Cats was a Dutch statesman and writer of emblem books a type of popular seventeenth-century literature consisting of woodcuts or engravings accompanied by didactic verses pointing a moral or presenting an ethical concern often related to love and marriage. Dutch artists of the Golden Age including Vermeer used such books as inspiration for motifs in their paintings and prints. The sources upon which Cats draws for this combination of emblem literature and love poetry are chiefly the Bible and the classics and occasionally Boccaccio and Cervantes. His first book Sinne-en minnebeelden "Portraits of Morality and Love" contained 96 emblematic engravings with text in Dutch Latin and French each emblem with a threefold interpretation expressing what were for Cats the three elements of human life: love society and religion. Perhaps his most famous emblem book written in a more homely style than his earlier works is Spiegel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt "Mirror of Old and New Times" with 128 emblematical engravings accompanied by quotations many of which have become household sayings. Two other worksHouwelyk 'Marriage' and Trou-ringh 'Wedding Ring' with 59 platesare rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity. Finally in one of his last books Ouderdom buyten-leven en hof-gedachten "Old Age Country Life and Garden Thoughts" with 27 plates Cats writes movingly about his declining years. Internally very nice and clean. XV 1 304 pp. Wih numerous illustrations most of them photographic. First edition of this landmark work on the miserable living conditions of the poor immigrants in New York constituting one of the very earliest - and certainly the most popular and influential - attempts at making "the other half" i.e. the middle and upper classes aware of how the poor in New York actually lived. Riis's work created attention to the neglected and overseen community that was the underprivileged in New York. In the long run the great success of the work created attention to the status living conditions and general health of the poor and it initiated social reform movements in all major North American cities. Furthermore the work is regarded the very first example of "muckraking" journalism and was the first to extensively use halftone photographic reproductions in a book.Riis used a convincing combination of facts from Dr. Roger S. Tracy Registrar of Vital Statistics and his own talents as a photo journalist to make a hitherto unseen powerful description of the correlation between the high crime rate drunkenness and reckless behavior of the poor and their lack of proper homes. The statistical facts made it a relevant and sober work and lent it enough authority to the book's claims for it to be taken serious by city official. His groundbreaking photographs confirmed the dry numbers and "spoke directly to people's hearts". Pascal "Jacob Riis: Reporter and Reformer" p. 87. Unlike all previously works on the living conditions of the poor "How the Other Half Lives" offered concrete solutions on how to improve living condition how to make the tenants improve their buildings and finally how the politicians and city officials could make the appropriate and necessary juridical changes. The effect of the work was immediately seen and included: the tearing down of New York's worst tenements sweatshops and the reformation of the city's schools. The book led to a decade of improvements in Lower East Side conditions with garbage collection sewers and indoor plumbing all following soon after. Because of the present work Riis quickly rose to fame and in 1895 he became close friends with Theodore Roosevelt then a New York City official who wrote of Riis: "Jacob Riis whom I am tempted to call the best American I ever knew although he was already a young man when he came hither from Denmark". After Roosevelt became President he wrote a tribute to Riis that started: "Recently a man well qualified to pass judgment alluded to Mr. Jacob A. Riis as "the most useful citizen of New York". Those fellow citizens of Mr. Riis who best know his work will be most apt to agree with this statement. The countless evils which lurk in the dark corners of our civic institutions which stalk abroad in the slums and have their permanent abode in the crowded tenement houses have met in Mr. Riis the most formidable opponent ever encountered by them in New York City."The title refers to the French writer François Rabelais who famously wrote in Pantagruel: "one half of the world does not know how the other half lives". As a work of journalism and of social criticism Riis's book still stands as a truly seminal testimony to how the lower classes lived at the turn of the century. Due to this work attention was eventually paid to them and their conditions bettered. hardcover

The result of six years of research by the Jacob Lawrence Catalogue Raisonné Project led by Peter T. Nesbett and Michelle DuBois the books identify authenticate and document over 900 paintings drawings and murals created by Jacob Lawrence between 1935 and 1999—over half of them discovered by the project. Over the Line includes essays by eight distinguished art historians considering the ways in which Lawrence’s art speaks so powerfully to different audiences and examining for the first time the breadth and depth of his output. Intimate in scale and bold in content Lawrence’s candid portrayals of life in Harlem during the Depression and his epic multi-panel series painted in the late 1930s and early 1940s are the cornerstones of his aesthetic production. His paintings drawings and murals depict both critical moments in history and poignant struggles of everyday life. The subject matter ranges from unforgiving portrayals of racial injustice to compassionate scenes of family life from unnerving images of nuclear annihilation to visual celebrations of such heroic individuals as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. His use of the series format and his attention to pressing social issues accord him a unique position in the history of American modernism. Born in 1917 Jacob Lawrence spent his childhood in New York City attending classes at the Harlem Community Art Center and the American Artists School and later working for the Federal Art Project. While still in his twenties Lawrence exhibited his paintings at major museums across the country including the Phillips Collection the Metropolitan Museum of Art the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York where he became the first African American artist to have work represented in the permanent collection. He lived painted and taught in New York City until 1971 when he joined the faculty of the University of Washington. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the National Medal of Arts. The contributors to Over the Line include Lizzetta LaFalle Collins; Patricia Hills Boston University; Elizabeth Hutton-Turner the Phillips Collection; Paul Karlstrom West Coast Archives of American Art; Leslie King-Hammond Maryland Institute; Richard Powell Duke University; Lowery Stokes Sims Studio Museum in Harlem; and Elizabeth Steele the Phillips Collection. . 2000. 0295979631 . Contemporary 19th-century modest half-grained cloth binding spine faded marbled paper boards with surface abrasions yellow endpapers and pastedowns marbled edges. Sole edition uncommon of this vindication by Jacob Spon 1647-1685 concerning his major travel account of the Levant Voyage d'Italie de Dalmatie de Grèce et du Levant fait aux années 1675 & 1676 published in 1678. Georges Guillet de Saint-Georges 1624 or 1625-1705 had a little earlier 1675 produced a description of the contemporary state of the city and monuments of Athens which Spon disputed in his own narrative even going so far as to question whether Guillet had ever travelled in Greece at all. Hence a quarrel of the kind scholars delight in: sharp and somewhat futile. Bookplate of a Greek educational institution affixed to a pastedown. Thomas Amaury hardcover
