1729rif. 1016H31London: J. Tonson; J. Roberts 1729-1732. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5". None. A uniformly bound two-volume set of Mandeville"s controversial "Fable of the Bees" pairing the sixth edition with the first edition of Part II a provocative defence of private vice as a source of public prosperity. Uniformly bound in contemporary full calf sympathetically rebacked with later calf. A complete two-volume set of Mandeville"s controversial masterpiece bringing together the sixth edition of the original work with first edition of the separately published second part. Volume I: ESTC No. N8073. Volume II: ESTC No. T78343. Mandeville"s notorious social and economic satire positing that self-interest and vice may unintentionally generate public prosperity. Mandeville"s notorious work opens with the satirical poem "The Grumbling Hive; or Knaves Turn"d Honest" in which a prosperous hive collapses after its inhabitants are made virtuous. The volume also includes "An Inquiry into the Origin of Moral Virtue" "An Essay on Charity and Charity-Schools" and "A Search into the Nature of Society." Part II continues the argument in a series of six dialogues between Horatio and Cleomenes answering critics of the first part and further developing Mandeville"s views. Bernard Mandeville 1670-1733 was a Dutch-born physician philosopher and satirist who settled in England. The Fable of the Bees was condemned by moralists and presented by a grand jury as a public nuisance. This work became widely regarded as one of the 18th century"s most provocative attacks on moral idealism. Uniformly bound in contemporary full calf sympathetically rebacked with later calf. Externally smart. Rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to cloth. Slight discolouration to perimeters of calf boards. Slight rubbing to boards with the odd mark. Previous owner's bookplate to front paste downs. Slight discolouration from binder's glue to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Small 1 inch closed tear to fore edge of R8 not affecting the text. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot; light scattered spotting to first and last few leaves. One or two light marks to fore edge. Slight cockling to leaves. Very Good J. Tonson; J. Roberts hardcover
