Clay & Sons at the University Press ca. 1890. 203 x 133 mm. 8 x 5 3/8". 998 pp. MOST ATTRACTIVE HAZEL BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO GILT BY STOAKLEY LATE HAWES stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper covers framed by gilt rules and guilloche tooling central panel with delicately tooled cornerpieces featuring grapevines on a stippled background raised bands spine compartments densely gilt with grapevine motif turn-ins with richly gilt frame leather hinges all edges gilt gutter at front flyleaf expertly reinforced with tissue. With presentation inscription on front flyleaf: "Herbert Gardner Travers / from his Godmother / A. S. Burn / August 1891"; below this the ink-inscribed record of the recipient's marriage and the births of his children. Spine gently and uniformly sunned a shade lighter two hardly noticeable small abrasions to rear cover offsetting from turn-ins to free endpapers as almost always but still a fine copy in a remarkably handsome binding with few signs of use. The appealing binding on this treasured family Bible was created in Cambridge by Vere Stoakley who took over the workshop of J. Hawes on that craftsman's death in the late 1880s; he signed his work "Stoakley Late Hawes" to acknowledge this connection. The firm specialized in academic bindings to supply scholars from the university and continued in business until the 1920s. The present binding clearly is much more elaborate and beautiful than a simple scholar's binding and this is because it was a special gift presented to a beloved godson probably for his christening. Recipient Herbert Gardner Travers 1891-1958 grew up to be a decorated World War I flying ace who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his five aerial victories. After the Great War he worked in the airplane industry as a test pilot and flying instructor then became a commercial pilot in 1935. He returned to the Royal Air Force at the outset of World War II and was an acting squadron leader. As recorded on the flyleaf of his Bible he married Hermia Edith Margaretta Fraser in August 1919 and over the next 12 years they welcomed children Daphne 1920 Eva 1921 Elizabeth 1924 Christina 1926 and Edward 1931. Attractive late 19th or early 20th century retrospective polished brown calf by L. Guétant stamp-signed in gilt on tail of spine double gilt-ruled border floral cornerpieces raised bands spine panels with scrolling floral borders and central flower ornament gilt titling. With title vignette and 62 ENGRAVED FOLDING PLATES ALL WITH BEAUTIFUL HAND COLORING AND HIGHLIGHTED WITH GOLD depicting Bible scenes from the Old and New Testament 61 of which are by Jan Luyken. A Large Paper Copy. For earlier editions: Graesse IV p. 308; Brunet III 1245-46; Klaversma & Hannema 159-164. Light rubbing to joints and edges boards just a little marked trivial foxing and faint spots here and there but A REMARKABLY FINE COPY the binding lustrous and showing little wear the paper extremely bright and fresh the margins immense and the paint and gold unusually vibrant. The marvelous illustrations of Dutch engraver and poet Jan Luyken comprise this collection of "remarkable stories" from the Bible each depicted with panoramic grandeur and enhanced with a wide range of finely applied colors and gold. Luyken 1649-1712 had written and illustrated erotic poetry as a young man but later became a devout Pietist after reading the works of German mystic Jakob Böhme. He became a member of the Baptist Church in 1673 and thereafter devoted his talents to producing religious works. The vast scenes here are notable in their scale detail and animation. There are a number of battle scenes from the Old Testament as well as dramatic depictions of the plagues and a fascinating episode from the histories of Josephus depicting Herod's soldiers being lowered down the side of a cliff in large boxes suspended from chains in order to attack the thieves hiding in caverns on the cliffside. There is a majestic portrayal of the Queen of Sheba arriving at the court of Solomon a peaceful scene of Adam naming the beasts in the Garden of Eden and a festive celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. New Testament scenes include a terrifying final judgment a blinding conversion of St. Paul and scenes from that Apostle's travels. The engravings have one common trait: they are heavily populated whether by men or beasts and one of Luyken's special gifts is to render every person in the crowd as an individual with his own concerns and reactions to the events at hand. The engravings while already greatly pleasing in black and white are even more stirring and memorable when seen in the full color and gold used here. Expansive tableaus are given greater definition and clarity and events such as Noah’s flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah are rendered even more successful in expressing the awesome powers of the Almighty. The illustrations are quite definitely Protestant in point of view: there are no depictions of the Virgin Mary not even a Nativity scene. Except for engravings of the Annunciation to the Shepherds and the Massacre of the Holy Innocents the illustrations focus on Jesus as an adult and on the work of his Apostles spreading the gospel. There were earlier editions containing Luyken's 62 large plates which originally appeared without text as here in 1708 and they appeared again with a text in Dutch in 1729 and in French in 1732. Copies of these editions appear with some regularity in the marketplace but are usually not colored and are often found incomplete or with other major condition issues. We can trace no record in RBH or OCLC of a copy of our 1790 edition and we can find nothing that compares with the quality of coloring and grand height attained by the monumental margins seen here. rif. ST15769aPerhaps France mid-12th century. Each leaf measures approximately 370 x 240 mm. 14 1/2 x 9 1/2". Double column 32 lines in a fine proto-gothic hand. See: Thompson "An Introduction to Greek and Latin Paleography" p. 436. ◆Recovered from a binding and thus with one side of each leaf somewhat browned soiled and with a few creases one leaf with several small blotches of red paint in the text not affecting overall legibility one corner of each leaf torn away affecting running title and one to two lines of text other trivial defects but still very nice specimens with clear and legible script and one side of each leaf quite clean and well preserved. Once part of a large and elegant Romanesque Bible these leaves are excellent examples of a high quality proto-gothic book hand. Sometimes referred to as "praegothica" or "late Caroline" the proto-gothic script is characterized by letterforms that are more or less unchanged from Caroline minuscule but with a number of traits starting to show elements of gothic script--most notably the addition of feet appearing here as an upward flick of the pen on the bottom of minims but also including the use of more abbreviations the fusion of certain letter combinations a more elongated "o" and a straight-backed "a." Whatever the level of its evolution the script here has very pleasing rounded letterforms that are highly legible and generously spaced. Though the vellum is not unmarred by its former life as binding material the script here has not lost any of its beauty revealing a hand that is practiced regular and distinctly pleasing to the eye. As Thompson notes "In the twelfth century the scribes seem to have vied with each other in producing the best types of book-writing of which they were capable with the result that remarkable precision in the formation of the letter was attained and that the century may be named as excelling all others for the beauty of its MSS." Our leaves come from Deuteronomy the Old Testament book consisting primarily of three sermons made by Moses just before entering the Promised Land. One leaf contains brief summaries of chapters 2-18 with some chapters numbered in the margins while the other leaf contains part of the first of Moses' speeches in which he recalls the Israelites' 40-year journey through the wilderness. unknown books
