The first edition of this work was published 1924-27. It was instantly recognised as the primary reference on the evolution of English furniture from the Middle Ages to the Late Georgian period. It was consistently in demand and soon went out of print. The Second Edition, published in 1954, was entirely revised and enlargedby one of the two original collaborators, Ralph Edwards, who at that time was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was an outstanding authority, well placed to produce such a mammoth revision. The Dictionary is, within its chronological limits, a comprehensive survey of the whole wide field of English domestic furniture. Later research has added details but the basic body of knowledge remains unchallenged. It remains the standard book referred to in all sale catalogues

In southeast Sicily, near the town of Noto, Villa Elena?a former monastery restored by Jacques Garcia?is a tranquil oasis among fragrant orchards. Reflecting the interior designer?s passion for ancient civilizations, the domain blends classical, Arabian, and Norman influences with elements borrowed from the Renaissance and the baroque, mirroring Sicilian history. With views stretching to the sea and to Syracuse, the villa is surrounded by shady terraces and lush gardens. This home ? evocative of Lampedusa?s The Leopard ? has been restored to its former glory through magnificent salons decked with marble, stucco work, majolica tiles, silk, and velvet, revealed here for the first time. Bruno Ehrs?s photographs, taken throughout each season of the year, masterfully capture the decadent splendor and aristocratic lifestyle of this particularly sumptuous locale in Sicily.

The story of the illustrated book from the earliest printed books to the present day, told through the collections of the V&A's National Art Library. Throughout history, images have been used to reflect the meaning of words and to enhance our understanding of texts. With the invention of mechanized printing in Germany in the 15th century, illustrated books were no longer the preserve of the elite and became a source of knowledge, instruction and pleasure for a wider audience. Traditional accounts of the illustrated book survey its history in terms of technological advances, from illumination to hand-drawn illustrations and photography. This study offers a new approach, grouping books by subject - from natural history and travel to art, architecture and fashion. Gathered here are some of the most influential and compelling examples of the illustrated book, all chosen from the collections of the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Each chapter starts with a general introduction to the subject, followed by key examples accompanied by narrative captions. The commentaries range beyond the illustrations to consider the whole book, the design, typeface, binding, inks and papers. Many of the books are not on display to the public and have been specially photographed for this volume. Most examples have been chosen for their significance, being innovative and beautiful. But humble books, often overlooked in histories, have also been selected, when particularly effective in their field, or simply memorable. From beautiful printed Psalters and Books of Hours, to striking natural history books such as Audubon's Birds of America, La Fontaine's Fables illustrated by Marc Chagall, Serlio's treatise on architecture and Owen Jones's Grammar of Ornament, this book gives a fascinating overview of some of the finest illustrated books ever created. In the face of recent pronouncements about the death of the printed book, this volume demonstrates the enduring appeal of the illustrated book.

Dixonary is the first comprehensive book on one of Britain's best known and most highly regarded product designers, in his own words and with a wealth of illustrations showing the inspiration behind each work he has produced in almost 30 years of design. Self-taught and a child of the punk era, Dixon (born 1959) founded his own studio in 1991 and became Head of Design at Habitat in 1998 before reestablishing his own brand, Tom Dixon - a lighting and furniture design and manufacturing company - in 2002. He has also been Creative Director at Artek, the Finnish furniture company founded by Alvar and Aino Aalto. Dixon's artistic career began when he discovered the pleasures of welding while repairing damaged motorcycle frames; he went on to specialize in welded salvage furniture and became known as a designer when his S-Chair was manufactured by Guido Cappellini in 1991. Dixon's previous books include Rethink (2002), an analysis of each room in the modern home, and The Interior World of Tom Dixon (2008), a book of ideas and observations on design, materials and style. Dixonary is the first complete monograph of this British innovator.

BESESSEN Die geheime Kunst des Polsterns Upholstered seating is familiar to all of us as a more or less constant companion in everyday life. Upholstery conveys a sense of security and promises comfort, suggests or creates status, and tells a (hi)story. We barely give a thought to its interior. Yet a glimpse inside the chairs and armchairs is a journey into secrets, of lashed and sprung constructions, which prove to be unknown masterpieces of craftsmanship. DEEP-SEATED: The Secret Art of Upholstery traces pieces of furniture and their inner details and illustrates why upholstery is a constant constituent of cultural and social history. From the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism, Historicism, and Art Nouveau to designs by Arne Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto, the history of upholstered furniture is traced up to the present day. It also includes a closer examination of the corresponding tools, textiles, braiding, tassels, and cushions. All this accumulated knowledge is summarized at the end in an extensive glossary for reference.

Ponti's style was dominated by an exultant sense of the aesthetic both in his objects and his numerous buildings. Published in the same style of the successful Minimum Architects series, the Minimum Designers series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on, or the glasses we are wearing--all have a genius behind to be discovered. These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of a historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarizing the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

In their whirlwind, a generation of creators has emerged, carrying arts of living different from those of the past: Mark Brazier-Jones, Franck Evennou, Elizabeth Garouste, Marco de Gueltzl, Hubert Le Gall, Thierry Peltrault, Laurence Picot, Andrea Salvetti or even Claude de Wulf. In order to give flesh to this period in France, this book has collected the words of a witness of its actors, Elisabeth Delacarte whose Avant-Scène gallery is one of the few to have survived until today. For almost 40 years, it has defended singular artists who have become essential in their field. From France to England, Italy or Russia, the elaborate portraits dedicated to them evoke the atmosphere and the news that accompany them. Each embodies the importance of artistic craftsmanship, and all take particular paths in order to express universal emotions in their own way. The great subjects of today are declined along their course. We discover upcycling ahead of time with the fiery Marco de Gueltzl and the beginnings of the libertine punk Mark Brazier-Jones, the vital need for nature in the works of Frank Evennou or the sculptor chef Andrea Salvetti, the romanticism advocated by Laurence Picot, the joyful poetry of Elizabeth Garouste, the humorous fantasy of Hubert Le Gall. They have in common to have changed their lives to devote themselves to art furniture. This is also the case of Elisabeth Delacarte. His personal point of view illuminates from the inside the changes in the decorative arts at the end of the 20th century. Staging the productions of each artist, decoration projects punctuate the book and leave room for contemplation.
