1692réf. 3306804Lyon: Vander Aa 1692. One part moderately water-stained another with slight marginal worming three of the folding plates repaired. Eleven volumes duodecimo the first with four engraved folding plates and all eleven volumes embellished with charming ornamental title-pages; a handsome set in mid eighteenth-century dark panelled calf with original labels. Attractively bound set of Cicero in eleven volumes noted as "respectable and correct" by Moss. The title-page boasts that the accuracy of the text arises from the editorial finesse of Dutch classical scholar Jacob Gronovius whose portrait appears as frontispiece to the first volume curiously the English literary lion Thomas Dibdin claimed the editorial attribution to Gronovius was spurious. Jacob was the father of botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius correspondent and patron of Carl Linnaeus and the author of a treatise on the native plants and herbs of Virginia. A charming set in an appealing early binding this is a considerable publication continuously paginated for a total of 3611 pages. The folding engraved plates include the detail of an epigraphic tribute to Cicero and numismatic relics relating to the famed Roman orator. . Vander Aa unknown

60783Trompe l'oeil of a wall on which a print and some paper are hanging. The print is a portrait of Gerardus Kulenkamp 1700-1789 born in Bremen preacher in Nieuw-Loosdrecht Delft and Amsterdam. The painter copied with some modification a portrait drawn by Jan Maurits Quinkhard 1688-1772 and engraved by Jacob Houbraken 1698-1780. In fact the original portrait shows the preacher in half-length with both arms visible whereas in the drawing Kulenkamp is portrayed in an oval frame. An inscriptions runs on the top half of this very frame: 'GERARDUS KULENKAMP Bremensi Aetat XXXIX. V.D.M. Amstelodamensis'. The print is attached to the wooden board with two sealing waxes. The painted print shows some damage along the margins and in order to enhance the live effect Hoffham has marked in light grey also the plate mark especially on the left margin. The portrait is signed on the bottom right: 'H: Hoffham Junior. Fecit 1750.'. Hoffham as already mentioned was inspired by the print by Houbraken. From the same print comes in fact the text reported on the piece of paper on the right only partially visible. The text was composed by Cornelius de Cuyper 1707-1786 as reported on the bottom line. Not known is the source of the text on the left for the most part concealed by the piece of paper in the middle. On this one reads: 'OP DE AFBEELDINGE / Van den Eerwaarde en Geleerde Heer / GERARDUS KULENKAMP. 1775réf. 032819London: T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter 1775 A very good 3 volume set with 29 plates some text engravings and 3 maps as called for in contemporary full calf bindings. Jacob Bryant 1715-1804 is chiefly known for this work which attempts to link the mythologies of the world to stories and events in the book of Genesis. It was seen as an important publication and is credited with influencing the work of William Blake. Blake was apprenticed to the engraver James Basire whose name appears at the bottom of most of the plates and is believed to have worked on them. The bindings are in very good clean condition and have been rebacked at some point retaining the original spines with gilt decorative compartments and red title labels. The boards are in very good condition with some corner wear. The marbled endpapers look to be contemporary with repair at the joints. There is the armorial bookplate of William Orme Foster 1814-1899 to the front pastedowns. He was an iron and coal-master owning the firm of John Bradley and Co and was MP for South Staffordshire 1857-68. All 3 volumes have page markers and all page edges have been yellowed. Volumes I & II are 2nd edition; Vol III is a 1st. Vol I: half title; title; preface pp v-xvii; blank; plate list p xix; text 1-516 with 10 'plates' of which the final is un-numbered and inserted at the end of the text. Vol II: half title; title; plate list pp iii-vi; text pp 1-535 with 19 plates one by Cipriani and one by Chambars - the final plate un-numbered and at the end of the text. Vol III: half title; title 1776; preface pp v-viii; text pp 1-601 with 3 maps 2 of which are folding and one of which is credited to Basire. There is a final engraving before the Finis. Contents are in very good condition. The occasional page is toned and there is very occasional spotting mostly on the final blanks. There is offsetting from the plates only one of which is tissue-guarded. The offsetting affects pages before and after the plate. There are a couple of ink amendments to mistypes in Vol III. The rear bottom corner of Vol II is quite fragile as are the front corners of Vol III. T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter hardcover

Jacob Böhme's Aurora with Possible Jacobi Provenance Jacob Böhme Morgenröte im Aufgang das ist: die Wurzel oder Mutter der Philosophiae Astrologiae und Theologiae. Neue Auflage. 1780 Publisher: Berlin and Leipzig: Christian Ulrich Ringmacher 1780 12mo 5.75 x 3.75 inches 1 XXVI 2 360 pp. 4 German Condition: Very Good An important Berlin and Leipzig printing of Jacob Böhme's Aurora Morgenröte im Aufgang the first and most influential of his writings. Originally composed in 1612 this mystical text brought charges of heresy against Böhme but went on to shape the course of German theosophy Pietism and esoteric philosophy. The Aurora sets out his vision of creation and divine order blending philosophy astrology and theology into a spiritual cosmology that would influence generations of thinkers. The engraved frontispiece "Aurora" and accompanying emblematic plate continue the tradition of the Gichtel engravings first introduced in the Amsterdam editions of the 1680s by Böhme's follower Johann Georg Gichtel. These images became the definitive visual expression of Böhme's cosmology and were reproduced in later editions such as this. Bound in black pastepaper with veined pattern pastedown with a manuscript spine title. It is in Very Good condition with light foxing in places a small stain at pp. 121/128 scattered toning and an ownership inscription on the endpaper dated 1857. The inscription "J. L. Jacobi Gotha 1857" likely refers to Justus Ludwig Jacobi 1815-1888 Protestant church historian and professor at Halle who wrote on early Christianity and heterodox theology. His field of study and the place and date of the inscription align closely with ownership of Böhme's Aurora making this a probable provenance. Berlin and Leipzig: Christian Ulrich Ringmacher unknown
