1960This is a very good 5 volume hardcover set (complete) three volumes with dustwrappers, two without. All volumes very clean inside, no marks. The off white dustwrappers are tanned and have a few stains to the spine of the last volume only and several closed edge tears. Two volumes have faint tan stains to top page-edge not visible internally. All text in Russian. The set is edited by V. F. Ryndin. All drawings by V.I. Kozlinskii. Additional editing and text by Elena Kurbatova and Elizaveta Berman. This set covers Russian costume design for staged productions from 1750 to 1917. In other words from the beginning of Russian drama to the Russian Revolution. All volumes are illustrated with drawings similar to fashion drawings in French and German periodicals from the late 19th century. All volumes have some color drawings as well as black & white. All volumes also have some technical details to guide the costume designers making period costumes: some of the illustrations are like pattern designs for tailors. A spectacular resource. 12" high X 9" wide, 170 & 182 & 182 & 182 & 222 pages. The volumes were all published between 1960 and 1972. Volume 1: 1750-1830, volume 2: 1830-1850, volume 3: 1850-1870, volume 4: 1870-1890, volume 5: 1890-1917. Foreign buyers should expect extra postage. These books will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and sent with tracking.

Original monochrome illustrated wrappers lettered in white. Gentlest wear to extremities. Scarce both in the trade and in British research institutions: JiscLHD locates five copies only Bodleian UoDurham UoLeeds UoNewcastle & UoSussex. Very good A significant association copy of this early Richard Hamilton-designed catalogue for the Hatton Gallery's 1957 Gods and Men exhibition with a Pop Art flavour though not fully "young witty gimmicky glamorous and Big Business" as he later wrote from the collection of Holland and Hamilton's Durham University colleague fellow artist art lecturer and husband of Julia Strachey Lawrence Gowing and indeed commanding: "return to L.G." on its title page. Lawrence Gowing then Professor of Fine Art at King's College University of Durham now the University of Newcastle had recruited Richard Hamilton in 1952 to teach design; he later developed a 'basic course' for first-year students with Victor Pasmore remaining on the staff until 1966 and as this catalogue indicates helped with exhibitions at the Hatton Gallery designing and printing the posters and catalogues in house. The intellectual father of Pop Art or 'Pop Daddy' also exhibited his own work at the Hatton Gallery which two years earlier in 1955 hosted his important photographic installation Man Machine and Motion ahead of its move to the ICA. The Gods and Men exhibition featured Stephen Tomlin's head of Lytton Strachey lent by Julia Strachey "Mrs Lawrence Gowing" and previously Mrs Stephen Tomlin as well as three Epstein busts at the modern end plus C19th carvings from New Zealand New Ireland the Solomon Islands Luba and New Britain and Egyptian Egypto-Roman and Romano-British wood and stone heads. I personally believe it's the result of the choice of materials made by the publisher. I have listed this as simply "very good" due to the flaking; without this I would list it as "fine." Dust jacket is in fine condition with mylar cover. Hinges and binding are all tight and sound. Beautiful appearance on any bookshelf. A sound and attractive copy.
