1975réf. UB-17888Cincinnatti: Cal Kowal 1975. First Edition. Very Good. First Edition. Photographic essay documenting Joseph "Mr. Spoons" Jones the Cincinnati street and bar performer who spent over three decades playing spoons in the bars of Over-the-Rhine - including Aunt Maudie's - while supplementing his income selling handmade paper corsages. Kowal's black-and-white photographs capture Jones performing including a striking image of him posed at a pool table with spoons arranged to spell out "SPOONS." Text includes biographical and anecdotal matter under headings "Bar Hopping · Spoon Flopping · Street Troubadour" and "Livelihood" along with a Shakespeare epigraph from A Midsummer Night's Dream "Wilt thou heare some musicke.let us have the tongs and the bones" IV.i.33 printed against a black page with a white photogram-style fern/leaf motif echoed from the covers. Rear free endpaper carries contact information stamped in black "TO RENT MR. SPOONS / CONTACT LOU / AT: JIMMY SKINNERS MUSIC CENTER / ON VINE ST." with a phone number added by hand in blue ink. The same leaf bears a printed dedication to "Joe's amicable family" special thanks to Noel Martin and the Cincinnati Art Museum and the production credits above. Signed: Inscribed in ink by the subject Joseph Jones: "With luck from Mr Spoon Joseph Jones." Additionally inscribed below by Dick Robbins: "With the wish that you always get what you want and want what you get" signed with a small hand-drawn spoon beneath his signature. Robbins' identity/relationship to the subject or production has not been established through outside sources - he does not appear in the book's own credits or in available secondary accounts of Jones/Aunt Maudie's; the inscription itself is the only evidence of his connection to this copy. Bound in at rear is a sleeve containing a 45 rpm single. Vetco Records 5825 Vine Street Cincinnati Ohio 45202 ℗ 1975 catalog/matrix no. 741278. Labels credit "Jimmie Skinner Music. Pub." Side 1 / "Jimmie Skinner Music Pub." Side 2 and bear the artist name "MR. SPOONS." Side 1: "Spoon Rag" 2:04 / "Spinning Spoons" 1:50 Side 2: "Spoon Tapping" / "Dueling Spoons" - label scuffed/worn on this side obscuring the catalog number and partially obscuring both track titles; readings above are my best guess from what's legible and should be confirmed by ear or under raking light before going to print. Vinyl Condition: Vinyl/playing surface clean and bright on both sides with light handling marks only; appears playable. Side 2 label scuffed and abraded in an arc near the spindle hole affecting legibility of two track titles and the catalog number; Side 1 label clean and fully legible. Record is taped into a die-cut pocket at the rear of the book. Book Condition: mild wear and rubbing to extremities with chipping/bumping at the corners of the front panel; scattered brown foxing/spotting to the rear free endpaper and adjoining leaves. Spiral binding remains tight and intact. . Cal Kowal unknown books

1888réf. 221661888. Original patent documentation for Edmond Verstraete's innovative 1888 railway car design an uncommon surviving artifact from the era of rapid industrial expansion and technological advancement in American rail transport. Verstraete Edmond. Railway Car. Washington D.C.: U.S. Patent Office July 24 1888. Patent No. 386512. First edition. 2 printed lithograph sheets measuring 9" x 7". Signed by inventor and witnesses. Includes two detailed mechanical drawings by Verstraete with formal submission details signed by the inventor and his attorney. This patent filed during a period when the U.S. railroad network was transforming American commerce and mobility documents Verstraete's reconfiguration of the passenger car interior and structural layout. The diagrams show side and overhead views of a self-contained passenger railcar marked by articulated platform entries segmented internal seating and a defined vestibule region. Of note are the annotated elements marked "x" in red ink labeled as "Lower entries" and "Passengers" likely indicating areas of operational focus or examiner queries. The first sheet offers a longitudinal cross-section while the second presents a plan and elevation revealing design emphasis on safety comfort and structural balance. The late 19th century witnessed a proliferation of railway car patents as inventors sought to enhance efficiency passenger experience and operational safety in the context of growing urban transit systems and long-haul travel routes. Verstraete's work fits within this inventive surge paralleling the emergence of Pullman cars electric trolleys and elevated rail networks. As cities like New York Chicago and San Francisco expanded rail-based infrastructure designs such as this laid the groundwork for more integrated mass transit and intercity rail travel. Light toning minor smudge at lower margin of first sheet archival notations in red and pencil at margin; "EXAMINER" hand-stamped at top. Overall very good condition. A scarce and compelling primary document reflecting the ingenuity and regulatory mechanics of the Gilded Age railroad boom ideal for researchers in industrial history transportation technology and the evolution of public transit. unknown books

réf. 11222Santa Monica & Minneapolis: Danger! Books & Indulgence Press 2004. Deluxe/Limited Editions. Various. Fine. Deluxe/Limited Editions. Various. Moody's short story Surplus Value Books #13 is a comic parody of a bookseller's modern rare book catalogue. The story unfolds as the galley proofs of the involved book catalogue where the prices accorded the items for sale are contrasted with the personal and idiosyncratic values assigned to them by the bookseller. "This intricate collaboration is an expanded treatment of a text originally published by Rick Moody and David Ford as an artist's book in 1999. Taking the form of a bookseller's catalogue Moody's novella which is also reprinted in his 2000 collection Demonology lays bare the fragile psyche of its narrator whose fractured and overwrought book descriptions often veer into personal territory returning particularly to his obsession with a college classmate Anna Feldman. The deluxe edition includes corrected page proofs of the text complete with "hand corrections" by the author reproduced typographically by Wilbur "Chip" Schilling and sections that appear to have been manually "whited out." Each item in the portfolio supports the text of the story-from the straightjacket that holds the book and the narrator's "release papers" from a private mental hospital to the a collection of objects that relate directly to the entries including a Star Wars action figure Scrabble tiles and a baseball card. The text is aptly described by Hadley-based bookseller Ken Lopez: "Moody has created a hilarious and touching self-contained world where the values accorded to the items for sale dollars and the values inherent in them significance artistry passion are in running comic contrast." Exhibition statement Smith College The overall design and printing was undertaken by Wilbur "Chip" Schilling Daniel Kelm and David Ford Kelm with assistance from "other mechanics" at the Wide Awake Garage. In creating the OCD-adjacent box Kelm created a void filled with a blank because "any obsessive would want to have the regular edition too." He then noted laughing that would leave no place for the blank and wondered what would be done with that. While not called for a standard issue of the limited first edition one of 700 copies is included. Tight bright and unmarred. Folio resin coated cloth box mixed media including vinyl plastic cloth metal paper wood leather etc. fo 49x23x10cm. Numbered limited editions. Danger! Books & Indulgence Press unknown books
