Volume I: ESTC No. N8073. Volume II: ESTC No. T78343. Mandeville"s notorious social and economic satire positing that self-interest and vice may unintentionally generate public prosperity. Mandeville"s notorious work opens with the satirical poem "The Grumbling Hive; or Knaves Turn"d Honest" in which a prosperous hive collapses after its inhabitants are made virtuous. The volume also includes "An Inquiry into the Origin of Moral Virtue" "An Essay on Charity and Charity-Schools" and "A Search into the Nature of Society." Part II continues the argument in a series of six dialogues between Horatio and Cleomenes answering critics of the first part and further developing Mandeville"s views. Bernard Mandeville 1670-1733 was a Dutch-born physician philosopher and satirist who settled in England.
