About the author: "David Paul Drach aka Paul-Louis-Bernard Drach after his conversion 1791-1865 was a Catholic convert from Judaism and librarian of the College of Propaganda in Rome. Drach received his early education from his father who was a rabbi. After spending some time in various Talmudic schools he became a teacher at Rappoltsweiler though only sixteen years of age. The love of the secular sciences brought him to Paris where he was welcomed by his coreligionists and became tutor in a wealthy Jewish family. His reputation as a teacher brought him Christian pupils; and this may have had some influence on his subsequent conversion; in fact he had always manifested some leaning toward Christianity. Drach had already begun the study of Greek and Latin so as to become acquainted with the Christian doctrines in their original sources. Struck by the accusation of some of the Fathers that the Jews had corrupted the Hebrew text he began a comparative study of the Hebrew and the Septuagint which study he continued in spite of the remonstrances of the president of the Central Consistory. Drach was received into the Catholic faith in 1823 together with his two daughters and his son Paul who afterward became a priest and a distinguished Biblical scholar. In 1827 Drach accepted the position of librarian of the Propaganda in Rome which position he held until the year of his death." From the Jewish Encyclopedia. Fortunato Stella e Figli hardcover

réf. 3476Signed `J Van Huysum' lower right. Pencil and watercolour crowned shield with fleur-de-lys watermark. A fine image of two stems the longer topped by a mass of small white flowers the second much shorter showing the black berries. Jacob van Huysum was born in Amsterdam in about 1687 a member of a renowned family of professional flower painters who enjoyed considerable success in Holland. His father was Justus van Huysum 1659-1716 and his brother Jan van Huysum 1682-1749. Jacob painted in much the same manner as his brother and as with his brother's work many of his drawings betray the temperament of an artist rather than that of a botanical illustrator. His 'work especially in England has often been mistaken for his brother's. Van Huysum came to England about 1721 in which year he was living in the house of a patron Mr. Lockyear of the South Sea House. Subsequently he was patronised by Sir Robert Walpole who received him as an intimate of his house at Chelsea and employed him to paint flowerpieces. for the decoration of the great house at Houghton in Norfolk' DNB . He also provided the majority of the drawings for the 50 illustrations to John Martyn's Historia Plantarum Rariorum London: 1728-38 as well all the drawings to another work Catalogus Plantarum. A catalogue of trees shrubs plants and flowers London: 1730. The present drawing shows the painterly approach where the artist whilst not sacrificing botanical accuracy tries to capture the essence of his subject. His work offers a contrast to the more strictly scientific approach of Georg Dionysius Ehret his younger contemporary and sometime colleague. Cf. Henrey II p.213. unknown

Cf. Henrey II p.213. unknown books

1692réf. 3306804Lyon: Vander Aa 1692. One part moderately water-stained another with slight marginal worming three of the folding plates repaired. Eleven volumes duodecimo the first with four engraved folding plates and all eleven volumes embellished with charming ornamental title-pages; a handsome set in mid eighteenth-century dark panelled calf with original labels. Attractively bound set of Cicero in eleven volumes noted as "respectable and correct" by Moss. The title-page boasts that the accuracy of the text arises from the editorial finesse of Dutch classical scholar Jacob Gronovius whose portrait appears as frontispiece to the first volume curiously the English literary lion Thomas Dibdin claimed the editorial attribution to Gronovius was spurious. Jacob was the father of botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius correspondent and patron of Carl Linnaeus and the author of a treatise on the native plants and herbs of Virginia. A charming set in an appealing early binding this is a considerable publication continuously paginated for a total of 3611 pages. The folding engraved plates include the detail of an epigraphic tribute to Cicero and numismatic relics relating to the famed Roman orator. . Vander Aa unknown
