation and gleanings from many sources including Jullien and Chaptal. Here Redding provides a more detailed examination solely of the wine trade in France due to the importance and size of the trade with Great Britain which had been recently encouraged by a liberalisation of trade laws and the taxation applied to French wines. In addition to the expected description of the major producing areas and celebrated vineyards there is a detailed discussion of wine making practices viticulture soils the technical analysis of wine and distillation; comparative measurements taxation and consumer trends. The major part of the work is devoted to the wines of the Gironde and the greater Bordeaux area. There are also sizeable chapters on Burgundy Champagne and the Loire. There is also a significant amount of statistical information about French wine production alcohol levels pricing and taxation together with a very useful Alphabetical Table of the important French vineyards and their departments as of 1860. Scarce. An excellent copy and a cornerstone of any serious collection on the wines of France. Significant as a detailed record of French wine production and trade before the devastation of phylloxera. § Gabler G35830; Simon BV p.109; Simon BG p.121; Noling p.342; Bitting 391. 1792réf. 65431792. 59 leaves enumerating the names of grapes cereal crops and oils and their prices for nearly two centuries. Small folio 273 x 178 mm. 18th-cent. vellum over boards tail of spine defective two of four ties lacking. Burgundy: 1622-1792. A fascinating and rare survival which details the precipitous rise in the prices of Burgundian wine and the emergence of a hierarchy among regions and vintages over a 170-year period. This document consisting of three gatherings 28; 28; 3 leaves bound together and written in several legible hands provides a wealth of information on grain harvests in the region which varied greatly from year to year and indicates years with disastrous harvests. The present manuscript constitutes a unique history of agriculture in Burgundy especially pertaining to the evolving market for Côte de Nuits wine. “Burgundy had no experience like the boomtime of 18th-century Bordeaux. No new wines were invented no new districts planted. The Bordeaux picture is all expansion and creation; the Burgundy one of evolving tastes and techniques of new market forces and overall of slowly progressing definition: a more precise notion of the character style and value of the wine from each corner of the Côte…In the Côte de Nuits the notion of the ‘cru’ was further advanced…The vineyards were generally less overcrowded and by now planted with cuttings rather than layers; hence more deep-rooting. Increasingly in the 18th century owners of the most prestigious crus selected their best grapes to make separate cuvées the best vat being called the ‘tête de cuvée’.”–Hugh Johnson Vintage 1989 pp. 267 & 272. The motivation for compiling this record-book may have come from the introduction of a law in 1622 that outlawed the sale of Lyonnais and Beaujolais wines as Burgundian. The records of the first three decades consist mostly of grains and oil from the region but in the early 1670s wines begin to predominate and the lists for each year become increasingly long. It is very likely that at this point landowners would have shifted to using any arable land for vastly more lucrative grapes. By the 1690s dozens of grape varietals are noted from communes such as Auvilliers Les Cailles Chambolle Chorey Comblanchien Corgoloin Côte de Beaune Gilly Magny Saint Georges Saint Julien Les Cailles Vaucrains Pouilly Prissey etc. Prices for wine rose enormously from the 1690s and experienced peaks in 1701 1733 and 1770. Wines are increasingly categorized by the mid-18th century according to vineyard and in some cases cru. The name “de Bays” appears several times in the manuscript and the signature of “de Bays” is found at the end of the year 1771. Very few comparable documents survive and the present manuscript provides a vast amount of data on the prices for wine grapes and grains in the 17th and 18th centuries. A couple leaves browned. unknown

The 15th Packer novel there were 16 all Gold Medal PBOs published by this talented & prolific writer in a period of less than 10 years--during which she also wrote and edited as Ann Aldrich a pioneering series of Lesbian nonfiction titles all but one of them published by Gold Medal. At their best Packer's crime novels--dark tales of psychological terror in suburban & small-town settings--compare quite favorably with those of David Goodis for example or her one-time housemate Patricia Highsmith & deserve to be brought back into print. A number of them in fact were slated for publication in Barry Gifford's distinguished Black Lizard series before its sale to Vintage. Anthony Boucher called Packer "consistently the most sensitive & illuminating writer of paperback originals." No faint praise from a man who was an early champion of Jim Thompson's PBOs. This is the only book with the name Meaker for a character the author once said. Vin Packer is the pseudonym of Marijane Meaker. Cover art by Leo & Diane Dillon. When Maggie married him she knew that he was different. It was as though a part of him was kept hidden concealed warped.
