No. 129 of 160 octavo size 206 pp. signed by Eric Gill. Clothing has long been an integral part of society and can be used to reflect diverse religious and cultural identities. In this essay Eric Gill 1882-1940 discusses the significance of clothes in society and argues for a more egalitarian approach to clothing; for example Gill advocates the suitability of men's clothing trousers for women as a way to liberate the sexes and create a more equal society. Gill provides wood engravings for the book illustrating his concepts and showcasing his masterful rendering of the technique; his illustrations have a slightly satirical slant while evoking the pathos of his arguments. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter brown pigskin with marbled paper boards gilt rules and lettering on the spine top edge gilt fore- and bottom edges uncut illustrations include title page device "Woman Dancing" P712; "Art and Prudence" P714; "Clothes as Houses" P715; "Clothes as Workshops" P716; "Clothes as Churches and Town Halls" P717; "Clothes for Special Parts" P718; "The Tyranny of Tailors" P719; "Nature and Nakedness" P720; "Trousers" P21; and a tailpiece of "Trousers and Spats" P722; octavo 7.5" by 5.25" pagination: i-vii 1-2 3-196 197-198 1 colophon one of 160 copies this number 129 signed "Eric G" on the colophon. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine with clean boards straight corners a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; some slight rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards and to the corners a faint stain to the gutter of Contents page and very slight cracking to the gutter at pages 128 and 129 but hinges are still tight. ___CITATION: Gill 22. ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. 1823réf. 002813London: John and Arthur Arch 1823. Hardcover. Very Good . Published for the Author by John and Arthur Arch . . . R. Triphook . . . and J. Major . . . ." 8 15 1 p. 53 leaves of plates 1 leaf with copper-engraved dedication to Lavinia Countess Spencer signed Hewitt 52 leaves of mounted plates numbered 1-60 drawn and engraved by G.R. Lewis; 29 cm. Contemporary half red morocco with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between gilt-rules and raised bands with gilt-tooled decoration. Black morocco spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Lewis's Etchings. Red morocco label on front board with double gilt-ruled border gilt corner rosettes and title "Etchings of the Physiognomy Manners & Character of the People of France & Germany." Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821. Included are directions for placing the plates in Dibdin's work. Lewis made hundreds of drawings while accompanying Thomas Frognall Dibdin on his tour of France and Germany some of which were used to illustrate Dibdin's book. A disagreement about how much Dibdin owed Lewis for the drawings developed after the tour and the additional plates presented here were undoubtedly published by Lewis to generate some extra income from his work. In Very Good Condition: leather and boards are rubbed most heavily at head of spine and corners; corner of title page lightly soiled; light foxing primarily affecting the leaves on which the plates are mounted rather than the plates themselves; plates are clean and crisp. 2018réf. ABE-1675259210036Strange Attractor Press London 2018 This is a truly odd listing. It is easy to understand at one level. It has a powerful impact. It will set you thinking. It is also a truly original take on an historical theme. Ian Johnstone worked on this odd and fascinating collection. It is VERY odd; it is possibly unique. The wounds all twenty three of them were inspired by this artist's conception of how each stab was wielded and delivered upon Julius Caesar. An attempt to describe it sounds pretentious but with this strange book in your hands you can look and share something of this odd vision. Each was produced on - I believe - white melamine. The wounds are rendered in red pigment or ink. One of them is featured on the shiny white cover. It is an image inset into a blind stamped shape. The images inside are all in keeping with the cover and one can speculate; is this Brutus's mark And can that be yon Cassius's lean and hungry blade Was this how each wound appeared upon the toga of JC Speculate as you wish and contemplate them in whatever order you like. They are all worth a look and you will have seen nothing so strange before. And there are some photographs of the artist at the back by Kerry and Daniel O'Sullivan. Geoff Cox and Serena Korda have written the text. This is hard to describe and easy to look at. It is wondrous strange. It is peculiar. On the back cover it says '23 hawk beaks 23 fragments of a skull 23 curses hung round the neck of a scavenger.' And there are only 300 copies in the whole wide world of this book and it might be a masterpiece. It is not signed or numbered but the publisher insists only 300 copies exist. There is also a cassette of special music. YES! A cassette. The loose prints are ready to frame and the whole package is something very special indeed. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. 1826réf. ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. hardcover
