Wister an American writer and historian active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century is best known for his best-selling novel The Virginian; a work that fostered the creation of the cowboy as an American folk hero and established the genre of 'Western' fiction. He wrote many other works including several musical items. In 1923 Watch Your Thirst was performed at Wister's club The Tavern Club a private social club in Boston that held frequent dinners lectures and musical and theatre performances for its members. The fictional preface attributed to the long past Samuel Johnson sets the tone by noting his distaste not just lack of esteem for a people that can no longer trust itself to drink moderately. The half title asks the question "You may lead a man to water but can you stop his drink The libretto tells the story of Juno the Queen of Olympus concerned with propriety and virtue championing prohibition and other restrictions on mankind whilst other gods including Bacchus Venus and Minerva seek to circumvent or ignore her wishes drinking synthetic gin and cocktails where ever possible. Falling in love under the unwitting influence of his 'hooch' she embarrasses herself with Ganymede a mortal Bootlegger. Juno's principles are undermined and when confronted by the other residents of Olympus she agrees to relent so long as her secret is kept safe. There does not appear to have been any public performance and there is no record of any music although Wister most likely wrote music for the work having studied music at Harvard. Contemporary newspaper reviews are limited to reviewing and announcing this work: "A picture of prohibition enforcement on Mt Olympus that in both its satire and its wit is a most original burlesque on prohibition in theory and in practice."² An unusual and amusing response to prohibition and a worthy addition to any imbiber's collection. The box states that the glasses are crystal lead Free and made in Germany. Presumably they could have been used to contain some heavy water but are not suitable for beer or ale. Box has slight wear and soiling. The United States part of the Joint Verification Experiment carried out in 1988 as the Kearsarge event in Operation Touchstone. Twenty-five years later before tensions increased between Russia and the United States a joint commemoration of the event was held at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site formerly the Nevada Test Site. JVE provided the first opportunity for scientists from US and Soviet nuclear weapons laboratories to meet and work cooperatively. At the Nevada Test Site and at the follow-on experiment at the Soviet Semipalatinsk Test Site they developed confidence-building steps that made possible the ratification of the TTBT in 1990. The objective of the JVE was to calibrate the seismic yield estimation capability of underground nuclear explosions conducted in both countries. It involved the unprecedented US yield measurement of a Soviet nuclear explosion at its then nuclear test site in Kazakhstan and the reciprocal Soviet yield measurement of a US nuclear explosion at the Nevada Test Site. Bordeaux its Wines and the Claret Country was published in London later that year. Féret then convinced Cocks of the value of a French translation Bordeaux et ses Vins which was published in 1850. Cocks died in 1854. Subsequent editions in French overseen by Féret ensued and in 1883 a second English edition was published being a revised and updated translation of the 4th French Edition October 1881. New editions often colloquially described as Cocks & Féret are still published roughly every 10 years or so in French and English. The wines of Bordeaux were Clive Coates' first love and what he first wrote on although he later fell harder in love with Burgundy. A keen collector of wine books he had copies of most editions of Cocks & Féret and it is likely this facsimile is of a copy from his personal collection. Jean Baptiste Eugène Vergez 1846-1925 was a native of Bordeaux and part of the Bordeaux Landscape School. Precise recipes are provided for commercial quantities of tinctures colourings ethers etc. There are also recipes for artificial spirits i.e. rectified spirit alcohol enhanced with flavours to create artificial rum brandy cognac whisky etc. In the preface Gaskell notes the British consumer's preference for imported wines and liqueurs and seeks to improve the British production of liqueurs etc. and by implication reducing the importation from Europe by providing detailed instructions using pure ingredients. Whilst the processes described for making generic liqueurs and cremes conform with current commercial production some of the other practices recommended don't. For example the chapter on wines discusses how to flavour carbonated white wine with syrups essences and ethers to taste like Bollinger Mumm or Veuve Cliquot. Apart from an advertisment to the rear by the author a doctor of chemistry offering to supply the necessary ingredients for compounding wines spirits and liqueurs the author's background is unknown.
