Paraphrase in Homeric language and verse and its translation in Latin prose on opposite pages with a prefatory treatise on the ancient versions of the Old Testament. Translated by Jacob Duport. "Immediately after the Restoration he was made one of the king's chaplains and reinstated in the possession of his prebend at Lincoln but not of the archdeaconry of Stow as he preferred holding his fellowship and vice-mastership in Trinity College. Widdrington was now dispossessed of the Greek professorship and Duport restored to it but he resigned the chair the same year in favour of his pupil Isaac Barrow. On 19 July 1660 he was by royal mandate with many other learned divines created D.D. at Cambridge Kennett p. 251. He was installed dean of Peterborough 27 July 1664. In 1668 on the death of Dr. John Howorth master of Magdalene College Duport was recalled to Cambridge and appointed by James earl of Suffolk possessor of Audley End to fill the vacant headship. In the following year Duport was elected vice-chancellor of the university. Bishop Monk says that Duport 'appears to have been the main instrument by which literature was upheld in this university Cambridge during the civil dissensions in the seventeenth century and though seldom named and little known at present he enjoyed an almost transcendent reputation for a great length of time among his contemporaries as well as in the generation which immediately succeeded" DNB. Two volumes. 4to. iv ii ii 722; 723-1352 xviii xiii 1 pp. This copy is bound in two volumes whereas another copy may also be bound in one volume & much heavier to handle. Original full calf gilt spine compartments all edges gilt marbled endleaves; worn upper joints reinforced with a proper leather joint some general wear as per corners. Very good. With a correct and handsome view of Michaelangelo’s The Creation of Adam and on the second volume in equally large detail and space available to a quarto volume is painted da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Both paintings have the title written on the fore-edge itself. / Possibly painted by Margaret Selmes without confirmation. / Commissioned by evidence from elsewhere! that this fore-edge was done by or for Harrington’s without their cost-codes probably in the mid-to-late 1990s. The evidence is really every other book in this same collection the pattern of which is well established. That means the attribution to place of origin and date is assured despite the fact that there ae no markings. Samuel Bagster, 1827. hardcover books

1828réf. 148141828. BIBLE. NEW TESTAMENT. GERMAN. Das Neue Testament unsers Herrn und Heilandes Jesu Christi. Princeton: D. A. Borrenstein 1828. 272 1 p. Contemporary sheep very skillfully rebacked in period style. A very nice copy. The first book in German type printed in New Jersey. Although the actual presswork was probably done in Princeton by David Borrenstein who we know owned the type the book was printed from stereotype plates made in Philadelphia by Jedidiah Howe. There is no other evidence of German type in use in New Jersey until the establishment of German newspapers in the early 1850s. It is interesting to speculate on Borrenstein's reasoning in printing a German-language book in New Jersey which in 1828 had relatively few German-speaking residents. The book is very rare. A common theme for these Bibles: respectable married man tells a young woman he wants to "buy a little of your kiester if we could get it over before my wife comes back from the store." The activities progress in graphic detail. Tijuana Bibles "were produced by a shadowy criminal underground in the 1930s. Very little hard information is available about how the Bibles were created where they were manufactured and how they were distributed. One certain fact confirmed by numerous anecdotes is that these comic books were for many young men their first peek into the forbidden world of erotic intimacy" Adelman. They were crudely printed and illustrated porn tract-comic books. The skimpy stories featured contemporary movie sports folk political and cartoon characters in absurdly hyperbolic sexual relations. Why they're called Tijuana Bibles is a matter of speculation; 'Tijuana' was typically associated with iniquity and as an outlet for behavior considered impermissible elsewhere. Properly considered the ancestor of America's underground comics Tijuana Bibles declined in popularity in the 1960's as mainstream publications like Playboy would satisfy readers' prurient interests. Extensively annotated in ink holograph 3 1/2 pages on blank endleaves being the record of Thomas de Grey's family births marriages and deaths; he is the second son of Lord Walsingham "a clergyman married Elizabeth Fourth Daughter of the Hon.ble. Brownlow North Bishop of Winchester on the 12th of August 1802 by Special Licence at the Private Chapel at Winchester House Chelsea. . ." Very good. WITH A DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING of Philadelphia in 1790 and New York in 1820. The scene of Philadelphia shows churches buildings a harbor and shipping scene; on the reverse edge showing "New York" has various harbor buildings. Not signed; likely painted just prior to Leamington's owning this volume thus ca. 1953. The artist is not known. Often an American bookstore would import a volume acquired from an artist or a British bookstore. / Written in pencil "Dr. Carl J. Weber says no American scenes on double fore-edge paintings . . . Bot bought of Leamington Book Shop July '53. says this is the 3rd he has brought over." While a lot of time has passed one should never say "never" with regard to topics painted. The fact is that more and more paintings were painted and as that occurred the market was in America so scenes of American city views most being not so recognizable maybe became painted more and more as well. It largely depended on when the artists were painting and where they derived their commissions. Some artists were working independently of a bookstore or a binder and those painters also had their own patterns of what they painted frequently. Samuel Stevens not the artist here! was exactly that type of artist. / PROVENANCE: W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. 1813réf. 18016Somerset PA: Friedrich Goeb 1813. First Edition. Original blind ruled calf over oak boards. Good; joints & hinges cracked; front oak board has a vertical split; front cover nearly loose; some peripheral marginal water stains; straps missing. Large 4to 4 527 66 2 169 3 pp. Accompanied by three 18th century printed hymns and a large inserted color Fraktur bookplate signed by the scribe. A unique copy of this bible from the Yaukey Yocky family. The Goeb printing of Luther's bible in Somerset is historic in itself; especially so given the generous format Goeb chose for his work. What makes this copy unique is the laid-in copies of three printed hymns; two from "Sisters" of the Ephrata Cloister but all originating at Snow Hill. Catherine Redelsberger and Barbara Schneeberger for whose family farm the Snow Hill sanctuary was named were among the earliest American women converts to Beissel's Seventh-Day Baptists. Andreas Schneeberger is represented here by a hymn printed at the Cloister on laid paper clearly watermarked CB in a "fluttering heart" Gravell #198. It is most likely that the Redelsberger hymn was also printed at the Cloister but there is no watermark. The three broadside printings are: 1 Der Schw. Catharina Redelsberger Glaubens-Lied. Unlocated. 2 Geistliches Trauer-Lied gestellt von Schw. Barbara Schneeberger. Unlocated 3 Wurde abgesungen den 31ten August 1793: Bey B. A. S. auf dem jährlichen Fest an der Antitum. Printed at the Cloister. Attributed to Andreas Schneeberger. Shipton & Mooney #26144 with the entry taken from Seidensticker and no location provided. There apparently is one copy at HSP. These ephemeral publications were sold through western Pennsylvania by itinerant peddlers or after meetings see Yoder pp. 42 - 44 barely noting any from the 18th century. Few survive. The three offered here must have been acquired by the Yaukey family 20 years before the Goeb bible was printed and retained for generations within the family. They are spotted and toned and irregularly trimmed. The Fraktur bookplate in the bible is large 285 x 230 mm. It is a geometric lettered design in four colors green yellow red brown that is signed and dated: Samuel Jackson Sept. 14 1827. In all an outstanding survival. S & S #27883; Gravell #198. Second Gryphius edition and a rather uncommon early sixteenth-century printing of Erasmus' Latin translation of the New Testament first published at Basel in 1516. According to Baudrier Ly. V. 804101/Cat. de Lignerolles Paris Porquet 1894 no. 48 Gryphius first published this translation in 1542 and 1543 as a 16mo of 847 pages; neither of these issues appear in Deleveau & Hillard. Like the present edition these early Gryphius printings of the Erasmus New Testament survive in only a handful of copies. The text opens with Erasmus' dedication to pope Leo X followed by his preface to the reader a general index of the New Testament corpus a listing of the chapters of the four Gospels and a brief passage from Jerome's catalogue of ecclesiastical writings. The editor's introductions precede each book. The text concludes with Erasmus' translation of a brief discussion of apocryphal literature partly from Athanasius though Erasmus questions the attribution: "De libris utriusque testamenti partim reiectus aut non sine contradictione admissis partim apocryphis ex Athanasio tametsi mihi suspectus est titulus." Provenance and annotations: Extensive early annotations in more than one hand appear throughout the book; many marginal notes have been added throughout the Gospel of Matthew. At the front of the book beginning with the free endleaf: "Poeta de Pythogora" several stanzas in Latin and Greek; facing the title: A morning prayer "Oro matutina lecturis oracula divina" 11 lines; an accounting of biblical eras 10 lines since Abraham David and the Babylonian Exile appears at the verso of the title leaf. The final blank page the two intergral blank leaves and two additional blanks added by the binder are filled with notes in several different hands including: a passage from Augustine's De doctrina christianae 14 lines; noted as book 2 chapters 11 and 12 along with four lines about Tertullian; four pages of notes on the twelve disciples numbered; a Greek text discussing the divine names in which the tetragrammaton is written in Hebrew letters; a passage from a letter of Basilius Magnus in Greek with Latin translation. Printed label of Edward Davis Hoblyn 1809-1881 and his manuscript entry dated 1831 at the free endleaf. Edward was likely related to the renowned book collector Robert Hoblyn 1710-1756 of Cornwall. A catalogue of Robert's collection was printed in 1768 as Bibliotheca Hobliniana and reissued by Murray in 1769 with a new titlepage. The library remained with Robert's widow and was sold in 1778. The present work is not listed in the Bibliotheca though no fewer than nineteen 16th-century Latin Bibles and Testaments appear in the catalogue. Gift inscription of D. N.
